John MacArthur: Meeting There at Last: The Perseverance of the Saints

  • The biblical doctrine of salvation has past, present, and future aspects to it. In anticipation of heaven, the Bible teaches that every true believer will persevere from this world to the next. As Jonathan Edwards wrote to his daughter Esther on the death of her husband, "Let us all take care that we may meet there at last." This session will consider the comfort and hope of heaven that encourages the saints to persevere in faith to the end of their lives.

I have failed so much since I was saved. I hate my sin, I hate my failure to obey, I hate my sinful nature and it disturbs me so much that I can still backslide ( a nice word for sinning) and we have to live with this burden until we die. Before I was saved I didn’t care now it’s a daily battle with the flesh.Thank you so very much my Lord and Saviour Jesus. I couldn’t live without you.

Keep fighting the good fight of the faith sister!
Dont try to do it in your own strength. Keep asking God for His power. Its all by His Holy Spirit. If you havent already, GO ALL IN. Thats where the power and joy of the Lord are found. We need to have a clear conscience to Love the Lord and neighbor as ourself.
God bless u and keeo u

My wife and I lost our first three children due to insufficient lung development. The second three made it. Some years after our last child was born to us, I entered an eleven-year period of wondering, contemplating, ruminating . . . over whether God was just mostly good, to most people, most of the time; OR, was God always good, to all people, all the time. I was blessed, eleven years after beginning this process, with an unexpected gift of conviction that there is no malevolence within the Almighty. As John states here, genuine faith becomes stronger after trials. It is true. Soli Deo Gloria.

      Please consider this:
A man is waiting at a crosswalk of a very busy intersection. He hears the panicking cries of a terrified mother behind him. Turning around he sees a toddler running in his direction, giving every sign the child will run past him and bolt into traffic. The man could effortlessly extend his hand and stop the toddler, saving the child's life. He could also prevent the untold heartaches of a mom watching her child die horribly, a motorist's trauma who accidently kills a person, and the grief of every witness, relative and friend.
Instead the man mumbles to himself "that kid has free will" and does nothing. Brakes screech, vehicles collide, lives are ruined, and one is lost.
      _Is that man evil?_
_How is a god who could have just as easily stopped it (and all other catastrophes) also not evil?_
Or do you hold your God to a lower standard than even that single lowly human?
Either your god cannot stop catastrophes, or doesn't care to, or doesn't exist.
That means either your god is powerless, or evil, or imaginary.
Take your pick and choose wisely.

I contracted a rare auto-immune disease (1/100,000 odds) 6 yrs ago that would have killed me, but I was spared 2 weeks prior to my son’s birth. This during the same year after having lost 2 brother-in-laws, both younger than 40 to unexpected deaths.
In the moment it seemed my end was imminent; the physical pain in the ER felt like 3rd-degree burns under my skin over every possible pore. When he said “burn away the dross” I remember laying in a tomb of inescapable fire while it burned every single physical nerve. The doctor said “Woa, never seen that.” Never have I felt so helpless and alone; yet I expected death and to meet the Lord face-to-face. But I was spared and I remain because He appoints my beginning and end.
We named our son Clayton, as a reminder (from Jer.17) that we are in the Potter’s hands. He can tear down and rebuild, but in Him is life, either here or eternal. This sermon touches deeply and personally, not just theologically. The worst week of my life matured me like nothing else.

Jesus is Lord God Almighty clothed in unsinful humanity and He is the author of eternal life to all who trust Him alone for salvation.
This means that saving repentance is realizing that you are a sinner deserving of God's just punishment in Hell and turn (repent) from whatever you trusted in before, if indeed you trusted in anything; to trusting in the person and finished work of Christ alone for salvation.

