    The Tokyo based Hungarian clarinetist István KOHÁN is one of the most exciting wind instrumental soloist of today.
    Kohán launched his career in 2013 when he won the 1st prize and audience prize at the 11th Tokyo Music Competition, Japan. In 2015 he won 1st prize and audience prize at Japan’s most prestigious music contest the 84th Japanese Music Competition. The same year he won 1st prize and audience prize at Japan Woodwind Competition, 1st prize and Grand Prix at Akiyoshidai Music competition. Through the years he won 24 prizes at 15 competitions.
    In 2013 he won the Junior Prima Award (Music Division). The "The Clarinet" magazine wrote about him as “The new hero of the clarinet world”.
    In 2017 got the Aoyama Music Award.
    He has been invited to music festivals as Tokyo Spring Festival, Budapest Spring Festival, KaposFest, La Folle Journée au Japon, Suntory Hall’s Chamber Music Garden.
    Playing together with artists like Peter Frankl, Víkingur Ólafsson, Julien Quentin, Kristóf Baráti, Akiko Nakajima, Michael Collins, Mathieu Dufour, István Várdai, the Kodály String Quartet, Reiko Watanabe, Ensemble Raro, the Budapest Strings,Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kioi Sinfonietta with conductors as Antonio Mendez, Ken-David Masur, Kazuki Sawa, Toshiaki Umeda, Masahiko Enkoji, Shigeo Genda and many others from. Performed several prestigious concert halls from Tokyo to New York.
    In addition to his concerts and activities he is teaching as a lecturer at Tokyo College of Music. He created his own teaching system called “Kohán Method” what is helping young musicians to develop on their instruments in good mental health and confidence by understanding the deep mechanism of making music.
    Mr. KOHÁN composes as well.
    He keenly expands the existing clarinet repertoire by writing new pieces what usually inspired by his musical roots. He grew up by listening his father’s playing who is an outstanding klezmer clarinetist (Budapest Klezmer Band) so this genre is like a native language for him. The characteristic and world famous Hungarian folk music is also a strongly inspirational source for his works.
    In his concerts he plays his own compositions and arrangements too and also improvises.
    Mr. KOHÁN plays on Backun clarinets. This collaboration with the Canadian company let him to reach higher levels in his musicality with the best quality of instruments.

    ハンガリー出身のクラリネット・ソリスト。音楽一家に生まれ、父の手ほどきでクラリネットを始める。12歳でバルトーク音楽院(高等学校)英才教育コースに入学すると、J.リヒテルクラ リネットコンクール第1位、カルリーノ国際音楽コンクール 第1位、アントンエベルスト国際クラリネットコンクール第 1位、ICA国際クラリネットコンクール第1位など、ハンガ リー在住中より多くの国際コンクールで優勝・入賞する快挙 を成し遂げる。リスト音楽院卒業後の2013年7月に活動拠点 を日本に移した。2013年第11回東京音楽コンクール第1位 及び聴衆賞受賞。ハンガリー芸術賞「ジュニア・プリマ・ア ワード」受賞。2015年第4回秋吉台音楽コンクール第1位 及び山口県知事賞受賞。第26回日本木管コンクール第1位及 びコスモス賞、兵庫県知事賞、朝日新聞社賞、神戸新聞賞を 受賞。第84回日本音楽コンクール第1位及び岩谷賞(聴衆賞)、E.ナカミチ賞を受賞。2016年東京音楽大学大学院修 了。2017年第26回青山音楽賞受賞。これまでに新日本フィ ルハーモニー交響楽団(アントニオ・メンデス)、東京フィルハーモニー交響楽団(梅田 俊明・円光寺 雅彦・渡邊一正)、紀尾井シンフォニエッタ(澤 和樹)、ジュールフィル ハーモニー交響楽団(ハンガリー:カールマン・ベルケ シュ)、東京音楽大学シンフォニーオーケストラ(現田 茂夫)とコンチェルトを協演、またソロリサイタル や室内楽の活動を展開する他、2014年からは作曲家としても活動の幅を広げる。現在、東京音楽大学講師。

    Do you know anything about the piece? I can't find any program notes or information about the folk songs that inspired it?

      +Jessica Pollack This piece is fictional only. This pieces are not based on original folk songs, only written in the style of hungarian folk music. But lovely, isn't it? :)
