  • I spent the weekend in New York to see some live music and visit record shops. I thought I'd make a video to discuss the experience and show some jazz vinyl grabs.

If you're new to my channel, what you can expect from me is a vinyl collector's approach to the jazz genre. For years, I've only collected vintage pressings and prioritized originals of Blue Note, Prestige, Savoy, Bethlehem, Riverside, New Jazz, and more classic labels. Lately, with the resurgence of the medium and more collectors coming to the space, the music industry has taken notice and prioritized putting out high quality reissues of some of the best albums ever recorded. Subscribe to my channel to watch me navigate how to rationalize how I used to buy vs. how I buy vinyl records today.

Awesome meeting up! That Joe Henderson on Red is on my want list. I think it's after his State of the Tenor Vanguard BN recordings but has Charlie Haden instead of Ron Carter, which is pretty cool. Nice pickups! -- Mike

There are some bootlegs of the trio with Haden in Canada that sound pretty good. Maybe the money grabbers that I lent my hard drive to will release them too

Hey Chris, just wanted to say that Rudy did record Weston several times for Riverside (Monk too) but for some reason they did not also use him for mastering. I especially love the ten inch Weston did at Rudy's (Trio with Blakey). "With These Hands" is great too!

Guess I'll wear my hockey pads next time I go record shopping in New York. Love those early Don Friedmans.

Hope that the Jazz Record Center on 26th street is in your rotation - always worth a visit and seems the guy still finds collections to add to the already big stock there

For two years I worked right around the corner on 5th Ave. It was the only time in my life that I had so ready access to a record store and was able to go and dig in the new arrivals bins on a regular basis. I haven't been to the annex but I really like the two other locations. The Jazz section on 18th street is hit & miss but I would dig for other things, as well. I had hoped to make it to the record show but family plans got in the way.
Also, surprised, but not surprised, by the aggressiveness of the others at the record show. I haven't experience that very much but I don't go to a ton of shows. What I notice is usually the lineup to get in when it opens. So many people trying to be first! As a NYer I don't put up with that kind of behavior and I open my mouth. But that's me. Anyway...
Hope you had fun in our fair city in spite of those a-holes!

Chris you had some amazing finds in New York that Composers Workshop on Strata is a very tough one to track down along with Steve Grossman . I’m definitely have to take a trip back to New York later this year it looks like you had a blast meeting up with the Jazz bums too.

The Jimmy Smith you got was my first OG Blue Note I found here in Austria, it is a great record. I like Jimmy Smith more when he is embedded in a bigger group.

I didn't know about the credit discrepancies on the CWE album. I just checked mine and it was with the Monk , etc. credits. Also, I picked up a collection of several hundred albums a year ago and there were a bunch of the Timeless and Muse labels still sealed from the 1970s. My best guess was the original owner bought out a chunk of a local record store in my town which closed in the early 1980s since a couple of those store's old price tags were still on some of the albums.
Finally, my son has had recoveries reoccurring track meets up at the NYC Armory in Wash. Heights so it gives me some time to poke around some. We'll be back up there in March and the hotel we've been staying at is literally right across the street from a 2 story record store. Yeah, that's dangerous!
    Great video!

Jim McNeely is underrated. He made a great album on Steeplechase (probably also on Inner City) called Rain’s Dance. I would strongly recommend it.

My understanding is that the Academy on 18th in Flatiron is not related (or is no longer related) to the Academy on 12th or the Annex on Banker Street. I don't know the story there...

What is the taboo on jazz record collecting channels against sharing how much one paid for a record? I don’t understand…at least for the more collectible records- price paid seems to be stealthily avoided.

The high level is that it was monotonous, he doesn’t seem to have enough hours in on improvising to really say much with his soloing, and he didn’t allow his star lineup to share the spotlight as much as I’d like.
