  • This video is Jameela's chance to be seen. Since she really does not move away from mom much right now....you get a bit of video on Kunda and you will see Kayembe, Tusa, N'neka and Mokolo briefly.
    Cleveland Metroparks Zoo just released an update on Kayembe. Title of video is "Kayembe Development Update" - click on the link below to see it on CZcams

    -In general, gorillas live 35 years in the wild. In captivity they get better food, medical care and have no predators. Life expectancy can range from 50-60 years.
    GORILLA CONSERVATION - one of the easiest things you can do to help gorillas is to recycle your cell phone or other hand held electronic device. Recycling electronics helps support gorilla conservation programs. Cell phones and other electronics contain a mineral called coltan (it is short for columbite-tantalite). Coltan is mined in areas where gorillas live. Recycling cell phones reduces the demand for coltan, which helps protect these native habitats. Some estimates report gorilla populations have declined 25% in the past 20-25 years.
    Kayembe was the first zoo born gorilla at the Cleveland Zoo.
    Kunda is the second baby born in Cleveland in less then 2 years.
    Jameela is the first baby gorilla born via c-section at the Fort Worth Zoo.
    Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, N'neka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, and Kayembe 10/26/21, and Kunda 7/19/23., Jameela 1/5/24.
    The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

    Kayembe is such a treat to watch. He seems more relaxed around Jameela now that he has been allowed to interact with her a little bit. Freddy is such a wise mother and very patient with his antics. He reminds me of a toddler just buzzing about with so much energy.

    I absolutely adore this inter family unit of Fredd, Kayembe and Jameela, at the start it just looked like a family picnic with Little K sat nicely (still for a change 😂)
    I also notice compared to how little K was carried, Jameela likes to be right up there close to Freddie’s head, in on all the goings on, she’s a little fire cracker for sure and think she’s going to enjoy ruff and tumbles with her brother when she’s a little bigger, can’t wait as they are super close already.
    Thanks Larry for you’re efforts bringing us this wonderful content, we appreciate you 🙏🏼

    I find myself getting rather tearful when I watch this beautiful troop. If ever there was proof you don't need to give birth to be a mother Freddie is it. From that heart-stopping moment Jameela was left in the enclosure and Freddie just snatched her up and held her close, "you're mine", she has been a loving mother.

    Jameela learning as quickly as Kayembe did, they’ve got an amazing teacher in their sweet and socially savvy Mama. So cute and that picture of Kayembe at the end about not tapping on the glass is where you can see that Kay and Kunda are siblings. It’s their eyes around their cheeks and their mouths. They have their different MaMa’s nose’s but Mokolo’s genetics are obvious as well. Wonderful content as always that so appreciated Larry. 🦍♥️🙏🏼♥️🙏🏽♥️🦍

    Bigfoot babies stay attached to the mothers body, head area, until they are able to walk. There’s a famous Bigfoot photo out there with a baby attached to the mothers shoulder. Rumor has it that they’re actually an ancient tribe of Native Americans. If you believe in that stuff. I can’t say one way or another but Jameela and Kayembe are doing fantastic… Kunda too. Can’t forget any of the babies. This is a beautiful gorilla family. And the silverback seems to be a very, easy going guy… not like other silverbacks that are not so nice. If I’m ever in Cleveland.

    The new camera is great…much improvement on the pictures. The music however, distracts from the naturalness of it all.

    Thank you very much. The gorilla families fill my heart, as I learn more about them. I'm curious if they are shampooed periodically. I ask because there are videos where their fur looks so clean and is sparkling in the sun, and others where it's not-so-much sparkling and seems more dull. I was curious and asked "Alexa" and the reply was that they were shampooed with "Gorilla Shampoo" and had to wonder if it was a prank (answers are submitted by Alexa users after all) after I couldn't find a 2nd source for that information. Thank you again for all you do!

      My understanding is there is a hands off approach with these gorillas. So there would be no shampooing of gorillas. Any training done with them is to facilitate medical examinations to occur.

      Inside there is glass and barriers (ropes) are positioned to keep guests 7 or 8 feet back from the windows. Outside you see braided rope or metal mesh, or large glass windows (2).

      Sometime in the future… the last time I shared what I used 2 people started their own gorilla channels. One even copied my videos , he didn’t even edit any of it. I got that one shut down, the other disappeared. So I won’t make that mistake again.

    Jameela was 2 months early. Do gorilla preemies have an adjusted age like human babies do?

    • @larrysanimalsafari
      @larrysanimalsafari  Před měsícem

      Well…. Both Kayembe and Jameela were 6 weeks premature. Both were started on formula since they were not being nursed by a gorilla until 12-15 weeks of age. I don’t know if those two can be put in that category - since that formula diet seems to have given them a boost.

    Hi Larry
    Thanks for the great video 🙏
    I have some questions, but only answer if you feel like it.
    1. What happens behind the scenes with the keepers and the gorillas? When do they go in, how often, clean up poop, remove a sick gorilla etc and
    2. It’s about you and how you have come to have your channel.
    Kindest regards
    Terry

    • @larrysanimalsafari
      @larrysanimalsafari  Před měsícem

      Keepers go into the exhibit everyday! The gorillas have a downstairs living/sleeping area. When the gorillas are outside or in downstairs keepers have to clean up all uneaten leaves/branches and clean up poop. Then if the gorillas will be in that part of the exhibit that day they have to “dress it”. Place fresh lettuce/greens throughout the area, place browse/branches throughout and. Hanger any “enrichment” items - like for cleaning them or provide different items. I can’t say too much about sick gorillas. FYI keepers always wear a mask / like we all did during Covid. Now that temps are above 60 degrees, this cleaning and prep must be done outside as well. Channel question I’ll answer later - editing right now.
