I just realized that turf wars are really messed up because it's a bit of a reanimated version of a actual conflict in the Splatoon universe, and they decide to make it a sport.
It's the equivalent of having a sport where a bunch of Children get a bunch of paintball guns and plastic knifes and have them all dig opposing trenches and shoot at each other and launch water balloon artillery at the other side and have them throw stinkbombs for gas attacks
