  • While Halo 2 is a masterpiece and majority of people nowadays feel that way, that Halo 2 is one of the greatest video games of all time. But some member of the Halo Community Back in 2004 felt that Halo 2 was bad and straight up hated Halo 2. But why do people think that Halo 2 is overrated?

They just padded out the installation interior Flood parts entirely too much. One of the big complaints from the first game was the Library level being too much of a slog, then Bungie goes in and doubles down on that for H2. They spent too much time making some of the least interesting areas of the game LONGER instead of providing more interesting areas/scenarios that didnt drag out so much. The game definitely needed another couple of years in the oven. By Halo 3 all of the gameplay ideas and level design concepts that they had conceived for H2 actually worked well.
Dont even get me started on the Flood spawning tactics or the inconsistency of certain weapons in certain situations.
This game couldve been shortened by half and still been great. More isnt always better when you pick the wrong things to double up on. My favorite parts of the campaign were some of the shortest. My least favorite parts were some of the longest 🤮

I was in Highschool when Halo 2 came out, and it was such a big deal to me when it was released, as it was the first time I dedicated time to actually go to a midnight release, play a tournament in CE in the hours up to its release, and having fun just hanging out with a bunch of people who were just as much into the game as I was. Granted, I did have a few misgivings about the game, even those are a bit understandable, because at that time, I never thought about the time, effort, and manpower it took to make it, I just wanted to play the game. For one, the level in the demo was never part of the game, and I greatly wanted to play it cause it was what I thought a majority of the levels would be. The graphics kinda was off in same areas of the game, and then the cliffhanger ending. Back in those days, when you know the next game wouldn't be about for about another 4 years, it felt like an eternity to know that it ended on such a sour note. But when I went and played it through the heroic and legendary difficulties, it actually felt more fun, and reading the books to read the lore ended up enhancing my perspective to the world building Bungie set in making this a living, breathing universe instead of that 'next installment of a shooter' like alot of other games tend to focus on.

More recently I've appreciated the forerunner architectures of Sacred Icon as well. I'd argue that since H2 did end up showing more of the same it wasn't as new feeling as what we saw with HCE or say the Ark in H3 but I do think there was still a lot of awe and wonder to be found.

The only thing I've always complained about is that they took out variants like the Jackal helmets and the alternate curvy tank grunts but on the flip side we got some cool looking Elite variants

I was 21 when the game came out, and the hate for it ran much deeper. I played with a group of guys from Washington at the time, and talking online before release we were all hyped for the game just like the rest of the world. However when a leaked online and gameplay went up around August, it showed things that none of us liked! It looked like an unfinished version of the game, because key things were missing. The BR was a 3 Shot Burst all the time, which contradicted what Bungie had just shown at E3 with the Zanzibar gameplay demo. There was also no fall damage, or health packs, so that took a major dynamic out of the game. Also they hyped up these Dual SMG's so much, that the AR didnt make the cut, so every respawn left you defenseless until you picked up another dual wield weapon.
1 week before Halo 2 released these same friends from Washington got to play that leaked copy on a modded Xbox, and told me that the gameplay videos I seen were legit, and the BR was changed, no health packs, no fall damage, no Assault Rifle. They told me the Carbine felt similiar to the Pistol from Halo CE, and that the game was fun, just different, but that was of little solace. So my expectations were tempered for the Multiplayer going in. Needless to say, on launch night, I was in line, ready to go, and after finishing the Campaign over the next 2-3 days, I was completely let down. When i fell back on multiplayer with my friends online, it became obvious that BxR, and Plasma Pistol/Battle Rifle Combos were the new Power Weapons.
Out of those friends from Washington that I played with, 4 of them went on to work as testers on Halo 3, and Halo Reach, and 2 of them still work at Bungie to this day. Its crazy to see how much of a reach Halo 2 has had on the world of gaming.

To be honest, Halo 2 singleplayer had levels who feel incomplete and very easy to get out, when Halo 1 was more harder to break, but a simple granade jump in Halo 2 get out of the way and Legendary alone is broken.
Also, the lack of gravity consistensy in the most of the game was also a factor in the gameplay.
But story was... Interesting, but awkwardly rushed and with a cliffhanger.

