I'm definitely one of the many who feel like Ace Frehley was the one good thing that band had going for them. I feel the same about Motley Crue. Gene and Paul picked up instruments to make 💰 and get girls. And they were way more invested in image, “shock rock”, building hype through promotion. Cartoons, comic books etc etc meanwhile being just decent enough musically to be passable.

I’ve always heard that Kiss was good with their support acts and remembered them well. When Kiss was playing in Copenhagen about 2009-2010 they had a “meet and Greed” session which Don Powell from the former glam-rock band “SLADE” went to.
Just for fun he asked the band if they “were going to play any Slade songs tonight” and imideately Paul and Gene went - “wait a minute - I know that guy - That’s Don Powell from Slade. A band KISS used as a song writing model when we started” and then came a long story about Slade being support act back in the late 70’s.

It took me a long time to get it, but KISS does fill a need out there, and their music really fills that need for a lot of listeners. To some people, "more needs to be going on" with music to be captivated. Hell at this point, new music, I honestly mostly listen to emerging jazz greats like Jacob Collier, Snarky Puppy, Scary Pockets for funk, because most new music is just BORING to me. That doesn't mean the new music doesn't have value, it really does have value. Just not to you and me and others like us, who need more "going on" in order to feel communicated to musically.
