    Parnell I am so glad you are doing commercial work for the AE10. Your different videos, especially those for 2.0 and later, and on the accessories (like this video) are the reason I purchased one of these, and I have no regrets. I hope you continue in the online informational loop, ALL of your presentations have helped.

    After viewing this excellent demonstration, I immediately went out and purchased the new mouthpiece! Yes! It is a major improvement. With the old mouthpiece, I could never figure out how to get a natural vibrato going. I was forced to choose between having pitch-bend or having the automatic vibrato. I had been really hoping that Roland would come up with a firmware update to solve this and have it respond more naturally. But as it turned out, the solution instead was the new mouthpiece. Now I can easily obtain a natural vibrato, as well as an easier time with the pitch bend as well! I still need to play with it more to really get used to the new feel in a full playing context. But already, right of the bat, this is new mouthpiece is really paying off. Thank you so much for calling my attention to this new product, as well as the outstanding demonstrations!

      Hi Steffen, thanks for your helpful comment about the improved Roland Aerophone OP-AE10MPH mouthpiece reed. It is a year later and I would love to get your feedback after using it for some time.
      Can you tell me, with the hard reed, if you are able to precisely control the depth of the pitch bend and vibrato? To clarify, with both my acoustic reed, and my EWI4000s bite sensor, I can smoothly and naturally achieve 8% or 64% or 92%. In other words it is not an on/off feel, but a matter of pressure. Do you get the same depth variation control? Thanks!

    That was a very helpful demo of the new mouthpiece. I just ordered an Aerophone AE-10, estimated to be delivered in early May. I hope it will have this newer version mouthpiece. I am watching every one of your videos on the Aerophone. There is so much good, useful info in each one. I will be SO ready for that delivery. Thank you.

    Just love these videos being delivered here, Allistair is doing a great job here for us novices out there. I wonder if it would be possible to cover in depth video's on the use of the App? some of us don't know the terms in the App means which makes it difficult to tweak the app according to how we would like it.

    I think this will make a difference for me as I have been struggling a bit with the bite adjustment to feel right. A part of this also has to do from coming from the EWI mouthpiece setup along with finger positions and acclimating from the octave rollers to switches. Thanks for another helpful video.

      Daniel, thanks for your helpful comment about the improved Roland Aerophone OP-AE10MPH, especially your perspective coming from the EWI bite sensor. A year later, can you tell me if you are able to get the vibrato depth control with the Aerophone hard reed to the same level as you can with your EWI? Specifically, with my EWI4000s and can apply any amount of pressure and easily control the depth of the bend. But I have read that with the old mouth piece, the Aerophone was essentially on/off with not much control. Your input will be helpful for me to decide what to buy for my niece. Thanks!

    We just got these stiffer reed mouthpieces in stock here in the USA at Patchman Music. I strongly recommend getting this mouthpiece over the original paper-thin reed type. All the new AE-10 units we are now selling already have been upgraded with this mouthpiece installed and tested here. More info is here... www.patchmanmusic.com/roland.html

It really does make for a nice improvement in bite response- especially when coupled with the latest firmware update. More info on the Aerophone is here: www.patchmanmusic.com/roland.html

    I would bet that not having the thin reed cracked would make a difference too. I got my Aerophone used and discovered that the reed had a crack 3/4 of the width of the reed covered by the fastening block. I have the two new mouthpieces on order but there is llittle I can do settings-wise until they come in. Going to drill through Bari Sop sax reed and see if I can at least mount that until they come in.

    With the harder reed, it looks like you're able to effect the sound more with the throat position in addition to the lip/embochure. Is that true? If so, thats much more saxophone like!

    • @isax.academy
      @isax.academy  Před 6 lety

      I really don’t think the throat makes any difference on the Aerophone although I guess it must affect air speed, but on a Sax of course you can affect pitch with the throat and sound to some extent. For the Aerophone to work the same way it would have to constantly scan your oral cavity.
      That’s would be cool.