  • @catrinasmith5311
    @catrinasmith5311 Před 3 lety +1

I absolutely adore the first three halo games. I honestly love the story, music, worldbuilding, lore, etc. I think that each of the games have their own charm to them. Halo CE introduced us to the Master Chief, Cortana, Sargent Johnson, etc. The story was interesting and when you find the flood, it drastically changes the theme of the game from an action packed shooter, to a horror game where you must survive and blow up the ring or all of life in the universe is doomed.
Halo two added more lore to the story, introduced more characters, and a more complex storyline. The game showed the perspective of the covenant, and it helped to explain to us why they were wanting to activate the rings. I found this very interesting and playing as an Elite, The Arbiter, in fact, was mind blowing. While I do agree that the story left off on a cliffhanger, that just made me want to see the third game even more. I personally think that the cliffhanger left me personally craving more knowledge and more lore and the story. I agree it was kind of anticlimactic compared to the first game, but with the worldbuilding, the story, and the characters knowing what they had to do, I love this game, and the ending hypes me up to play the third game.
Halo three where we Finish The Fight is probably one of the most epic climaxes in gaming history. The music, the worldbuilding, the character development, all of these lead to moments with tremendous emotional value. Saving Cortana from the clutches of the Gravemind, Johnson's death, destroying 343 Guilty Spark, the Master Chief and The Arbiter driving into Forward until Dawn, and leaving the exploding ring. Arbiter making it back to Earth, and we believe Master Chief is dead, but in the epilogue we learn he and Cortana are stranded in space. However, despite the fact that he is not home, he is still alive, as are we, and We Finished the Fight.

I understand how revolutionary it was at the time but for me CE and 3 will always be better. I’ve played through Sierra 117 about 10 different times over the past year and each time it’s still as fantastic as the last. For Halo 2 I thought duel wielding was cool but the level design didn’t quite hit it for me. Halo 3 starts you in a luscious green rainforest exterior showing the counter part of Halo CE where you start in a cold steely spaceship interior. Alongside that you get right into the action in both 3 and CE. In CE Chief wakes up and is rushing through these battlegrounds between these mysterious aliens and you’re human allies. In 3 it takes a bit longer but it’s almost the same. You’re gain control and immediate are given an AR and Magnum. In Halo 2 the beginning is just CE without the excitement of the battles between covenant and UNSC. Now all if this doesn’t fucking matter. I know fuck all when it comes to Halo’s deep design philosophies. But for me 3 will always be the king.

    @scottwatrous Před 3 lety

The only thing I really did not like about Halo 2 at the time (and still somewhat in retrospect) was that SO MUCH HYPE was about Halo series going back to Earth and fighting the Covenant at home.
And it delivered on that! For like 2 levels. Maybe 3 if you count Cairo station. Then just back to another Halo ring.
And then because everyone was so bummed about it, Halo 3 basically had to go BACK to Earth AGAIN. And then because you can't end an epic space trilogy about mysterious alien artifacts at home, they have to go to an even MORE wild and crazy space artifact and then end it on the first Halo again! So it just makes you wonder why they basically had to make Halo 2 and Halo 3 so narratively matched that I to this day forget that half the stuff in Halo 2 wasn't actually in Halo 3. I could have sworn half of the stuff Arbiter did was in Halo 3 until I replayed all the games in the MCC.
So, either they should have skipped Earth entirely in H2, and saved it for a later game, or made at least a few more levels take place on Earth so that it really felt like we got to explore the planet we were trying to save.
If you took for example the Earth stuff from Halo 3 and had that all take place in Halo 2, and then fill in the gaps with the Arbiter stuff that he does; with Chiefs at the end hitching his ride on the forerunner ship that instead of going to Earth was going to Delta Halo.... and then made Halo 3 set both on Delta Halo AND then they go direct to the Ark from there, not only would Halo 2 have really satisfied everyone's fill of Earth levels, the overall story wouldn't have this ridiculous Halo -> Earth -> Halo -> Earth -UBER Halo jumping around effect.
Instead if they made it where Chief gets picked up, goes home, Halo 2 becomes the Empire of the trilogy where the Covenant really screws up everything and it seems like Earth is lost. And then Halo 3 is when they finally arrive on a new station ready and prepared to keep the alien's grubby claws off of it. Fully loaded for battle and ready to rock.
So yes Halo 2 is a good game but it was disappointing when we were promised a lot of Earth and it felt like as soon as we get there, and get our feet wet, we're off back to another Halo ring with very little buildup to the idea. They could have spent an entire game leading up to the revelation that they have found another one, but instead it happens in a few minutes. And then when the 3rd game pulls basically the exact same stunt it was like c'mon Bungie.
At least eventually we got ODST but even that was basically set in New Mombasa so really we have all of Earth and see literally like one city in the entire franchise? We end up seeing more variety of Reach than we do of Earth in the entire franchise.

