As a former automotive journalist I totally agree. Your observation is exact. Most CZcamsrs or even car journalists on car websites produce most of their content from their desktop.
Johnny is actually out there creating stories, something that has become rearer and rearer as the magazines have faded out of the picture and the channeling of advertising money has changed because of the internet.

Some clarification about the Penta wheels. There were several companies that made wheels in that style but only one company was called Penta, and they were based in the UK. Their wheels were called "Penta P1680/P1690" (80 = 8j, 90= 9j wide). The German wheels were made by ATS and were called "ATS AMG 5 Spokes". I've spent ages on forums trying to figure out who made them first, some people say that AMG asked Penta to make wheels due to increased demand, others said Penta copied the design on the Mercedes C111 prototype and that AMG asked ATS to make a version based on those. Either way, everyone started refering to all these different wheels as Pentas despite only the British ones having that name. The only difference between the two is that the spokes on the AMG wheels are slightly shorter with a thicker lip than the Pentas. Like I said, several other companies made versions of these wheels but people generally agree that the ones to have are either the genuine AMG wheels or the British made wheels that are actually called Pentas.

I was born not too far from the North Pole, and it can get very cold there, especially earlier. There had been a long cold spell, with below -40 for over a fortnight, then forty years ago. I was going to pick up a Volvo 343, yes, one with a CVT gearbox, and drive it 120 miles. But how to start it. No engine heater, nothing. I turned off everything that could possibly use electricity before trying. Started after the third attempt. No problem, and none of today's electric cars would have been able to do it. It's always exciting to start cars in the cold, or that haven't been driven for a very long time, that's why it's so exciting to see this series, if you get a start.

I dont know what it is but that first glimmer of hope when it fires for a split second gives me a great feeling of releif its weird brings back very old memories of my early cars especially my old 1973 beetle when they just run on the starter no fire its the most horrible feeling but just when you hear that little crack of a cylinder firing it just makes you relax and then the build up of an actual full fire up it like a huge weight off your shoulders just hearing it, loving all the barn finds its almost like meditation for me so thanks for bringing back these memories it makes me want to go and dig out my Chenowth (beetle based sandrail ) which infact i have never heard run and i have had it in a garage for over 20 years now, carbs where taken off a long time ago and i have another set as well but these videos just inspire me to just go and have a tinker and see if i can get it running! I am amazed that this BMW ran on 20 year old fuel i always thought there was an expiry on fuel but obviously not!

I later had to sell that car to pay for a move but I since purchased an 81 (E12 based) 633Csi and although the 635 was certainly more lively I prefer the simplicity and style of the early car. It bridges the gap to the E9 quite well actually. You can see a couple of shorts with my E24 on my channel.

Had a couple of 635s back in the day. Engines pretty much bombproof but rust was the issue. Some electrical gremlins.
This was the age of BMW that gave them their good reputation.

The supercar of that era, was the Alpina B7 (1978-1982) with a turbo and 300 hp from the 630 engine. Later it got 330 hp from the 635. 0-62 mph in 6.8.

I was bitten twice by the BMW bug. I was in Pretoria Technikon in 2002, South Africa, and i lived in Res. There was a man who lived near the Res and he drove a black E28 M5 with a cream interior. It looked good and sounded great, he took care of it. On the way to town, from the Res, there was a scrapyard that had yellow 635 CSi and I was enthralled since then. It's been my dream to own either one... or both.

Hey DIY mechanics, don't hit brake calipers with a steel hammer, because you can easily deform the piston bore and permanently seize the caliper. Instead hit on a piece of wood to protect the caliper.

Old fuel works much better than you’re led to believe. I’ve been away & I’d fuelled my 1977 bikes up before leaving & putting into storage. 15 months later, fuel turned onto prime, kicked it over and started & ran perfectly, idling down off choke as if ridden yesterday, not 2021.

I always wanted a 635csi ( my dads mate used to race them when new). Sadly I only ever managed a 628 csi - still love how these cars look they make most current bmw models look like a design disaster! So glad this one didn’t have those naff 90’s chrome wheel arch covers - a sure sign of being mistreated .

I wish Jonny would do a return to the cars he doesn’t get started when they are eventually running where possible so we can see them in running order also you could try tracing the new owners if there sold or go back to the original owners if they keep it when they are restored so we can see them in all there glory especially the Audi qautro but I understand you did do this with the escort that had done 900 miles from new and was sat with the lady who owned it as she took it over 1000 miles I watched that and it was a brilliant edition of the late brake show. Also I wish this could go on main steam tv and you make a Tv series out of it but otherwise keep doing what you do as I absolutely love it as it’s a welcome release from my terminal cancer as it takes my mind of it just for a short while so thanks Jonny ❤️

Dream car BMW 635 CSI. I was posted to Germany in 1980. Couldn't afford the 6 but saved for the 323i. LINCOLN BMW allowed me to sit in a BMW 635 CSI in the same colour as the barn find car.
In the showroom at Rheindahlen , the BMW salesman was so derogatory to me that I walked across the floor to the Audi stand and bought the showroom model. Audi 80 GLE in triple blue. Electric Ariel , alloy wheels, 2 rear fogs, tinted glass all round and 1000 DM worth of sound system. Price 18000 DM = £4050. Beautiful car. Long range 5th gear . 50MPG. Happy days.
The BMW 323i base cost was around 23000DM.