      I got my new Aerophone AE10 a few days ago (April 26 2019). Mine came with a hard reed and Ver 3.00 so I was good to go straight out of the box. The bite sensor isn't working. I saw Alistair's tutorial about setting it up and It's not functioning at all and I would expect it to function like my Yamaha WX-5 since it looks like it is the same "floating cantilever" set up as the Yamaha. So I am not going to mess with it any further until I call Roland tech support. If tech support tells me to gently bend the cantilever so it touches the reed, and I break the sensor, I want to be on the phone with them when that happens. LOL

    Do you think a mouthpiece that uses traditional non-digital reeds might work with the AEROPHONE ?

  • @brentinjapan
    @brentinjapan Před 4 lety +1

    Anyone find the reed way too hard to keep at pitch? I'd played sax before and there's no way I needed to bite that hard just to keep a pitch. It's crazy. And it changes for some notes. Like I bite down (hard) and play a D major scale and everything is fine until I get to the open C# and although all the other notes up to that point were fine (only due to my concentrated effort) the C# is almost impossible to keep in tune. I have to bite it with my teeth to get it to stay in tune. This is too much work - sax used to be fun! LOL I have to turn the bite control off to enjoy it.

    • @brentinjapan
      @brentinjapan Před 3 lety

      @Lennart Odeberg I wrote here thinking that someone would tell me that my problem is odd and maybe I'd received a defective one. Alas, no replies.
      Anyway, yeah, I have to turn bite control off. I can put it on for about 3 minutes and then I'm done. I used to play sax. It wasn't this hard and a medium embouchure was used. You could bend up or down by tightening or loosening. I understand the Aerophone isn't exactly like a sax but it shouldn't be this hard. .

    I bought my Ae10 about a month ago, having watched all your videos and comparing AE10 and EWI. I would really appreciate a detailed video on correct articulation (with the new hard reed). I have experimented with various tongue positions to try to achieve a clean, sharp articulation. The problem is that most come out as a soft 'th', rather than a sharp 'dh'. I find that the best is to block the wide gap completely between reed and mouthpiece with the tongue and use an 'explosive' burst of air. What are your thoughts please - or anyone else's?

    • @isax.academy
      @isax.academy  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi.
      I think there are two issues here.
      One is we all do slightly different things with our tongue when articulating and second I think there is some inconsistency with how the Aerophone responds, particularly with fast repetitions. Of source the reed isn’t doing anything to affect articulations here, it’s purely airflow.
      Personally I don’t try to block the gap between the reed and mouthpiece but use my tongue on the roof of my mouth a bit like a flute player would do.
      Just to clarify- this is.NOT how it should be done on an acoustic sax.
      It might be worth thinking very carefully about precisely what your tongue is doing. Very often I think we don’t realise what is happening.
      Good idea for a video but the overwhelming problem here is we need an MRI scanner to show what’s happening inside the mouth as we tongue. 😕

    • @paulholden6952
      @paulholden6952 Před 6 lety

      Thanks for quick reply Alistair. I already play acoustic sax and clarinet and have been struggling to replicate their articulation techniques on the AE-10. I'll try your roof of mouth technique now. One other thing. It's easy to bend pitch down. But I can only bend pitch up above my default in-tune pressure using the thumb. Is this your technique?

      +Kieren Moore There are some things that you can only learn on a real sax. In terms of fingering the Aerophone is a great practice tool.

    • @isax.academy
      @isax.academy  Před 9 měsíci

      You can certainly set the Aerophone up to play fine with no bite pressure at all. As long as you can make a reasonable seal around the mouthpiece it will work.
      You might have to work on the settings if you want to achieve lip pitch bend and vibrato but it’s totally doable.

      @TooSlowTube Před 5 lety

      Thanks, Alistair. That's good to know. Maybe I'll try to make my own reed, if I don't see one to buy soon.
      I think the problem with the original reed is that it flexes so much that the response depends on how far your lip is from the end of the lever - either further out, or further in makes the reed bend so there's less deflection. Unfortunately, it's quite hard to judge that.

    • @TooSlowTube
      @TooSlowTube Před 5 lety

      I imported one from Thomann, in the end. It's definitely better.
      It feels more like the Yamaha WX5 reed now - except the Aerophone can still only bend the pitch down, not up, due to some arbitrary decision made by Roland.
