Earlier this week Apple announced a new Apple pencil that works with modern iPads and supported USB-C charging. At first this looked terrific but on closer inspection they are removing the one feature that makes drawing with the apple pencil so nice... pen pressure.

If you don't care about pressure sensitivity, just buy a third party pen for 20-40 depending on how fancy you want it. Paying 80 dollars for this is a mistake.

Fully agree and that's what my company will continue to do. I expect most other enterprises to buy third party ones (provided pressure sensitivity isn't a big deal), as well as the education market, which is likely more cash strapped.
In the construction industry, pressure sensitivity is essentially unnecessary when dealing with diagrams.

This is what I was thinking. Crayon is less finicky with pairing to the iPad (can be done wireless unlike this new Pencil), and is compatible with more iPads. The downside is possibly the lack of magnetic attachment and having hover cursor that the new Pencil has, but attachment _doesn't charge it_ and I'm wondering how often you need the hover cursor without needing pressure sensitivity.

@squashn.695 The crayon was my first stylus with my ipad and I can definitely vouch for it. I feel the hover cursor could be something that people would buy the new pencil for, but as someone with a standard ipad who draws with the 1st gen pencil, I feel hypothetically between the two, someone might aswell opt for the crayon. It has the same pencil tech, and if neither has pressure sensitivity, I don't think one feature should push one to the new pencil, but thats my perspective on it atleast.

But I guess it's easier for businesses and institutions to buy everything from the same vendor rather than having to get the cheapo iPads but then also source Logitech Crayons or similar styluses.

But the sad truth is that we really aren't a big enough market share for Apple to truly cater to us. I just picked up a $16 stylus that does everything this does, even charging with USB-C, magnets, and tilt sensitivity. Even the palm rejection is nice. Missing hover….but……still would rather have this $16 stylus than spend so much more for something virtually identical. I’ve found it exceedingly handy to take with me when I don’t want to risk taking my expensive pencil with me.

The Smart thing to do would be to release a better pencil with more levels of pressure to then lower the price of the regular pencil, but that is a next gen pencil thing likely. My question is will apple finally cave and put buttons/eraser on the apple pencil? Once pencil 2 is the base pencil for all ipads in perhaps 5 years from now I could see apple making a power user pencil . Apple seems to not like the idea of buttons though, but wacom stylus' have had them forever and they are pretty reliable in the longrun too. Since apple got rid of the home button maybe they are downsizing buttons overall, but Macro buttons on the ipad pro would also be amazing. One can dream.

  • @danemeow8

I think they kept the tilt sensitivity in because that it the ‘cheap’ stylus way to get thin/thick lines. It’s not as smooth as pressure sensitivity, but that’s how I get by with my Zagg pencil, and honestly it’s done the job. And the art programs tilt will still work even without the pressure sensitivity. So if my Zagg is cheaper than that new Apple Pencil, I’d probably still get the Zagg haha, kind of a dumb choice for them when they’ve already left that price gap open in the market for others to fill, like Zagg (Logitech?) and so on.
If I were to upgrade my tablet I may upgrade to a full feature Apple Pencil 2 now because I have experience doing good art on my iPad at this point and I do it in place of a desktop tablet. But you can buy a simple desktop tablet for about as much as the Apple Pencil, but I guess it depends on how you work and finding the cheapest way to do that😂

As someone who isn’t an artist, but uses 2 iPads, it’s a little tempting to get as a second pencil. But it’s already super easy to switch between iPads so probably not. I can imagine they’re gonna make a third gen pencil renamed “Apple Pencil Pro” with the next gen iPad Pros. One that has all the bells and whistles for illustators and shifts the charging coil further up or down the pencil so it can charge on the top edge of an iPad and still accommodate a centered camera.

Another thing is that Apple on the pencil listings, each one needs to have on them pen pressure or no pen pressure. Or at least give people the option to compare each pencil so they know what each have. There's no place to see that besides on the News page which is like a current update page on the Apple web store which there's tab to directly get to page for the news about new products. So if the new pencil can be used with the iPad 10, it would be helpful to learn what each pencil has and doesn't have. The computers, iPads, iPhones, and Apple Watches have comparison options on their listings. They have everything listed about which iPad the pencil 1 is compatible with and the same with the pencil 2 listing. It's just that both do the same stuff usage wise besides the eraser feature on the pencil 2 which is more of an extra type of feature. Removing the pen pressure is something that the listing needs to have so people can know if they want one with it or not. Even if they don't know what that is, they should be allowed to be informed about it (in an easy way) and then look up what pen pressure is. Then the buyer can decide if they wanna spend kinda a lot of extra money just for pen pressure. Also, if people want to do skinny to thick outlines instead of just uniform outlines, there's ways to do it without pen pressure. It's just that it would be nice for each pencil listing to have comparison option or what the new pencil comes with and doesn't come with as usage features. I think it's worth the $50 savings for me.

I don't think it is only for education or kids. Even though a lot of people show interest in drawing on the iPad and Procreate, not many people actually do or rather very few professionals use iPad for digital painting. Even the CZcamsrs who buy iPad Pro and Apple Pencil do it to make a review and not for daily use or changing what they have. However, I think most people who use iPad professionally are vector artists and designers using Affinity Designer or illustrator, video editors and so on. No one needs Pressure Sensitivity except for digital artists who use Procreate or similar app. The majority of consumers use apple pencil for note taking, navigation, video editing and vector art that doesn't need pressure sensitivity at all. Anyways, that is only my thought on this subject.