Somehow, I need an answer and I turn to you in faith that you will answer, be it by sermon or one of the short messages you have been putting out. What happens if you decide to be cremated instead of a bodily burial? Does that matter at the time of the rapture? The eternal life that is within us is the Holy Spirit, in order to inherit eternal life we must continue to walk in the Spirit, Galatians 6: 8-9 "the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life, and let us not grow weary of doing good for in due season we will reap as long as we don't give up." The Holy Spirit empowers us to walk in and keep our salvation it doesn't possess us and control us forcing us to keep salvation. Which would you believe, the Bible or the the Westminster interpretation. Jesus came in the flesh, died on the cross, and resurrected to save His people from sins (Matthew 1:21 ) due to the Law given to Moses. The Law in which we all end up sinners. Jesus came to call the sinners to repentance and fulfill the Law; to free us from the bondage of the Law; to release us from the power of sin and death; so that we become righteous new creation and be reconciled with God for we cannot be righteous by doing the works of the Law. Jesus commanded us to love thy neighbor to fulfill the righteous requirement of the Law. Jesus first coming was not intended so that we can declare our souls "saved" from the punishment of eternal fire in Hell. That would be on Jesus second coming.

    • @stephenyoung1705
      @stephenyoung1705 Před 7 lety

bo ang Sorry, that is blatantly circular thinking.
Jesus said to fulfill the law, as Jesus is God! God can't just contradict himself and God's character certainly wouldn't allow it. That doesn't mean you're damned if you don't fulfill the law perfectly. Only Christ has done that.
Here is your thinking. "Jesus died so that fallen man can be reconciled to God. Jesus tells fallen man to not be fallen and thus when fallen man continues to be fallen he is unreconciled to God."
Here is the next logical progression of your train of thought. "Since fallen man cannot be righteous, then therefore Christ died in vain."
Faith without works is dead(James), but one is not saved by works. Go read your Bible, if you won't listen to Pastor MacArthur.
Do you judge others when they do not love their neighbor?
Paul has something to say about that.
      Romans 2:1
"Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.”
If you think you are righteous under the law, imposed by God the Father or by Jesus, you are gravely mistaken.
It is by grace and faith alone we are saved.
All I can offer you is a prayer.
In love and to God alone be the glory,

I think you misunderstood the simple word "save". So let us start from basics to avoid misunderstanding as to the real purpose of Jesus first coming by taking one simple question at a time : Did Matthew 1:21 state that Jesus came in flesh "to save his people from their sins" or "for the salvation of their souls and to set His people eternally secured" from punishment?

    • @stephenyoung1705

bo ang Matthew 1:21 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[f] because he will save his people from their sins.”
The Bible is inerrant. God does not contradict himself. Therefore one cannot interpret one single verse of scripture in such a way that contradicts another single verse of scripture. One must interpret scripture through the lens of all other scripture.
      Philippians 1:3-1:6
I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, 4 always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, 5 for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; "
"From the (First Day) until now"
As a stinky, fallen, depraved, deprived, corrupt, sinful, dead in my trespasses, worker of inequity, with a small spark of regeneration from God, not from my own merit for the reasons listed before, He who had begun a good work in me was and does complete it in me until the day of Jesus Christ.
Sorry. Continue on with your logical progression/deductive argument.

Isn't it peculiar how some people have itchy skin? especially itchy scalps, no matter what brand of anti itch shampoo they use none of them work at all. The manufacturers blame dandruff but it's not dandruff.
If it all becomes too irritating people go to skin specialists who invariably direct them back to the use of anti dandruff shampoos. a waste of time and money.
The itch becomes so bad that they are continually scratching their head and attacking it with combs and brushes, it's almost as if they are cursed.
The worst times are when they are in company, say a Dinner or a Party and they know everyone is looking their way, they try to be discreet but it's so obvious as they scratch and scratch, so embarrassing.
Then there is that itch on their backs, and it always seems to be in a spot they can't reach with either hand, nobody carries a back scratcher with them. Elbow itch is the worst, right on the elbow of either one arm or both. They have to scratch it and as soon as they stop it gets worse. Elbow itch can last for weeks.
People with a plethora of itches should look back into their past history and try to remember if they have offended or insulted anyone who seemed a little different or had different religious beliefs, especially Pagans or Satanists.
They should go out of their way to find those people and apologize. They might feel a little better.

