I just don't get how we got from that great blob of a plant to a bar of Milk chocolate. The same could be said of many foodstuffs we take for granted in todays world. I mean how did we get to making bread & cakes. Who thought to mix those ingredients together, To cook them etc. I mean to make flour in the first place never mind add yeast, milk or eggs. And then for these recipes to go from mouth to mouth and eventualy world wide to where we are today. It just boggles my mind.
I think about this all the time! It's so amazing and wonderful!
I always imagine one weird guy living on the outskirts of a village\cave making weird inventions with cooking. Like deciding to cook meat in water, add veggies and spices and call it a soup. And the whole community avoiding him, thinking he's way too weird đ if they'd only know đ

@@PainEpel Some things will have happened by happy accident like alcahol (wine at least) some grapes probably left out festered & some brave soul drank the results & exclaimed "se magnifique" but even still it really is unbelievable.
The thing is, most things we eat today were totally nonexistent only a couple of centuries ago.
The only real reason why food is so "crazy" today is because we're able to apply all the little pieces of wisdom we accumulated from accidents over the centuries and create something solely based on science.
For example, the first chocolate bar was made in 1847. Till then, chocolate has always been a drink.
abingleyboy I know, I think of things like that too. I remember in Catholic school when I was a child the Nun told us how cooking was discovered. That people had pigs in a shelter and it went on fire, after the fire they were picking up the burnt pigs and one guy burned his hand on a burnt pig and put his finger in his mouth and the grease from the pig tasted good, so they began cooking with fire..LOL...sounds pretty nutty to me...It could have been, but I don't think so. II think it was way before people were putting animals in shelters. Maybe it happened with a forest fire or cavemen putting there meat next to a warming fire and some of the meat got cooked by being too close to the fire? I don't know. Who really does?

Every food comes from fruit technically. Any food is originally from a processed fruit. Whether it be as simple as you taking a plant and fermenting it like this cacao bean... or something as complex as eating a turkey that eats bugs that eats fruits. Itâs the cycle of my life my friend. And the further down the line something is, the less it is something. Meaning everything along the way takes and burns some of that energy and nutrient. This is why most processed meats are worthless for nutrients but seeds are the richest of all.
Tonyisgaming technically, many foods do not come from fruits. Stop spewing bullshit.

Oof.

When did you see a alien egg lol

Emmy PLEASE try out one of my childhood fruits. It's called a guaba (with a b, not a v). It's a very long woody flat fruit that's filled with something similar to what you saw and tasted in the cacao fruit. I think they might be related. You crack it open by twisting it. The white part is super super smooth and fluffy, until you put it in your mouth and it becomes this sweet, juicy thing that's just delicious. It's much sweeter and smoother than the cacao fruit. The seeds are large and pitch black, and in my childhood in the Caribbean we used to use those to play made up games or asked adults to poke holes in them to make jewelry with string.
Also known as "ice cream bean". The pulp around the seeds is more dry, like cotton candy than it would be compared to the pulp around the cacao seeds. "Inga edulis" is the scientific name. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inga_edulis
Is this like tonka bean?
@@melsaunder9251 no, it's not a tonka bean. The one I'm talking about is indeed ice cream bean or Inga edulis - it's a very long fruit, I've seen some that are almost 1 meter (3ft) long. Super soft white pulp and funny black seeds inside.
@@cecilelebleu5984 can you eat the encased black bean like with cacao ? Or is it just the creamy pulp your after?
@@melsaunder9251 only the pulp! It's fuzzy and fluffy and melts in your mouth. The seeds are hard when fresh, you can make a hole with a needle or mark them with your nails, and if left to dry, they becomes much harder. The seeds are very shiny and very black, like a polished black rock.

@@TonyisToking makes too much sense
Tonyisgaming Get over it, itâs just a proverb.
And it is quite tasty.
Hi emmy! I was born in Ilhéus, which is a city in the northeastern part of Brazil famous for their cacao farms and chocolate production decades ago. In my grandmothers house she had a cacao tree in the backyard (as many people did back in the day at our city) and we used to eat the frui all the time! She even made home made chocolate scratch from it!
If you ever have the chance, try tasting cacao juice! Itâs made from that membrane surrounding the bean and it is delicious!
Emmy is the Steve Erwin of fruit. Sees the beauty and amazement in what she works with and itâs completely wonderful. Love how educational she is! So glad I found this channel!
Excited to see the next part in making chocolate. I'm craving fruit now
The beans** almost look like cloves of garlic
I thought this also
But the taste not bad though
Do you mean the beans? The pod would be the outer husk
I don't know what kind of garlic you use.
@@Elubial the kind that grows in bulbs. What I meant about the appearance was how each bean was surrounded by the membrane, and how close they were together looks like the cloves of garlic, in my opinion. If you don't agree, you don't need to even get involved honestly..
I love how calm and family friendly she isđ
I love that you'll just throw any random thing into your mouth so that we don't have to. And then describe it so well!
According to the bon apetite "its alive" episode where they talk about chocolate the beans should ferment for 3 days to get the correct flavor
I'm really looking forward to the video of the whole process. Making chocolate from scratch has always seemed like a massive production to me so it'll be fascinating to see you do it at home. Go long!
i've eaten so many of these growing up. tastes AWESOME!!! sweet and sour at the same time!!! i'm from the Caribbean and we have them on my island. we use it to make cocoa sticks, which we then use to make cocoa tea. we usually dry the beans in the sun for a few days and then roast to remove the skin. after which the beans are grinded down into a powder; (can get messy according to the fat content of the beans). powdered cinnamon, nutmeg, bay leaves are added to the cocoa powder and rolled into sticks. the sticks are then air dried and stored in the fridge as heat tends to melt the sticks due to fat content. to make the cocoa tea, just add some water, cinnamon and or bay leaves, nutmeg and a cocoa stick to a pan and bring to boil. leave until the cocoa stick is melted. then add some more water and then milk. sweeten to your taste. for added texture some regular flour is mixed with a little water and added to the cocoa tea. remove from heat when tea starts to thicken. you can add as much flour as you like!! i personally like it on the thick side. hope u get to make this one. i totally love it!!!! as for measurements, i don't have as we never measured anything when making this lol. some like it strong, whereas others don't like it as strong
That is so fascinating! I would really love to try this, but I'm afraid I'd totally screw it up so I would want someone to make it authentically first.
I'm always afraid to try making new recipes on my own (because as I said above, I know I would mess it up big time!) Lol
But thank you for sharing this, Carla!!! I love learning about other cultures and their food!!!
I love that! Remind me of my childhood when we have a cacao tree in our backyard and we eat tons of that during its bearing season. Yummy.
My family has many farms with only coocnut and other trees in it and I plan to plant Cacaos in them and produce chocolate locally.