-the assault rifle sucks. It sucks in single player, it sucked in Custom Edition. Battle rifle is objectively better, you can't deny that. Plus Halo 2 had far more interesting new weapons like energy sword, carbine, fuel rod was actually useable.
-Muted colors? Uh, what? Talk about muted colors in a level like Arbiter.
-Halo 2 had a big ass crunch, but it didn't stop them from making at least more than 1 big open levels, and actually different levels, not half the game be the exact same copy of the first levels. Quarantine Zone, Delta Halo, Metropolis. They're not extremely big, but considering the development hell, it's quite decent. I would so much rather have small maps than having to replay Assault in the Control Room, T&R and PoA all over again with some small twists.
-Materials looking like materials? Dude you're just pulling this random shit out of your ass.
-The flashlight. Interesting. The only level where you really needed to use the flashlight was 343 Guilty Spark. Halo 2 also had a similar level: High Charity.
-metal being shiny. My dude, lighting in Halo CE sucks. You can't see metal being shiny in Halo CE. Most of your points is just ridiculous.
-Quiet time for you to take in ambience? Oh so like the beginning of Uprising?
-Halo 2 had Marty's best work.
-Halo 2 has the best story out of all Halos. It was a lot more cinematic, it expanded on the Covenant and Flood. Levels had far more details than CE. It had dual-weilding. And it gave Halo online playability. Halo CE is still my favorite game. But again, you simply can't deny Halo 2 is the better game.
The only thing Halo 2 failed to match up was the overuse of tight corridors, and that was 100% due to crunch time and having their project discarded months before official launch.

It is my personal favorite to this day. I just wish that the had more time to get rid of those filler stuff and make more stuff that tells story and is super fun and ain't filler.

you're acting like halo/xbox live invented online multiplayer. it might have been you're first experience with online multiplayer but its been around since 1996 on pc and it has been free since 1996.
I would also argue that unreal tournament as a franchise while being less well known then halo is more innovative as I believe it popularized non death match game modes like king of the hill and capture the flag. its engine is also very influential (unreal engine du)
I can defiantly understand a PC player being salty about being asked to pay for online multiplayer in the form of xbox live when they had access to free online multiplayer since quake. pc players still kind of have it good when it comes to multiplayer because we have steam witch from my knowledge seems far better then xbox live and is free.

Halo 2 was very unpolished and unbalanced, with lots of bullet sponges, insta-death enemies, the levels were pretty linear, and the story was rushed.

