comparing sales of halo reach to a call of duty game shouldn't mean squat. This is because cod is released on all platforms.

It would matter if the Xbox sales of COD were beating Halo. There was no cross play at the time and being the platform holder Microsoft would know how much COD on Xbox had sold. As per VGChartz, Halo Reach sold a very good 10 million copies but Black Ops on Xbox 360 sold 14.7 million which was Incredible. Digital was not big back then either so we can assume these figures to be decently accurate.
The other bigger problem that would pop up is people saying multiplayer in Halo is too slow compared to CoDs heavy run and gun style play. Halo's biggest plus to me was the weight to movement and the reliance on the arcade-y jump vs the sprint mechanic. But alas the market dictates the trends.

About master chief’s armor: it was retroactive in style meaning it always looked like this until 2012 when frank from 343 was pushed by an interviewer to explain why the game looked different.
He made up some malarkey about nanobots being used to change the armor while the HUD was remade all by Cortana, it in the end there are plenty of signs calling back to “it just looks different for our viersion” which is objectively better because Bungie used that excuse every change they made from halo 2-3 where a lot of stuff wasn’t even the same model like the elites and marines and Halo 3-Reach where again, everything changed.

I love the Halo 4 campaign. As for multiplayer, it had the best SWAT out of every Halo to date, I played that non stop.. They dropped the ball on the rest of the multiplayer with the COD-like ordinance drops, promethean vision, killcams, ect.. But it is still entertaining when you're playing it. Honestly, I don't think Bungie would've done any better. They started adding way too much game breaking unbalanced stuff in Halo 3 with things like the bubble shield and energy drainer. In Reach it just got worse with armor lock and whatnot.. I love Halo 5 multiplayer, it has none of that stuff and everybody has an even playing field. Its like Halo 2 on crack. The Spartan abilities are great and once you learn to use them to their full potential you start to realize that the skill gap is even bigger than Halo 2.

Equipment was a kind of attempt to add something to “alter the sandbox”, that for the most part in campaign, no one really used during the first playthrough.
They were kinda like megaethers in Final Fantasy. Either too good to use, or not plentiful enough to see lots of use.
Armor abilities were a good start, but jetpack kinda screwed with some map designs, armor lock’s impressions and usages just slowed down the overall pacing of mp (forward shield would have been better), and retical bloom might have made things more casual, but also more controversial.

Billy bob Theredneck What is it that bothers you so much about Halo 4. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not as good as many of the other games but I don’t think it’s bad by a long shot. In fact, I would say if they had better maps and no COD load-outs, it would have the best multiplayer. Movement felt crisp, gun accuracy felt more skillful and refined as opposed to 2-3 where battle rifle/carbine shots would sometimes still miss at long distances, and events that happened in the campaign were fun. I loved flying the saber, the pelican, going Mach speed in a ghost, and walking around in the mantis. I also loved the new emphasis that Master Chief was a real person, as opposed to just a machine. It makes for a great, stoic arc. The part where he tells Chief to “Surrender that A.I” Finally the game is beautiful, especially for when it came out. Faces and environments looking better than even many PC titles at the time. I just wish it didn’t screw up in so many other areas. I couldn’t tell you about any of the other characters in four or five, because all of them were either boring or completely annoying. There is no character that is likable like Sgt. Johnson, Arbiter, Keys, or anyone else. Even the villain is just BLAND. So many new designs were ugly, especially the plastic looking spartan armor. Also in the first half, there is so little human interaction that isn’t the Chief and Cortana, which gets stale. I say all this as an opinion obviously, one about a very community splitting game. I just can’t believe someone would say that everything about it was bad, when I believe the game is a 7/10. My fingers are really crossed on Infinite.

