Big Ruckus Clone in Factory Camo: Leike (Similar to SSR Rowdy)

  • A major motorcycle magazine said the Big ruckus looked like a piece of Russian farm machinery. I find it far more appealing than another "me-too" boring plastic scooter.
The Honda Big Ruckus, sold in the US 2005-2006, has been copied by numerous Chinese factories, substituting the 250cc water-cooled Honda engine with a 125-250cc air-cooled engine, usually the long case GY6. It's commonly repeated that this engine was developed by Honda, though I have found no evidence of that, and can't find any Honda product which used this engine. Nevertheless, this is a solid powerplant. The quality of the other components is at the discretion of the workshop that assembles the bike, and can be expected to be lower than the equivalent Honda parts. The wiring will be of lighter gauge, the tires smaller, the plastics softer, etc. Quality control and crating cannot be expected to match a Japanese or Taiwanese bike. This is a tradeoff that you have to accept in order to save 60-80% over the cost of a Honda.
I have highlighted a few of the quirky features of the Big Ruckus and its clones in this 12-minute video. I did not make it for public distribution, but for a prospective buyer. I expect to sell it to on July 23, 2022.
The reason you should watch this video is that it may be the only one made by an owner of both an original Big Ruckus and a clone.
To my knowledge this style has not been sold under any name (like SSR Rowdy, King Kong or Puma) for at least 5 years, but it is likely still being built in multiple Chinese factories. If you know of a US source for these in 2022 and beyond, please comment.
Because of the principle of natural distribution, there are certainly examples which have performed well for hundreds of miles. Feel free to attack me in the comments. I could have devoted a video to the fixes I had to perform on this bike to make it semi-reliable, such as replacing a number of parts broken in shipping with Honda parts, or removing the screw that pierced and shorted the turn signal wiring, but this is just an overview, not a documentary.
    Thanks for watching.

In the 13 years I owned this I never ran into another from the Leike factory or from the Motobravo distributor in California. It would be easier to find a genuine Big Ruckus even though only 1200 or so were sent to the US in 2005-2006. They are pricey and the parts are pricey or unobtainable. Just keep watching ebay if you want either. Consider also the genuine Honda 50cc Ruckus, which is a nearly perfect scooter with the same vibe. I had a Chinese copy of that model and it was too slow to be safe even in the city.

I hope you are not being sarcastic. It started exactly as expected, considering it has a vacuum fuel pump and I always drain the carb when I stop a bike. For serious transportation, when you don't have gravity-fed fuel as on a motorcycle, you should replace the low-bidder vacuum fuel pump with an electric one. Then you can fill the bowl before you engage the starter.

Is the honda big ruckus and the clone the same demensions? Length width height

Yes. The frames are nearly identical. I was able to replace plastic body parts and the seat bottom with Honda parts. The wheels are smaller diameter, so it sits a bit lower. The suspension, front and rear, is different and inferior. And as I mentioned, the air-cooled clone is 100# lighter, with half the power, so they are quite different bikes. If you can find one, and can afford it, the Big Ruckus is the way to go. It will never decrease in value.

I'm 79. I don't plan to sell the Big Ruckus (which is a gem, with 1000 miles), but my heirs will unload it, perhaps on ebay.

Hey question I'm in Virginia too do these have to registerd as a motorcycle or can you register them like a moped

It's a motorcycle in Virginia, meaning you need a motorcycle license, motorcycle tag, yearly safety inspection, insurance and to pay personal property tax (though it works out to zero in my county). Up to 50cc you need a tag and government-issued ID, but none of the other costs.
