Iron Maiden had the greatest 1st two albums of all time. It's a shame they replaced the tremendous Hard Rock vocalist Paul Di'anno with that one trick pony opera singer.

Alice in Chains also fits here. "Facelift" and "Dirt" are monsters that are the best they've ever done.

Another great show & interesting to see the different interpretations of the topic. Totally agree with Wildhearts, Oasis, Van Halen & Maiden. My honourable mentions are Giant, Matchbox 20, and Black Stone Cherry. My choice tho’ is Loverboy. Hate the name but love those 1st two albums. The debut has a real edge with Turn me loose, the kid is hot tonite & Prissy Prissy. Get Lucky is more straight ahead great AOR with Working for the Weekend, Lucky Ones, & Jump.

In Van Halen's case I love the first four albums. My favorites in order is Fair Warning, Van Halen, Women and Children first and Van Halen II. I got to see them at the Great Western Forum in June of 81 and the band was killer. I then saw them at the US Festival on metal day and DLR was too fucked up! I also saw them in 2015 on their last tour and DLR was a shadow of what he had been. Eddie, Alex and Wolfie were tight and sounded great! Eddie was why I was such a VH fan and I still remember the first time I heard eurption in 78!

    My pick: Alice In Chains
Those first two albums are brutal. So many awesome riffs, solos, and Layne’s vocals are absolutely stunning. Dirt my favorite album of the 90s and Facelift is one of my favorite debut albums of all time
My 1st honorable mention is Van Halen. Van Halen and Van Halen II. Enough said. VH one of my favorite debuts and several of VH II’s songs are in my top VH songs. Obviously their entire DLR era was amazing and I love all their albums, but man, those first two.
My 2nd honorable mention is the Doors. That debut is basically a greatest hits album. Definitely a top 3 favorite debut of all time. And Strange Days has some of my favorite tunes. Love Me Two Times, Strange Days, People are Strange, and I Can’t See Your Face in My Eyes all are in my top 25 Doors tracks. I think these two are when the doors were their most psychedelic

To be in the UK at that particular part in time was something special.

First band that came to mind
Boston- Boston and Don’t Look Back
Another band that came to mind that would fit this discussion along with your episode a few days ago of bands that should have made it big but didn’t would be
Junkyard- Junkyard and Sixes,Sevens,& Nines. Both fantastic albums in my opinion and a band that should have made it big. If I remember right I believe they had issues with the record label. Great topic and episode! Excellent picks all around but Oasis was the first to jump out at me. Fantastic albums! Yes, they were bigger in the UK but they were played plenty in the States, especially the singles from (What's the Story) Morning Glory. And speaking of bands with sibling rivalries, how about the Black Crowes? I only saw two people mention them in the comments which surprised me. Shake Your Money Maker and Southern Harmony and the Musical Companion, respectively, are excellent albums with several songs that hit were all over the radio from 1990 to 1993. A popular band that has become very underrated over the years and all of their albums range from solid to superb.

It's hard to argue against Ozzy (solo), Motley Crue, Boston, and Van Halen. My only issue with VH is that, IMO, VH 1 is so much better than VH 2 that any pairing of them unfairly warps the sentiment somewhat. Like talking about a typical NHL all-star (VH 2, outstanding) and Wayne Gretzky (VH 1, unbelievable).

  • @jamesmarocco5461

My pick is Masters of Reality. Their first self-titled (1989) album had two songs that had a little bit of airplay; "The Candy Song" and "Gettin; High"...great Blues-based Stoner Rock. Their second album, "Sunrise on the Sufferbus" (1992) is a little more diverse and features the late, great Ginger Baker on drums (and 'vocals' on "T.U.S.A."). The album starts off with hard driving song that saw minimal airplay, "She Got Me (When She Got Her Dress on)" and the album continues with various styles: hard rock, blues, melodic rock and trippy psychedelic stuff. I highly recommend giving these a listen! These are two of my favorite albums of all time! Btw, my favorite bands are Rush, BOC, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and AC/DC among others.

