I’ve worked as a main dealer tech with VW & Audi since 1997. The Rallye was rare even then, in fact I only worked on 1… it was during a time when VW & Audi were making really special things, G40 Polo’s, Audi/Porsche RS2’s, Mk3 Golf colour concept GTI’s, harlequin’s & The Corrado, the list is almost endless & I’m glad I started my career when I did… nothing is special anymore, modern cars are soulless with no character… love your videos Jonny, thank you 😊

The 16v G60 Limited was the most powerful VW made up until the R32, there were 71, and most went to vw personnel.
Built on 5 door body shells they were all black I believe, ran small bumpers and had signature blue stripe on the grille (and an offset VW Motorsport emblem)

That’s awesome, looks to be in rather good nick too, interior looks almost brand new. The German temporary plates expired in 2001 (06/07/01 to be exact as the plates say), so it must’ve basically sat for 20 years. Coincidentally I think 2001 was the last time those wheels looked cool!

Epic find, Jonny. Always loved Rallye Golfs. I think the red Mk2 you showed (pictured at your show) is a regular G60. The G60 Limited was a bit of a sleeper: five-door shell, small bumpers, single headlight grille with a black VW roundel and a nice little Volkswagen Motorsport badge with matching pinstripe. I believe the earlier ones were finished in metallic graphite grey and the later ones in metallic black. I seem to recall they with came with BBS RM split-rims. Last time I saw one for sale it was going for about £60,000. A lot of money but worth it IMO.

Jonny, great channel and I look forward to each instalment. Just to help you with your Mk2 Golf nomenclature: “Golf G60” (LHD FWD, not officially imported to the UK, and the red car you had at your event), “Golf Rallye” (as depicted in your video, it’s not a G60 Rallye), and finally the “Golf G60 Limited” (5 door shell, synchro, all Schwartz metallic, LHD, 70 built, 16v G60 motor). I hope I recall the details after a 30 year hiatus.

Had a Mark 2 Golf GTI in Tornado Red from new in 1986 (replaced a Polar White Astra GTE that was written off). Absolutely loved it - it just felt so solid and so much feedback driving it compared to the Astra. Sold it to my brother in law after a couple of years and got a new 205Gti. That rattled more after just 4 weeks than the Golf ever did. One car that I wished I could have kept - happy memories. Loved the G60 Rallye at the time but financial circumstances meant it was way out of my league. Think that the grey really suits the muscular shape of the car. Just a shame about the wheels......

The handling was erratic, huge lift off understeer mixed with the odd bit of snap oversteer as the chassis was too flexible. I fitted 6 point cages and strut tie bars to mine to solve the issue. Huge fun.

Nice find. As a bit of info, the German plate on that car is used for driving vehicles that are being exported / moved whilst no longer being registered. It was exported from Göppingen in Germany sometime in July 2001. After the 06.07.2001 that number plate was no longer legal.

    • @davidvolker4647
      @davidvolker4647 Před 2 lety +1

Thank you, was about to comment on that topic, too. Actually this licence plate was a Temporary registration valid for a maximum of 5 days. Usually these are only used for transport within Germany. Should have used an export plate, which is for driving the car into another country without being re-registered in Germany.
So the car is stored there for about 21 years now.

Living on Sarajevo for a few years, I sometimes spent Sunday mornings between 2000 and 2002 at a huge car market. Much of the stock was "liberated" from Zurich, Munich and elsewhere. It was a sort of Brick Lane on acid.
The MkII Golf had a hero status on Bosnia; they had been built for quite a few years for the domestic market at a plant just outside Sarajevo.
    But I digress .....
Among many funky cars of dubious origin at the car market (Autopijaca) one would see the odd Golf Country and VERY occasionally a G60 or even a Golf Rallye.
It was a lucky dip for the brave back then. If you knew someone who could "help" with registration, the world was your oyster.
I drove a 1986 Jetta GLi that seemed never to need an MoT (Tehnički Pregled). I just sent the papers off and they came back stamped. But I was never quite brave enough to bargain for a fancy blown Golf or a 405 T-16x4 or any of that fancy stuff. And it was all there if you were brave.

Seeing that Mk2 so dirty make me almost cry with anger.
Happy that Jonny cleaned it though

@@TheLateBrakeShow totally fine mate. As long as you have working abs or that system can be a mare to get right. Superchargers are a bit of a grenade if miss treated or regular red lined. Obviously parts are expensive too. 😉

I was offered a deal on one of these in the early 2000’s. My ‘96 Volvo 850 GLT Estate + £1000!! Knocked it back as I was doing a lot of miles at the time. Crystal ball and a warehouse would have been useful!

  • @Rust_valley_adventures

I owned a dragon Green rallye for a week and sold it,they built like a tank but they slow and heavy and don't go around corners that good considering they 4 wheel drive , sold it bought a 91 bright metallic blue mk2 gti which had been converted to g60 and then spent a fortune on it and it made a healthy 285 bhp at the wheels after the rebuild and I loved that car for years until I had kids and sold it ! My old g60 is still alive and is in Ireland, The private plates G8DUB and G7DUB I owned were sold and are on local cars now and they worth a small fortune lol #hindsight

  • @paulbradford8240

They were rare when they came out. Only 5000 made for homogolation. I wanted one so much in the 90's and there were plenty for sale at the time across Europe. I could have got one for £7000, but it was a struggle to raise the money.
I also was a little concerned about driving a left hand drive vehicle in the UK. How daft was I? We have lived in France for sixteen years and have left and right hand drive cars here and have often driven lhd in the UK. I imagine there can't be too many of them left on the road now, but they go for a lot of money. A fabulous car.

Wow, it’s held up really well for it’s age. The OEM+ Big wheel ‘Brit look’ was so popular and of it’s time 20(+) years ago but has aged well I think. As a big VW/Audi fan I’d consider the Rallye as the Holy Grail, definite lottery car. I laughed when he said his son wouldn’t sell, totally understandable. Thank you for showing this. ❤️

Back in the 80s everyone was chopping in their Mk2 Golf GTi for a Rallye. I couldn’t afford one but I got offered a Golf G60 at a good price. This was the 2wd version and looked much more like a GTi. So was less popular. But it was superb and even my wife loved it despite it being LHD.
