But very willing to change when presented with arguments, very brave and honest. The "Red flag" for prince Phillip is pretty ridiculous too, considering the kiss is a requirement for taking of the spell. And the fact, that they were pretty much a couple by then anyway.

    David should've been higher on this list. It is not very common to see a guy as supportive as David is to Nani, especially not in animated form. His personality is very down-to-Earth and he has an air of quiet-confidence (when someone has lots of self-confidence but doesn't brag about it). Eric is more of a lover than a fighter, and the fact that he fell head-over-heals for Ariel proves it. Besides, he did initially suspect that Ariel was the girl who saved him, he just didn't factor in the possibility that she's a mermaid that had her voice stolen by a crazy seawitch. Plus even though her being mute threw him off a little, he still treated her with kindness and grace and he grew to like her more for her personality than from hearing her singing voice, which Ursula used to bewitch him with. Kinda flips the switch on the "love at first sight" trope.

      Eric, while I thought he was bland before, I am convinced that while he isn't with a lot of depth compared to Eugene and Naveen, he sets standards for what you want in a boyfriend. He's compassionate, brave, he can work on a boat like any sailor, and he looks out for the people around him ( he tries to save his dog from a burning ship and saved his butler from drowning). Plus he is respectful, when he meet Ariel when she was mute and wrapped in nothing but a sheet, he looked at her in the face

    • @cajayson8301
      @cajayson8301 Před rokem +13

      it could be due to his transformation and that his Beast character suppressed those amiable qualities of his which flourished in the second half. He didn't get cursed for no reason. He was still keeping Belle captive.
      When Thomas asked Duchess why she wanted to go back and she said she liked her life and that the Madame needed them, he helped them find their way. Though he obviously wanted Duchess and the kittens to stay with him on the streets he (much like Naveen) was willing to let go of that potential relationship in order to help them be happy. It just feels like he actually respects his romantic interest.

    Princess and the Frog is an underrated movie. In my opinion, it has one of the best written love stories in a Disney movie and has some very interesting characters. Charlotte Labeouf, for example, is probably one of the best Disney besties. Can we stop with the whole "Phillip kissing Aurora without consent is a red flag" argument? She was cursed to sleep forever with the only way to break it being "True love's kiss." He is literally only doing it to save her life. And he has the consent of her guardians as guardianship has not yet passed from the fairies back to her parents. What was he supposed to do, say "nah, I don't have her consent." and leave her and the rest of the kingdom to sleep for the rest of eternity? Now if Disney had kept true to the original story regarding how she wakes up, then yeah, there'd be a real problem with that, but it's literally one short kiss, with consent from her guardians, in order to save her life.

      Oh yeah the real story is messed up, but with Disney's Maleficent literally mocked him by telling him he was the only one who could save Aurora and that she'd let him free when he was an old man. Someone on here likened him kissing Aurora while she was asleep to needing someone's consent before performing CPR. He was saving her life so consent was not needed.

      also, he was her fiance, from childhood. so he definitely knew about the curse since he was there and all and the whole kingdom knows it isn't a well-kept secret. he knew what he had to do so did everyone else. it was basically CPR if you get what I mean. sure it was supposed to be romantic but it was to save her.
      and in the live-action (maleficent) he constantly asked the 3 fairies if he was doing the right thing and that he barely knew her and tried his best to stop the kiss since he didn't know the full story.
      it is true we don't get a lot of screen time for him in the original, but he was still a good character, and in live-action, he won our hearts, especially in the second movie where he was by Aurora's side no matter what.

