Historic Hovercraft Face Demolition Threat

The Homes and Communities Agency announced plans to build homes on the M.O.D site in Lee-on-the-Solent last month.
The Hovercraft Museum Trust falls within the earmarked land for construction and now two historic hovercraft machines are at risk of being demolished. Our reporter has more.

It was a HUGE step backwards losing the hovercraft. But good old UK we throw away EVERY bit of technology we invent to USA! THEY now have
Military hover craft, we scrapped Harrier so they took that too and improved it.....Concorde......GONE. We INVENTED railways and yet the UK systems is the WORST in Europe - says a lot doesnt it? well done UK. This was twice a fast as the poxy chunnel and you got a decent view instead of an hours BLACKNESS! very sad how our country has slipped
back into the past.............throwing away our industries! Makes me ashamed to be British at times the way we have let our once Great country go to the dogs and get covered in weeds......

Sadly sentiment does not pay the bills. Whilst both Concorde and the hovercraft were technical achievements both required massive taxpayer support for their development and the world market for both of these forms of transport was very limited as demonstrated by history. If the SST had been a good idea Boeing would now be providing it.
The mess of UK railways is a product of nationalisation, luddite trade union working practices and lack of long-term political commitment to the electrification of the rail network which has taken place on a start-stop-start basis since the 1950s. If the Soviet Union can electrify all the way from Moscow to Vladivostok why not all the way from London to Inverness or Penzance and all the commuter services around our major cities?

You don't demolish a hovercraft or ship. You either scrap it or dismantle it.

They park them at the wrong place if they park them at other place somewhere safe then Princess Margaret may be still be with us now.
