  • Until very recently, having discrete slots in radios was a way to add features. This was most often seen in the form of mechanical filters, but there are other, more esoteric cards that were made. Some are still available today. Today we install a Yaesu SU-1 modules into the VX-6 to unlock a barometer and altimeter. Would this be useful in a submersible outdoor handheld? I think so.

Something you might consider, calibration, I took mine to a local airport and calibrated the elevation to the surveyed elevation of the landing pad. Once done baro and msl have remained exact for ten years or more. VX-5r with the SU-1.

@@w8umannarbor612 You should be able to find that info in the owner's manual of operations. That is where I learned how to do it, but remember, find an accurate surveyed elevation mark, such as an Airport run up pad or Surveyor's reference mark.

My experience with SU-1 is that it is much more accurate than GPS altitude. But there is one quirk to lookout for: The battery assembly is gasketed to keep water out and would affect the pressure sensor. Take an altitude measurement and then pop the battery off and on. Retake the measurement and it would be different.

I have an older VXA-710 (pre Yaesu, Vertex Standard) submersible aviation radio. This radio has the identical expansion slot. The barometer/altitude feature would add to the avionics back-up capability of this radio. 👍

I have the IC-91A that I purchased at a hamfest. I think it had the original box with the d-star logo on it. I was new to the ham world, and thought I had a radio that did d-star. I soon found out that if I wanted d-star I had to purchase a plug-in module. Luckily, they still sold them, HRO I think. The IC-91A had a metal access plate with two screws. Booted the radio after install, and it had a visual prompt, indicating a successful install. And voila, I had d-star. The module was about $100. It was so fun making this radio do something it couldn't do originally. Thanks for the video! I got to relive the experience.

Greetings! I have the VX-5 and I saw years ago when I bought it they had the SU-1 plug-in listed, never really saw a use for it since barometric pressures are changing and I did not know if there was a calibration setting for it. As for the Kenwood Video microphone, bought one at Dayton years ago when a dealer from Canada was liquidating his stock of them. It is low resolution/potato vision camera that is capable of transmitting on several SSTV modes. It will work on FM as well as HF sideband if one makes a microphone adapter for it. What I have found that in a grid down situation you can relay photos to a command center within a minute so they can assess situations. There was also a DOS disk program that allowed one to offload the phots from the unit. It can hold 10 photos and you can program your call on the overlay. Kenwood even made a commercial version of this but could only hold 9 photos. Don’t know what other differences there were between the two models as a Kenwood shop at the time we had no customer interest in this version.
This was a good video and it’s too bad that Yaesu has not made a plug in Bluetooth module for these three radios using the SU1.

The VX-6R unfortunately can't do much with that display. But still cool! The VX-5R and 7R have nice display and actually shows you barometric trend's over time, if im not mistaken. This allows you to see if the weather is going better or worse (not scientifically, but accurately enough). It's like a Casio Pathfinder in a way. The PRW-2500 (and other models) have a little window on the left of its face to show barometric tendencies of the last 10 hours displayed at all times.

I don't think having a big open motherboard access slot in the battery bay on a submersible radio is a bad thing... - I expect that there is a gasket around the battery bay so the battery terminals don't short by default so anything in that bay would be gasketed up to particular depths/pressure for at least fresh water ingress.
