  • Today we take a look at Spike Spiegel and his martial arts - always attributed as Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. But is it real JKD? That's what we're looking at in today's video.

    In 2001 I turned 11 and my step dad let me watch Enter The Dragon and Akira, the later unnerved me for a while to where I didn't want to watch anything serious with shooting, I was shooting air rifles a lot and it hit me hard and stayed with me. Watched a lot of Robotech for a year or two after while I collected the dvds. Then my taste got trash for a while so I missed out on a lot of Adult Swim.

    Man I love Spike and the whole show in general. I think most of the "JKD" with Spike is philosophical and can be seen in his "flow" and stance. There's also some hand-trapping in there for good measure. It's kind of a "theatrical" version of JKD though with the emphasis on flashy kicks, clearly inspired by Lee's movies, and ton is just Spike stunting on folks for his (and our) benefit, haha.
    Really enjoy the pop culture analysis videos. Love to see this series expand to fighting games, there are a ton of characters that embody specific styles and personalities. Tekken might be a great place to start where the motion capture is often really great, with fighters that cover everything from kyokushin and thaiboxing to good ol' JKD. (My favorite character is Lee Chaolan - got them kicks yo!)

    Super fun video, great editing incorporating the (iconic) music. Honestly, I always saw Spike as a kickboxer who loved to showboat with that Bruce Lee swagger in his ready stance. The kicks always looked TKD to me with boxing hands. Hearing your breakdown is points I hadn't thought of.

    Honestly, I've always thought of Spike's fighting style as a combination of Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido (I've seen him use a few joint-locks) and Boxing. The philosophy he holds is definitely JKD inspired, but the arts themselves appear to be the ones I mentioned above.

  • @maxhensley1685
    @maxhensley1685 Před rokem +54

    As far as the authenticity of Spike's martial arts, I interpret a whole lot of what he does in fights as in-universe showboating. Practicing a martial art which emphasizes efficiency doesn't mean you can't show off.
    When it comes to the lead straight in particular, I definitely don't think that's a necessary feature of authentic jeet kune do. On the contrary, I think many practitioners may be inappropriately attached to it as a signature element of jeet kune do, and insist on making it part of their own arsenals because it worked for Bruce, even if it doesn't work nearly so well for them. Dan Inosanto has said that Bruce could shell-shock people with his lead straight, and that he, and the majority of his students, simply can't do that. Some of Bruce's own direct students didn't use his right-hand lead, because they didn't get the same kind of oomph out of it and just didn't find it an effective tradeoff. And is copying something that worked for someone else, even if it doesn't work for you, really jeet kune do?

    • @metrolinamartialarts
      @metrolinamartialarts  Před rokem +10

      I think you're right for some of the fights - he's definitely showing off. But in his more serious fights, he tones it down a bit but still does a lot of showboat-esque stuff.
      As far as the straight lead - I think the concepts branch mainly went away from it whereas the origin branch kept it more due to the delivery systems and footwork they employ. Regardless, if you're gonna show JKD in media, it should include the straight lead.

  • @saberserpent1134
    @saberserpent1134 Před rokem +11

    JKD is more of a philosophy than a codified system of specific techniques. "Incorporate what's useful, discard what is unnecessary". The "Be Water" statement follows this, about "adapting to the shape of vessel", or adapting to the immediate situation. There's a lot of mid-high kicks from Spike, which is fairly unusual in Southern Chinese/Hakka arts. High kicks are seen more often in Northern Chinese styles, but the way Spike combines them is very TKD. Good point about the elbow; maybe some Muay Thai influence? We know he's good with a blade, and blade-throwing, FMA background?
    I think Spike's a hybrid guy, whose probably picked up fighting arts both formally, informally and through direct experience.
    I would say that this falls in line with the JKD philosophy; nothing says you can't look cool while doing it! :)
    Fun Video, Space Cowboy!
