I served in the military during the latter part of the Cold War. One thing was clear then, as must be clear now: The Russian government will not hesitate to use nukes, if they feel their backs are against the wall. Russia is still the only nuke-capable country on Earth that has the use of tactical nukes as part of their military field manual. That is, they are not afraid at all of using nukes. To underestimate Russia's resolve is to seriously risk global armageddon.
