Not only is Tom an incredibly talented musician, singer, and writer, he is such a beautifully committed family man. One of the many reasons Tom was and has remained my idol and inspiration for 13 years is because he works bloody hard and puts his everything into every aspect of his life. He is the reason I sing, and the reason I want to work hard to get to where I dream of being. Just keep doing YOU, Tom, you truly are awesome (even if you're late for weddings) xx

Oh, Tom. It really saddens me that people are judging you so harshly. You're so lovely, and clearly love your kids and your wife. And you work hard, as we can see from all the projects you've got going on. It just disappoints me that people would try to tear you down. Keep going, though. Leaving the haters in the dust is what they hate (and fear) most, if my experiences are anything to go by. :)
On a more positive note: I'm getting really excited for the book, by the way! :D

I can't believe you feel you need to justify or explain that photo. It captured a lovely moment. Would never have even thought there was any sense of neglect.Unfortunately you will always get people who have to say something ridiculous. Also, I'm guessing you have worked hard for your lifestyle. Something we are all capable of doing should we choose. You are a great dad and your family are all amazing! Thank you for sharing with us 😊

No need to explain yourself. I worked in an office when my kids were small, then had the opportunity to work from home (same job). I will tell you from experience that it is much harder working from home with everyone expecting you to be at their beck and call. Work is work, no matter what you do. You are very lucky to have the 'creative gene' :-)

Other people shouldn't be making you feel bad for having the life you do. Honestly, comparisons are horrible. People should be grateful for what they have because someone will always be wishing they had something that you have. That person had a dad that worked two jobs, they had a dad at least... Ya know? Tom, you're awesome. Don't change!

  • @XxMcflyhyperxX

Tom shouldn't have to justify himself or his life choices to anyone, there's always going to be people who will put you down no matter what you do. He is such a hard worker and a total inspiration to me and I'm sure many other people. Of course I don't know him personally but with everything he has achieved throughout his life, whether it be writing award winning songs, selling out tours, writing novels or becoming a dad, it's clear that he puts his all into everything he does. I think everyone should be a little more Tom :)

you shouldn't have to explain your life to a stranger, you don't have to excuse yourself for the life you and your family have. No one came to your front door years ago and told you "hey, do you want to sing these songs in this band?" No. You worked hard, your built your own future, a future you were passionate about and that is not lucky, that is hard work; it is knowing what your goals are and fighting hard to achieve them. Like you said, it is not only about opportunities, it is about taking those opportunities, and that takes courage. I myself have to congratulate you because you and your wife both have jobs, and your job in particular requires you to travel a lot, and still you guys have managed to bring up Buzz and now the baby perfectly. He seems happy, he is loved, and the most important thing is that even though his parents work he gets to be with them and he gets all the attention he needs. You are a working dad, because if you weren't we wouldn't even have a video to comment.

Someone once said to me "Find a job you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life". And I think that is so true. Yes, Tom, you have an amazing life filled with opportunities that you have worked hard to create for yourself, and you shouldn't have to justify why you enjoy what you do. I would love to find a job that I enjoy as much as you enjoy your job, one day maybe I will. But it's not been handed to you on a plate. Ignore people like that, they are unhappy in their own lives and project on people like you who they think are privileged but I don't think you are I think you are humble and grateful.

"I also have to work hard to stay lucky." - EXACTLY!
It bothers me to no end that people cannot understand this! I get to be one of the "lucky" persons that works from home with something that they love, but also has no weekends, no schedule, no routine. Yes, I can travel on a Wednesday and get a week off. But I also have to work endless hours to be able to do that. The fact that I have a flexible agenda and no boss doesn't mean I work less or that what I do is less worthy. If only people spent the same amount of energy they do on judging someone else's lives to get up and get what they want...
This is probably my favorite video of yours. I really appreciate your honesty, in all aspects of your life. Thank you so much for sharing your light with us.

God, i would just love to sit down with Tom and have a glass of wine and a chat. He's just so positive and upbeat and a great role model. We're the same age and ever since I've been 15, he's sort of drifted in and out of my life at various intervals. It's not an obsession but it's just healthy inspiration for daily life. Every now and then, i just look at his videos and Mcfly's videos and watch the bands relationships and the dynamics between them and it makes me so happy. I can't tell you the amount of times that I've re-watched old Mcfly videos of the band laughing and it makes my heart warm. That moment when someone does something funny and then the next few seconds after it when everyone else cracks up will always be slightly mesmerizing to me. I'm really not even really a fan of their music tbh but I am huge fan of Tom and McFly as just great human beings. Tom, you guys are great. thank you.

