When Hawaii was an independent country, they helped out the US by allowing a naval base and allowing American businessmen to establish sugar cane plantations. Americans in the kingdom returned the favor by staging a coup, overthrowing the monarchy and getting Hawaii annexed to the US.

Yeah, that law is to prevent officers from raping suspects. The way they would get away with it before was by saying they "employed" the suspect. @draconariousthegamer1444 Před 2 lety +15

@@CatherinePuce I actually disagree on this one despite it sounding like metric common sense. See basically what this palm tree law would do from my understanding is link the capacity for development to the capacity for sustainable nature. If you can't keep even just the dang tree alive long enough to be as tall as you're going to pile buildings up, then the environment (which has been there the whole time and growing ahead of you thinking of this) might not be compatible with more development due to various immediately local climate issues. From the wording we have here, you basically have to prove that you treat nature well enough and/or realize when an area isn't actually fit for tall structures as the lack of tall trees may tell you. Can we do some genuine science about this? Oh probably and maybe Hawaiian natives may even be interested in that, but you and I don't have that info while the Hawaiian natives have spent countless generations on this stuff. I think this is one case where generational wisdom can come first. This law is just another example to me of the saying that indigenous people are essentially environmentalism personified. GRANTED I'm basing all of this off of hearsay from online videos so.. grain of salt. xD

Haole means not native/Polynesian, often of European descent (white). It can also be used for main lander...which is less good. It's not necessary an insult, and Hawaii has a pretty unique relationship with foreigners and mix bloods (Happa), so the context matters more. So like unlike alot of other cultures that were invaded being called half doesn't hold an inherent negative connotation. Interestingly Happa is often used by mixed people of Asian decent(usually east Asian like Japanese, Korean and Chinese), especially in California. That in part because thous communities stayed in Hawaii for a time, and they picked up the Hawaiian pidgin slang. That said it's becoming more controversial for non-native Hawaiians to call themselves happa.

I asked one of them once "how do your friends tell you apart?" She replied honestly in a polite non-sarcastic way "I don't know, they just do".
(Sometimes they wore different coour braids in their hair and parted their hair different ways, like one pulled the ponytail to the left of their head and one pulled it to the right.)
Funny situations aside, that law would have prevented one of them from attending the school since it was a small elementary school with just one classroom per grade.

Hm... the only really strange one is the one with the twins.
    - don't build higher than a palm tree: Yeah, don't ruin the skyline and ambiente of the island (also I read further down, that this is a local law for Kauai)
    - don't annoy birds. Yeah. It's rude to chase them Don't be a jerk to birds.
    - the coin thing? - Yeah a little bit out there, but it's in line with other laws regarding strange signs for drug dealer activity. (Would be safer to just legalize and open dispenseries though)
    - Police not having the naughties with prostitutes during investigation... Yeah. witness tampering, evidence tampering, getting involved and partisan, the whole potential corruption that comes with it.
    - sink the Island... well Ok. that one is also a bit weird. But somehow also cute and that's enough.