There are some bands that only have few albums, which are all great, like:
    Nick Drake
    Police
    Cream
    Jimi Hendrix
    Joy Division
Then there are some, where the first 2 are great, but not my favourites, like:
    Doors
    Opeth
    Led Zeppelin
    Peter Gabriel
And then there are some, where the first 2 are among my faves, like:
    Dio
    Amorphis
    Pearl Jam
    Santana
    Tori Amos
    Metallica
    Garbage
    Marillion
    Baroness
But I have two bands, where the first two are not only among my faves, but also changed their line up between album 1 and 2. One lost their singer and the other lost their main songwriter, guitarist and singer.
So I would go with Pink Floyd as runner up. The first two albums took me some time to get into, but they are so much fun and I listen to them more than to Dark Side or The Wall now.
And my Top pick would be Candlemass. I like most of their catalog, but those two are on top. Johan left the band after the first album and did no music at all until 2019, when he rejoined with another banger of an album. And Messiah made 3 great albums in a row, before leaving. The band then had some mediocre albums, until he rejoined for the great self titled album in 2005.

    Most of the bands I listen to started out good but increasingly got better. Runs of 4, 5, 6 or more were not terribly rare. Eventually every good thing comes to an end, but the first two being the best two was my take on the topic. For that specifically, I would say;

    Starz s/t and Violation
Ram Jam s/t and The Portrait Of…..
Eddie Money s/t and Life For The Taking

Pearl Jam's debut album TEN is arguably 1 of the best rock albums of the past 30 years. It sold over 1 million more domestic copies than Nirvana's NEVERMIND and they followed that up with an equally strong 2nd album VS. At the time, VS held the record as the highest selling (e.g., 900,000 copies sold) record in its first week of release. What is even more impressive is that Pearl Jam followed up TEN and VS with the commercially and critically successful album VITALOGY. Hopefully, this group of musical aficionados will create a panel discussion regarding the bands with the best first THREE album runs and maybe Pearl Jam will not be ignored in that discussion.

Great show!! Interesting picks. For me it has to be The Doors - first two albums are definitely my favorites and the most important for music history.
HM are Biohazard and The Mission - God's Own Medicine and The First Chapter (although this one is considered a compilation so I don't know if it counts). Wondered no one picked Dio - usually the first two albums are considered his best.

There's a lot to say about the first 2 albums of those southern rock bands: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers Band, 38 Special, Point Blank, Molly Hatchet. To me they're easily the best of those bands. And in another genre, the first 2 Robert Plant solo albums...just awesome! Cheers.

Great conversation. I think of these albums as "make or break" as to whether I would to continue to follow these bands. If a band's first couple albums aren't very good, many times I would move on to another group. All of these albums listed were so good, I couldn't wait to hear each new release.
    Top pick:
Monkees - Monkees (1966), More of the Monkees (1967) Untouchable and outsold EVERYONE at the time including the Beatles!
    Honorable mention:
Chicago - Chicago Transit Authority, Chicago
Dio - Holy Diver, The Last In Line
Michael Schenker Group - Michael Schenker Group, MSG
Saga - Saga, Images at Twilight
Pat Benatar - In the Heat of the Night, Crimes of Passion

Dio would be my #1. Both are desert island records. I would add The Doors and Diamond Head as my honorable mentions. The first DH album has always been known as influential. But Borrowed Time is great, and all of the new tracks on it feel like epics. I just wish they would have used other three "Four Cuts" ep songs on it instead of redoing Am I Evil and Lightning.

I like the Queen pick. I'm not a Queen fan but, I recently heard their first two albums. I'm thinking if they did more albums like their first two, I might be a fan. I'm not a huge Van Halen but, I think their first album is much better than their second. Same goes for The Cars and Boston.
The other band I thought of w/two great first albums is Winger. Their self-titled debut is awesome and the second is good but not as mind-blowing as their first. I'm a casual Def Leppard fan and I'm surprised no one mentioned On Through The Night or High-N-Dry. Most hard rock and metal fans would say they're the best. I, however, think Pyromania and Hysteria are their best.
