  • After my previous videos on electric watches and the more general history of digital watches, I wanted to dive deeper into the particular journey of Casio. This takes us way back to the origins of calculators , Casios move into this space with the relay calculator and catching up with their Japanese competitors Sharp, Canon and Busicom during the calculator wars of the 70s.
    We map their move into the watch market with the Casiotron in an attempt to diversify and compete with the established Seiko, Orient and Citizen. Casio start to get a foot in the game of watches with new complications, including alarms, chronographs, calculator watches and world time. I hope you enjoy the video.
    I want to reference the key source without which this video wouldn’t have been possible. These include:

    Wow. Kudos on putting together such an amazing overview of one of the most underrated god-tier watch brands out there. Everybody aspires to have a Rolex (or whatever luxury Swiss watch you fancy) but Casio is where it all begins for so many of us watch nerds. As for me, I love the early Casiotron models. They are beautifully made and have such distinctive designs.

      I think the Casiotron looks very different from the early seikos. It is true of course that seiko was very much the first mover and innovator in digitals (I’ve done a video on it )

    Excellent video, you cover a lot of ground but keep things moving along nicely. It's interesting to see how different companies interacted with eachother to develop new technology. I think I spotted my Casio watch in there at one point and my solar powered calculator card too👍

    Great video review. I have several Casios and the 158 is my favorite. The backlight is lacking but I still like it better than the 168 because of the thickness. I will be getting an F91 as soon as I find one. Again, thanks for the review.

    A really enjoyable and informative video especially as I own several Casio watches. My first Casio that I purchased was the batteryless digital watch which has a small solar panel on it. I don't know when it was produced by the company originally but think it might be from the late 1980's or early 1990's when watch manufacturers were probably thinking of bringing solar powered quartz watches into the market. I still have that watch now and it is still in full working condition. Many thanks for posting and I have subscribed to your channel.

      Their father Shigeru worked very, very hard. The brothers struggled, to get the company where it is now. However calculator quality is going down after 2015, especially Thailand and Philippine factory calculators.

      Thankyou!! Totally fair point on iconic overuse too! I’m not deleting comments , but I think sometimes CZcams does when there are kinks. The number of little linguistic quirks I’ve realised I do from doing this channel so far is worth the effort in itself.

      @@IlluminatingWatches The entire watch community says "iconic" very very often for some reason. The other day I saw "iconic" in an ad from Omega and realized that it was time for me to blog about it. I realize that it's actually not important and that I have OCD. So glad to hear you're thinking about possibly doing an episode on Casio in the 2010's. I've been a mechanical-watch guy for a while, I disdained quartz and I didn't know squat about G-Shocks. Then just a few months ago I saw the GM-110RB on Producer Michael's channel, spoke the words "O sweet Richard Mille!" and very soon after that I had several G-Shocks and the G-Shock 35th Anniversary Perfect Bible.

    What is the best resource you've found for release dates of the Casiotron line?

    • @IlluminatingWatches
      @IlluminatingWatches  Před rokem +1

      Hey hey! So best resource I’ve found is the casio module list (just google that). This at least gives you the date of when the module was released (QW is in front of each number). The number is the one on the back of each watch with a box around it - but annoyingly this isn’t there on the early Casiotrons as far as I know. The module release is sometimes disconnected from the actual watch reference (new case in older module) so I sometimes just try and cross reference other sources (for most digital watches I’ve used Pieter Doensens book modern wrist watch and trueb et al. Electrifying the wrist watch). Digital-watch.com is always worth checking too - but the release dates can be hit and Miss.