Imo Halo 4 really brought a lot to the table. Customization was amazing, the story for the most part was great and interesting, and the Prometheans were intriguing--not that deep or anything, but still a new unique enemy that could be built on in later games. And although fans seem to be split, I _loved_ being able to literally be a spartan fireteam with my friends in Spartan Ops.
And then Halo 5 took literally everything I listed above and shit all over it. Story, customization, and the Prometheans were all bland, boring, and lame.
All they had to do was refine and build upon what they did with Halo 4, and they fucked it all up. Incredibly minimal and foreign feeling Customization with ridiculous loot boxes, a story that wound up being nothing like what the trailers hinted at, and the Prometheans made _even less_ forerunner feeling. Interesting views. Pretty much most of your criticisms of the game and the campaign I disagree with. I'm in the minority here but I enjoyed Halo 4. I loved the new art style/direction, the choices 343i made and I really digged the new storyline too, but I agree with you about how the new storyline was introduced. One of the reasons why it failed for a fair chunk of players was the random introduction of the Didact. Who is this guy? Why does he hate humans? What are his motivations? The explanation was in an animated cutscene locked behind activating all terminals in the campaign. That chore was unnecessary. And there was more pertinent Didact/Forerunner backstory in a separate trilogy of novels (Halo: Cryptum, Primordium and Silentium). The vast majority of gamers wouldn't have heard it and not much would've read it. I did, which is why narratively Halo 4 succeeded for me.
    EDIT:
    Spartan Ops
I was in it for the narrative. I see what 343i was trying to do but it felt tacked on, reused and very wash, rinse and repeat. Great cutscenes though!

I think Halo 4 is criminally underrated. All the friends who I've convinced to play Halo with me on MCC (some of them new to the series, some of them returning after long periods away from the franchise) have all said that they enjoy Halo 4 more than any of the other games and couldn't tell that it released in 2012. Compared to Halo's CE-3 which have shown a bit of their age, Halo 4 to them feels like it could've been made within the last few years as graphically it still looks great and gameplay wise it's got some of the smoothest and most fast paced shooting mechanics of any of the games with a Call of Duty level of polish with things like hitmarkers and sprint (while controversial to an ordinary Halo player) being very appealing to them. I can understand why so many disliked the game upon it's initial release (the huge change in art style, loadouts, ordanance, etc.) but it's still leagues and miles better than Halo 5 in my opinion and still resembled a Halo game without all those power rangers whizzing around the map.

I think 343 did great with what it had, think about it: in halo 3 you literally lose everyone, every main character you loved died, and the arbiter left to go somewhere. You feel lonely and everyone you meet who should become a replacement is just bland and doesn't feel like anything you were used to. In halo 3 it had comedic breaks but here you just truly know the coldness of war, of being alone. Cortana, the last character that MC knows, is dying, so it's normal that he breaks. Other than that the cutscenes and graphics were insane for 360, the customization system, even if there weren't that many good armors, was the best it ever was. They kept assassinations, they balanced the armor abilities, and yes, they did copy call of duty but because Microsoft was and still is forcing them to go for the money. That's why they won't drop micro transactions in infinite.

Despite people in the comments saying that they love the game, for my taste 343 made halo 4 completely the opposite of what I like in a halo game this game had too many changes that it doesn't feel like halo anymore there is a line you shouldn't cross when you develop a new entry in a known series you gotta keep at least 70% of what the previous game had and if you absolutely must change things just keep the small things at least I can't count how many times I jumped over a fence or something just to realize that jumps in this game is lower than that in halo 3 that made the game so much worse for me that's just my own opinion

Unlike Halo 5, I loved Halo 4’s story and music. Neil Davidge and Kazuma did so well at composing the music. Arrival is my favorite song from the soundtrack.
Halo 5’s soundtrack, aside from the theme song is not as great or epic as the previous games. I got extremely upset when I learned Neil Davidge wasn’t composing it. I enjoyed the flavor he brung into the mix.
The Didact is my all time favorite villain. Wished Halo 5 had something like him instead of bringing back Cortana without any explanation as of why. Warden Eternal isn’t that interesting. Sure the overall design of him is cool, but he lacks character and there’s no justified reason to hate him or love him for what he is.

I have to say all the Halo games were awesome to me, sure I had my minor concerns, but overall they were all good especially Halo 4 and Halo 5, idc what you all say Halo 4 brought something awesome to Halo 4, the soundtrack, the characters, the story. Halo 5 was awesome too, but one thing that honestly did only annoy me the most was that Master Chief was almost taken down by Lock, which was stupid, but besides that it was awesome.

P.S. maybe this is just me being rude, but I feel like your view on the new art style feeling "odd" and "weird" is purely out of nostalgia, which is why you can't exactly describe why you dislike it

The reason Chief is the way he is in he is cause he's trying to explore his humanity for once, he might lose the only person he cares about. And the art style is different cause h4 takes place several years after he, so the covenant have changed there ways, there beliefs and the way they look. Cortona knew something was going to happen, so while Chief was in cryo, cortona released nanites to adapt chiefs armor and upgrade it, therefore making it more powerful.