Back then, I was disappointed by the campaign, although I absolutely adored the gameplay and multiplayer. Nowadays I also enjoy the campaign and like to play it from time to time.
But as I was 17 at the release time, I was kind of simple minded. I expected me as MC vs evil covenant. And boy did I dislike to play as the arbiter. I'm not proud of it, but then, I wanted to not play the campaign, but did it anyway, because I paid for the game. I was like a defiant child. I played all the arbiter missions with a "let's just get through this shit, and I won't enjoy it". I would groan everytime I died, because it meant, that I had to play longer as the arbiter. Today I can just roll my eyes at my behaviour.
Also the fight with Tartarus didn't feel like an Endboss to me. So when I heard the phrase "I'm going to finish the fight" I got super hyped. Like "finally, I got through the tedious part, I can't wait to free earth as the master chief!!!" And then the game ended. I was sooo pissed back then. For me it literally felt like I forced me through this campaign, and I don't even get a satisfying finale.
Today, I can see the way the arbiter missions add to the narrative, whithout forcing exposition on you.
Interestingly, when MCC came out, I talked about the H2 campaign with my friends. Those 3 guys, that played hundreds of H2 multiplayer. And they all three said :"I wouldn't know, I never played the campaign"
I was befuddled to say the least

You know, I first played Halo 2 in August of 2020. I love the story, dialogue, music, and cinematics, but just the switch between Arbiter and Chief wasn’t for me... Not that it wasn’t great, I just didn’t like it. I also thought the ending was too abrupt, but overall, Halo 2 is a great game. There were just things in Halo 2 that didn’t appeal to me. That doesn’t make it a bad game.

From a story standpoint it’s actually really intriguing to have a parallel story, and in retrospect I appreciate Bungie having the guts to go that route. But at the end of the day you’re really booting up the Halo franchise to play as Master Chief, and the Arbiter sections feel like a slog.

I was there when Halo 2 launched and at the time I was in the camp that thought it was absolutely amazing. I loved the single player and put countless hours into the multiplayer both on Xbox Live and at LAN parties. Sure, it wasn't perfect but no game is. At the time the people I were around who didn't like it mostly didn't like the changes to the weapons and balancing. They would talk about how they nerfed the pistol and how the SMGs have recoil like it ruined the game all while not even bothering to learn how to use the BR or learn any of the other new mechanics in the game. The rest were PC gamers who just didn't like that the game was popular and mostly invented reasons to hate it.
These days I still love Halo 2 and regularly play through the campaign but I do notice its flaws more than I used to. Overall, the game is still awesome and the hype for it back in the day was well worth it. You just had to be there.

  • @worsethanyouthink

If you want to discus how in depth halo 2s story, I would discuss how the arbiters story is about the destructive nature of blind faith, and talk about how the characters such as the heretic leader and tartarus are parallels of the arbiter. The heretic leader shows what the arbiter would be like if he wasn't blindly following the people that disavowed their greatest general and shamed him for something out of their control. Tartarus (probably the most relatable villain in halo) blindly following the prophets, but because he he built his entire life around his beliefs, was unable to accept the truth even when told to him by his god, and essentially through a tantrum and self destructed. It's even more profound when you realize that despite being betrayed by tartarus and nearly killed by him, the arbiter doesn't want to fight him.
That's not even considering how the arbiter has to literally be forced to speak to his 2 greatest enemies and one of his dead prophets after being betrayed by them to realize "hey this relationship is toxic" and he doesn't truthfully accept the situation until he is told by half jaw that his old leaders are trying to genocid his race.
He also goes from being the "greatest single threat to humanity" to working alongside johnson and keys to prevent what he used to see as the rapture/his path to a perfect existence.
The reason I feel this is hard for people to acknowledge this game as being great and why they hate halo 4/5 (and will likely hate infinite) is because the chiefs campaigns was about being a vessel for the player to experience the world for themselves instead of telling a real story as the protagonist. most people coming to the series expecting that, the reason reach and odst and wars/wars2 are such highly regarded for the same storytelling is because we don't go there expecting to play as the same master chief from halo ce who just exist in this world like us.

I can maybe understand the idea that Halo 2 has a bit of filler, but compared to Halo CE, it wasn't much better. Out of the 10 levels, 3 take place in the same area as another, but with some changes to the structure or objective. I'd give a pass to the first and last level, but the end of Truth and Reconciliation is the same as Keyes. Two Betrayals is just Assault on the Control Room backwards. Personally I did not see an issue with this, but if you have to be nitpicky with one, you have to do so with the other.
