      In both these cases, yes. But how far does "that close" extend? I've seen pitches called strikes that weren't particularly close, and someone will almost always say "swing the bat" as if it's a hitter's job to flail at anything close so the umpire can't miss the call.

Shouldn't fool the umpire since he's looking at the ball over the plate, has this been coached in the present day? The days of holding the mitt for strikes, close or not, seem to be over. When I worked over a decade ago, I wanted to get a clean look at the pitch without unnecessary movement by the catcher.

  • @jfejapan2829
    @jfejapan2829 Před rokem

    This is the first time I've seen something with the 'zero error' system that I have to question. The low pitch to Turner was below his knees, and the strike zone is defined as 'a point just below the kneecap'. I understand that the system is using actual physical measurements, but it seems like that pitch was low regardless. Turner is in his normal batting stance, and the ball is below his knee. See 1:15-1:118 of the video. Is it possible that the baseline was set incorrectly for Turner's at bat?

    • @almostfm
      @almostfm Před rokem +2

      There's another thing to consider. My understanding is the measurement is taken at the front edge of the plate-it's possible for a ball to be in the zone when it crosses the front of the plate, but not by the time the catcher catches it several feet later.

    • @teebob21
      @teebob21 Před rokem +1

      @@almostfm Correct. Automated ball/strike systems do not call pitches the way the rules define them. In fact, ABS doesn't even track the ball all the way to the plate. It's measured at a point after the pitcher releases it, and its position, velocity, and spin rate are measured. The rest of the pitch is simulated by Trackman. Hawkeye Tennis works the same way: it's not reality, it's a simulation.