    In defense of Prince Adam/The Beast, he ACTUALLY did change for the better over the course of their movie. He was just like Gaston at the start, a handsome but arrogant jerk whose entitlement knew no bounds because of the constant coddling from those around them. Unlike Gaston, Adam actually paid a heavy price for his bad attitude early on with the enchantment. Belle was the first person to stand-up to him, show what genuine selflessness looked like, and treat him as a person rather than a superior or monster. Their time together helped him remember what it was to be truly human. He in turn acted selflessly when he pushed Belle into returning to her father's side instead of pleading with her to stay. He chose to spare Gaston's life, even after he broke into his home & made an attempt on his life. Even when he laid dying, his thoughts were on comforting Belle and cherishing the small mercy of being able to see her one last time.
    TLDR: Adam is a good character & love interest & this list did him dirty 😜

    20: Florian was going to have a bigger role, but the animators back in 1937 struggled with getting him right and only made two scenes with him in them.
    19: Again, animators struggled with their prince characters for a long time, and finding her through the shoe was the king's idea, wasn't it?
    18: John was only being a typical man of his time, but he was at least willing to listen to Pocahontas and learn stuff.

    13: The same thing goes for Tramp (and there's a sequel, that proves that he did indeed stay with Lady and their puppies).
    12: But he was under a spell and was losing his humanity when Belle first met him, so we shouldn't put too much real-life logic into this.

    Captain Phoebus is missing, and he deserves a good spot. My dude went from hot and dumb law enforcer who does what he's told - "I'm just doing my job" - to a charismatic leader who risks his life for the gypsies and leading the riot of the Parisian people against oppression.
    What's even greater is that this change does not come because he is into Esmeralda, but from within : he slowly starts to realize that the orders from Frollo are crap, and goes from discretely telling Esmeralda to ask for sanctuary to openly disobeying Frollo's direct orders when he asks for him to burn the miller's family alive, saving them, and then accepts death from his insubordination.
    He's also the only character who loves Esmeralda for who she is, not for her looks.

    • @JD10503
      @JD10503 Před rokem +2

      I think her looks play a part, but he sees beyond them. Quasimodo sees her character, Frollo is fixated on her beauty, but Phoebus sees and loves her for both.

    • @matariki9818
      @matariki9818 Před rokem +2

      @@JD10503 yeah I should have expressed myself better. In the song Heaven's Light / Hellfire, those two points of view are quite clearly explicited : Quasi sees Esmeralda as "an angel" who "smiles at him", and he is smittened with her. Frollo, instead, calls her "a witch" who belongs in hell, and speaks of his "burning desire turning him to sin". Phoebus does none of these things (and notably, he does not sing about her !). You're right her looks definitely plays a part, and so did her character.
      Phoebus sees her as a human being, likes her for who she is, and falls for her in a very human way, whereas Quasi sees her as an angel and Frollo as the devil. It's a realistic and better love story.

      I never see him as portrayed as dumb. Sure, he's not Frollo level intelligent, but he's still not dumb. He's somewhat knowledgeable in languages and is able to prevent Frollo from abducting Esmerelda shortly after meeting her, not to mention the fact that he is quite perceptive, showing this trait at least three times.

    It wasn't Eric's fault he didn't recognize Ariel by anything other than her voice. He couldn't see her face after she rescued him because of the sun he could only hear her singing. Same with Prince Charming Cinderella never told him her name and ran off with only the glass slipper as a clue that he gave to his footman to use to find her. I also think this harping on not getting consent in sleeping beauty is ridiculous. The woman in unconscious and literally needs the kiss to save her and the kingdom from eternal sleep. Harping about consent in this case is the equivalent of requiring consent from an unconscious victim to perform life saving CPR.

      Yeah the descriptions of these characters was ridiculous. Also if you count Prince Charming from Cinderella 3:A Twist in Time he's a great prince. I always loved Lady and the Tramp much more than the Aristocats.

    Ah Flynn Rider...A great character I genuinely love that Disney unnecessarily ruined by making him WAY too old.
    Seriously. There was no fucking reason why he had to be 26. That actually makes the whole relationship icky because Rapunzel is a child, and her turning 18 partway through the film doesn't magically make things better in that regard due to her upbringing and lack of really any relationship skills. I'm legit angry that Disney did this because this was so easily avoidable as an issue. Literally just make him about 20 and this issue goes away.