In H4 you’d just be traveling, see a side path, and in typical gamer fashion check all side areas for hidden items or weapons, and a kill timer would show up.

I'm not using sprint, or armor abilities, and am starting to see more things I like than dislike.
I like how the plasma pistol does good damage again like CE.
I like how the AR has some real punch behind it that keeps it useful.....
I dont like how tacky the plasma pistol is with its charge and how theres SO LITTLE AMMO IN ALL THE GUNS!!!!!

joe morton yeah true... it’s very rare to have multiple paths that all lead to the finish of the level... like that must be hard to do, and might require more resources/time. It’s just nice to see that on the occasions it happens.

This is heavily biased but I love this game. This was the first halo game I ever played on my own. One thing I’ve realized is, the younger generation (which I’m a part of) doesn’t really hold to many grudges against 343 games, I’ve played every halo game so far, and honestly, halo 4 to me is a really good game. While it has its flaws like every game, it still holds up as one of my favorite halo games. While I was alive when bungie halo games came out, I was more mature when halo 4 came out, and since its my first halo game I played on my own I love it, I honestly didn’t know it got hate until a year or two ago, but that’s just me

I honestly didn’t like halo 4. The campaign was pretty good, but didn’t impress me after playing halo 3. The multiplayer was fucked to oblivion due to the cod play style that was implemented to “expand the audience”. The change in art style was also a very big turnoff, like why do the elites look like brutes and how does master chief magically change his armor in cryo sleep. Forge and custom games also got the shaft, like why can’t the flood pick up weapons and why wasn’t the race game mode added at launch, it took them a year to do that. Also, spartan customization was pretty stupid, like this is when Spartans started looking like power rangers rather than super soldiers. These little things KILLED the halo community in terms of the competitive scene, the customs and forge community, and machinima directors. They ALL left. I really hope Halo Infinite succeeds, cuz this will either revive the community, or destroy the franchise for good.

I played Halo 4 for the first time recently. I liked the story and the humanization of Chief and Cortana. I'd say it's worth playing at least once.
That being said, wasn't a fan of the execution or gameplay and I don't plan on ever touching it again. Playing ODST for the first time right after definitely didn't improve my view on the game.
RIP way too sexy Cortana character model though.

I've been playing Bungie games since Marathon 2 and I could complain about something in every game they've made, but its the core gameplay and world building elements that keep me coming back in spite of the other changes.
I can't say I agree with the way 343 has altered the story and I do think the series would benefit from a stronger dose of Bungie design language, but it is what it is I guess. I thought the design of 4 felt a lot like a linear Metroid Prime in some ways, which was cool but hopefully Infinite brings the series closer to its roots.
Either way Halo 4 was a blast to play and I love how nimble Chief feels in campaign. Would have been nice if there were playlists without abilities or loadouts. I'm fine with being given options, but they need to be opt-in and I feel that they're better suited to custom game modes.

I'm not really a fan of the Brutes as an enemy, so they were no loss for me. I'm not sure how you can look at Halo 3's graphics and Halo 4's graphics and say Halo 4's are worse...if nothing else, Halo 4 looks phenomenal. If you mean to say that Halo 3 has more interesting set pieces, well, I probably agree with that.
What really seals the deal for me with Halo 4 and makes it one of my favorites in the series is the relationship between Chief and Cortana. And that's probably one reason why Halo 3 was such a letdown for me. I didn't have Cortana for the vast majority of the game, and I was fighting against Brutes and Flood, which are two enemies I'm not particularly fond of. I don't particularly like the Prometheans that much either, but I'm glad the Elites are our enemies again.
The problem is, Halo 5 pretty much screwed up everything.
I haven't played Reach, but I'm looking forward to playing it on MCC when it gets released.
    Right now, I'd say:
    Halo 2 > Halo 4 > Halo 1 > Halo 3 > Halo 5
Halo 2 just had awesome music and the new cutscenes in the Anniversary are just...wow. My only major complaint with 2 was the ending. Halo: CE was my first experience with Halo, so I feel a bit nostalgic for it. I still like 3 a lot more than 5. It's all personal preference anyway. I think we can all agree that 5 is the worst though lol.