I consider myself to be very lucky to get up and look forward to being with my clients (I am a hair & make-up artist) knowing that they have had a boost by getting a new haircut or advice on changing their make-up, it may not have meant I had to study for years or go off to university, but it got me doing exactly what I feel I get most enjoyment and fulfilment from,so, on that note🎶......keep doing what you love Tom because you do it so well❤️

I never comment on these videos but this one really got to me. I've always hated the notion that if work isn't miserable it doesn't count as work...or worse, if it's creative or "fun" work it must be easy and should never be complained about. Pursuing dreams and accomplishing creative feats takes a tremendous amount of bravery, energy, dedication and struggle. On top of that, no matter how hard things get it always seems inappropriate to complain about the stress and fear that go along with it. However when a creative venture works the thrill and joy felt by artists can be incredible and worth the heartache! Tom, what I loved most about that photo was the fact that even though you had work to do, you WANTED to be home and beside your son. That's a role model move, in my opinion. The fact that your family is as important, if not more, to you as your creative drive and projects says a lot about you. I think the world could use more imaginative and dedication fathers and partners as you!

Thank you for sharing your journey to get to where you are with us. It's important to remind people that working life isn't easy. Just because it seems like what you're doing on the outside looks like a lot of fun, it's easy and you're living the dream - it can be deceptive....yes it's a privilege to have a job you're passionate about and enjoy but it takes a strong person and lot of set backs before you reach success. Us old timer Mcfly fans can all use your songs to relate to how you inspired us on our journeys and for that and how open you are on social media we are all extremely grateful. X

Hey Tom. Thanks for this "rant" tonight. (I'm getting to this a few days late.) To me it was the motivational speech I needed to hear today. I am also self employed and while my income might not compare to yours, I do ok for myself. I have been in a rut - I'm sure you get it. Yes, we have the luxury to sometimes shuffle our schedules around to accommodate family activities etc. But there also times it would be so nice to ask an employer for a scheduled night off and we don't get to. We are obligated to others with our careers at times and just don't get to take that time off whether we want to or not. I'm sure there have been times when you performed while sick when others have the option to call in sick. Anyway, what really stood out to me in this video was your sincere gratitude for how immensely blessed you have been. I needed to think about that tonight and remember to be so very grateful for all I have. Yes I work hard for it, but I have been blessed to be able to do what I love and be in a career where I can earn as much as I want to depending on how hard I work and how much I put into it. Yes, we all have bad days - even when we are living our dreams, we all still have bad days. At then end of the day being grateful for it all puts things into perspective and helps us to keep moving forward. Anyway, your words were meaningful to me and I needed to hear them tonight. Sincerely, thank you so much. I'm feeling much better than I was before I watched this.

When it comes to having children of your own, you literally can't watch them every second of the day. You still have to have a life and of course work too. I understand completely. I don't have children of my own, but I've baby sat a lot since I was in my 20's and also have a God son, children come first but to make that possible, you have to work and do other things too. Keep fighting the good fight Tom! :)

    Dear Tom,
I remember reading about your experience in college in your biography, and I can relate in so many ways! Literally the same experience for me, I took all of the creative classes that nobody really took seriously, and was always wishing to be and to do so much more music-wise.
I am still that dreaming teenager on the bus with her headphones at this point lol.
But every time I listen to your music and I hear a detail in the lyrics you've written, or a riff you've composed, or a rhythm that catches my attention, it gives me a new sense of inspiration (every time without fail).
In fact, ever since I first heard McFly, I remember listening to "Obviously" for the first time and it confirmed in my heart that I too wanted to create something beautiful to the ears!
Since then (about two years ago, just before you and Gi were blessed with baby Buzz) I've listened to your music every day to get me through every commute, and busked every song on my own little ukulele and acoustic.
    Anyway, I'm rambling.. ahah
I just want you to know that you are a great inspiration to me as a musician, and though you don't know it.. you have in certain ways been a musical idol and mentor to me through both your incredible music and personality.
So thankyou for being you, because it's given me the belief and the drive to be who I want to be, and there's no greater gift you can give an aspiring musician than that. x

Besides being little (to none) of anyone else's business - any stranger seeing even just the small glimpses of your life you share online, can see how devoted you are to your family. If you've got the talent and drive to seize any lucky breaks that come your way, then you deserve whatever you've worked for. Hugs from South Africa to the Fletcher family.

