Should Biafra Secede From Nigeria?

  • Calls for a separate state called Biafra in the east of Nigeria have been given fresh momentum in recent months after calls by activists and large protests. But how widespread is the support for Biafra in Nigeria?
► Subscribe to BattaBox on CZcams: goo.gl/4dgy2r
The new Biafra movement is being spearheaded by the organisation "Indigenous People of Biafra" or IPOB, led by activist Nnamdi Kanu.
BattaBox heads to Ladipo market in Lagos - the land of the Igbo people in Lagos - to ask if people think Nnamdi Kanu is justified in his calls for a new Biafra.
"I believe Nnamdi Kanu is doing the right thing, at the right time. I feel this because we know we are cheated by the Nigerian government," says on Igbo marketer.
"It's the right thing because we are just like a slave - we are Israelites, we are not Nigerians, we need to divide," says another man.
Photo of Nnamdi Kanu released from prison on bail on health grounds and with strict conditions.
Nnamdi Kanu is a British-Nigerian political activist and the director of a London-based radio station Radio Biafra. However, the cause he promotes is not new.
Biafra, officially the Republic of Biafra, is one of the first major secessionist movements in post-colonial Africa. Biafra compromises the Eastern, majority Igbo regions of eastern Nigerian and took its name from the Bight of Biafra. The secessionist movement and Nigeria's attempt to stop it led to the Nigeria-Biafra war from 1967-1970, in which an estimated 1 million people died in fighting and starvation.
Photo of Biafra troops fighting against the Nigerian Federal Government.
The end of the Nigerian Civil War and the surrender was managed under the motto: "No-victor, No-vanquished." This ensured there were no official recriminations, and although the violent eruption was not forgotten, it was largely ignored in the official history of Nigeria. And, slowly, as the older generations who remember the horrors of the civil war die, and a younger generation who are brought up on the myths of the war face new economic and political challenges in Nigeria - the symbolism of Biafra has taken on new meaning.
"Nnamdi Kanu has just come to rescue Biafra from the bondage they are in the hands of Nigeria," says on marketer in Lagos.
"Biafra is because of marginalisation, the Ibgo youths feel abandoned by Nigeria," explains one market trader.
Photos of Biafra protests in London - the internet has allowed the Igbo community to organise a global movement focused on calls for a new Biafra.
Everyone BattaBox asked in Ladipo market supported the call for a separate state of Biafra.
The Nigerians government has so far resorted to a mixture of tactics, from harassment and intimidation, to political acquiescence to calm the agitation. However, as the Nigerian economy deteriorates, so calls for Biafra get louder.

Besides, there is no single help this government is giving them yet they're the richest individuals in Nigeria today.. upon all the oppressions on them. Biafra should dialogue with hausa Fulani govt and give them every resources in the land. So they can let them go freely. Any igbo man thought is to grow from grass to grace so I believe them, they can stand and do better than Nigeria itself without resources

Michael Odafe . 5 million or 8 millions. I hope they allow this people to go. But Nigerians are very kind people. They know over 95% of them will starve to death. Because. They don't have anything to proud of as Biafra. They're shouting business, what business? The importation of fake product. Plastic rice. Fake drug's. And condemned spare part from abroad. When they leave. Nigerians have over millions of people to replace them. The Hausas have everything to survive as country. Because the Hausas are the number 1 in Nigeria in times of agriculture. I pity those innocent hard working Igbo's, that believe that all this agitation are just selfish interest.

God bless the Igbos... God bless Nigeria.... God bless Biafra....Kanu has sparked and ignited the spirit of Biafra in the south east and south south region....the question now is how would the Nigerian leadership respond? by guns ( we have seen that before), with sincerity on the root cause (we haven't and are yet to see this approach). if the Nigerian state can not leave up to its promise for the people of the Biafran region. Then it becomes safe to say that Biafra is a very viable path forward.... As history has it, since the end of the civil war, the efforts to rebuild the impacted biafran territory by the war were non existent and is still visble till this very day (50 years later)... however we have seen the enormous relief effort going to the North to ameliorate the impact of the boko haram scourge (P.S: The quest for Biafra is not being equated with boko haram).

Tell all the northerners and Yorubas to note it down. All these northern leaders who are boasting, the arewa youths, etc.. it shall happen to them like a dream., hahahah!! that day all the sins of the northerners shall be exposed and their posterity shall suffer and pay for all their sins.

Temitope, thanks for your honesty.....but to be frank. To get freedom in Nigeria for a just cause like Nigeria...you can not afford to blink or speak with soft tones.....The people of the Biafran territory have been clearly Marginalised without recourse ( and this is done so blatantly). It would be very peaceful, if we conduct a referendum for Biafra territory..but rather the government has sent Army to South East for "Python Dance"..The govt never learns, rather than given people a reason to give Nigeria a chance... the government has further ensured the alienation of the Southern people (especially the Igbo speaking states), what can be worst? even as a Yoruba man Temitope, I'm sure you'll agree this act by the government is very provocative.....like the president has no political adviser.... this act alone leads towards a dangerous path.. especially given the fact that even in the international community Nigeria really has no real ally (UK - addressed the govt as fantastically corrupt, Germany - the president told the current Germany female chancellor that women belong in the bed room and US - Failed to sell weapons to fight boko haram)...The world has change and people are indeed watching.

Yoruba and Hausa, Have You heard it...... 100% igbos interviewed here are in full support of it so let it go. This is the way referendum is actually going to be successful if the vote is taken. I noticed this thing bothers the yorubas more than anybody because you people rely on igbo labor to better your community. My advice for you is to look forward on how to achieve oduduwa because Biafra will be actualized. Igbo people also know that yoruba cannot exist with the hausas alone, they will invade and takeover you people's land, this is also another reason you need the igbos around. Kwara State is gone, more are coming. All Hail Biafra!!!!