"Perseverance of the saints=works salvation=no heaven"
I read this as if 'perseverance' applies to the 'doing' of works.
I think, while you may see ongoing works as fruit, perseverance pertains more to 'in believing in your heart'. We continue to believe, and in response to that continued belief inside, we continue to bear fruit in the form of works as a result of that internal ongoing (true) belief.
So, the subtle, but very key, difference here is in what you define as the 'cause' and what you define as the 'effect'.
Works cannot 'cause' salvation, but true salvation (internal ongoing faith) definitely 'causes' works. Only God (and maybe the individual) can really tell the difference between the cause and the effect, so I find it easy to get confused as to where someone really stands simply through my limited external observation.

He said that he believes, "That they got it right." 👿👿👿...Then referring to these creeds writers as the Westminster devines. To think of such a reference towards a man as errant is eternally understated. Such a commentary is blasphemy. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

Do you believe that the Bible teaches that God is Sovereign over everything visible and invisible, Psalms 103:19, Daniel 4:35, Psalms 135:6, Isaiah 45:7, Ephesians 1:11-12, proverbs 21:1, Deuteronomy 32:39, Isaiah 14:24. There many, many, more Scripture on the Sovereignty of the Almighty God. He is, I AM THAT I AM, you
will do well if you humble yourself before the Almighty God and give Him glory for who He is. You will never earn salvation by your works, (i.e.) your free will never. And if you truly believe that you possess a FREE WILL . I have a proposition for you. Since you believe you are a free moral agent, although a fallen one, a sinner like all of us, then please why don't you enlighten us how you use your free will, to never sin. If you really believe that you have a free will, stop sinning, use your free will and live a perfect holy life before God. There is none righteous no not one. Romans 3:10-12. Can't you see how foolish it is to believe that sinners who are dead in trespasses and sins, Ephesians 2:1-5. Please read it
can use their fallen free will and choose by themselves with their free will Jesus Christ and His Salvation. If you believe that, then God is going to rebuke you for your pride, and your boasting. No true born again Christian, will boast in His presence. 1 Corinthians 1:29. Ephesians 2:8-9.
Everyone of us who are saved, are born again, by the Holy Spirit of God. John 3:1-21. The Holy Spirit by regeneration of our spirit, soul, brought us back to spirutal life, when we were born again by Him. We were dead spirituality before we got born by the Holy Spirit. Where is your free will in this great work of the Almighty. Foolishness all you who believe because of your free will, you are saved. Nothing but fallen sinful pride, on the part of those, who try to steal God's God's glory and His His Devine power by which He brought us to faith in Him and Salvation through the cross of His beloved son Jesus Christ, who died for us His sheep. John 10:14-16. Jesus said, I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so i know the Father, and I lay down My life for the sheep.
And other sheep I have ( Gentiles) which are not of this fold. Them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice, and there will be one flock, and one shepherd. Read these words of Jesus very carefully, and you will know that He, who alone has the free will to grant salvation to whomever He pleases as the Father God, draws us to Him. John 6:44. Jesus said, No man ( that includes you Bill) can come to Me, unless the Father who sent Me draws Him, and I will raise Him up at the last day. You still want to insist on your so called free will. Your argument is not with John MacArthur, nor me, nor anyone else. Your argument is with the Almighty God and His word of truth. You better humble yourself before Him, and repent of your foolish pride and give Him glory. He holds your soul in life. Psalms 66:9. Or maybe you believe that by your free will you are able to leave and breathe and have your being. Nonsense, this so called fallen human will. Nonsense. Foolishness. Pride, and we all know what God thinks of man's pride He hates it, why because it is Satanic since he originated pride within himself. May the Lord Jesus Christ, open your eyes to His truth.

@@billerickson5604 Neither does it die due to our neglect. It is an eternal, immutable give from God. In our rebelliousness, we sometimes walk in darkness, and we can live with a broken fellowship with God. But if you're truly one of His, you will not enjoy your sin. He scourges all whom He loves, and He will make your rebelliousness uncomfortable. But if we persist in that state, it means that our eternal heavenly rewards will be sparse. But we will not be ultimately lost. On the other hand, If we strive to walk in the light, we experience the joy of our fellowship and salvation, and our heavenly rewards will be plenty.