Don't ever feel bad for having a dream, then working your guts off for a long time and actually achieving it, so that you can do what you love for the rest of your life because you earned it. The people who put you down for it are just bitter that they haven't achieved their dreams yet (and that isn't your fault) - and the people who lift you up and support you are the only ones that matter. You've done so well for yourself Tom, and you're allowed to be proud of that :)
Plus you and your family are just the loveliest, and watching your videos always makes my day just that little bit better. So thank you for that :) love you guys!

As a fellow artist, I think people come to the false conclusion that because our work is seemingly more fun that it isn't working. Believe me artists have to have discipline and work hard to create their own opportunities. Don't feel bad for living a great life, Tom. You are inspiring so many other people to pursue their big dreams:) xo N

I was having a bit of an emotional break down before I watched this video - I'm leaving my dull, retail job in 4 weeks to leap into the unknown of extras work and trying to get an agent. I started to believe I should just stay in my safe job and then I saw this video with Tom talking about his love of his job and its pushed me again to follow my goddamn dreams!

Tom, you are such an amazing person. You're super talented and a wonderful father to your boys and husband to Gi. Unfortunately people who write comments like that must be unhappy in their own life but it's no excuse. We can tell you work bloomin hard to get to where you are, you should so proud and let's face it haters always gonna hate. You are an inspiration and you rock! Personally, I think that it is amazing that you love your life so much and that you have the chance to do things that you enjoy doing. That's what inspire me. I watch your videos because (well obviously because you're funny and always have something interesting to tell us !) looking at you and your amazing family makes me realize that you can get what you want as long as you put everything you have in it and work hard and passionately for it. I don't think that you're just lucky, I think that you deserve what you get and even if life is really tough for so many people, nobody should try to make someone else feel guilty about being happy.

When I was in a really stressful internship in a neuroscience lab I was having a shit time, but music and books would help me escape from that as I took the subway to work every day. People who are in the arts do a job they enjoy, but what they make helps others who are doing jobs that may be 'harder' in some sense. We need great artists for everyone else who do other jobs society needs, to give them new perspective or just to make them feel better on their commute :)

Ive been working professionally in theatre now for about a year and whilst I love it it really grinds me when people go "ohhh youve got it so good, you're always meeting cool people, you're always at parties" when they don't realise that its quite often 12-13 hour days of gruelling physical work 6 days a week (sometimes even 7) and these parties are a few hours to celebrate the fact that we have achieved something magnificent.
Its life consuming, Ive not been home since christmas and I doubt I will go home before May now. Ive also worked my arse off since leaving school in order to get my foot wedged into that door and it took about a year before I finally got my first fully paid job.
Having said that I love what I do and wouldn't want to do anything else. I am very very lucky to be in the position Im now in and hope it all only goes upwards. Just wish people wouldn't always make it sound like a doss job!

Tom, I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your vlogs. The keep me motivated and inspired every week. You should never feel guilty for what you're doing for a living, because it is nevertheless hard work, you are not able to be with your family everytime (e.g. while you're on tour) and making your private life public is part of the whole game, too. So I might argue that your job lets you work harder than other people do in other jobs. Giovannas novels inspired me to start writing, too, and a few months ago I finished my own one (still waiting for someone to publish it, haha)... As long as you can appreciate what you're having, you're doing it all the best way. However, you and McFly would still be better if you came to GERMANY, because we're waiting for you for such a long time. You can bring Gi and the kids with you for a family trip, so the distance would not be a problem ;) Greetings from Germany xxx

Tom, in my eyes you and Giovanna are doing an amazing job, your both young and successful and I hate to point a finger at others but anyone that commented negatively about that photo was simply jealous and a tad bitter over you being able to do a job that you love. Finding your work enjoyable is not something you should have been penalised for, and Buzz and Buddy are very lucky to have you both for parents, sitting on your laptop working is no different to another parent watching tv whilst with their child. Ignore the haters they are not worth it!

I really support you for being open about your work because I think some people assume being in a band and famous etc isn't really work but they don't understand the hours of writing the tiring (but awesome) tours, the continuous edits of books! But some people do have to work for hours for the bare minimum and I totally agree it can seem unfair but people shouldn't put 'hate' of a sort on your social media because of it - I think you handled it really well and I completely agree with what you said.Basically, I loved this dear carrie! x
