As a person that grew up in Cherokee, I would like to say I'm not sure what everyone expects when they come to the reservation. I feel like if you're expecting for the locals to bend over backwards to make you feel welcome and entertain you well sorry you have come to the wrong place. We are not a theme park. Neither is our culture we do not owe you or anyone else anything so if you do not like visiting Cherokee, then please feel free to not stop. We have shops there that sell authentic Native American made items, but a lot of people complain about how much they cost so that's why there's not very many and yes to make some extra money some of the shops sell things that are not handmade. Apparently, this is a horrible crime to make money in the United States. Go figure maybe if people would just pay the prices that are truly deserving of the work that has been done to make the item. There would be more items there for sale like that but everyone wants something for nothing right apparently you expected native American dancers to be all over the streets like it used to be, maybe everyone got tired of the ugly comments that they got and how everyone thinks they are Cherokee when they're really not. It's a very rude thing to say and you wouldn't say this to any other person of any other race but yet it's acceptable for people to say this to Native Americans. They are tired of the attitude that they get from the people that come there. That is why they are not so welcoming. Maybe you should do everyone a favor and don't go back we don't need your judgmental attitude.

Bringing a camera around from door to door and not asking is kinda rude, ya know? And how do you know these people wanted to be recorded and on your CZcams channel. So, you weren’t entirely respectful bc you didn’t ask first. You just walked right in and started recording. The man at the shop turned around bc he didn’t wanna be recorded. I saw him turn around. Jeff & Marie, The No photography rule is a LONG LIVED Native Law. One reason for it is the majority of goods in these shops are handmade crafts and they don't want you to photo/video thier goods to make yourself. I specialised in Natives photography for awhile but found it too cumbersome to continually ask If I could make their pictures so I quit.

If I owned a store I would welcome the opportunity of FREE advertisement. I also feel & I'm sure I'm not alone in this is that if you allow your shopers to feel more at home and welcome them into your store they will probably purchase something. I noticed in the video no one welcomed them into the store and when they were greeted by the customer đŸ€” The employee turned their back on them. I personally would have left The store wondering what do they have to hide If having a camera made them act this way. To each his own but by the looks of the video The store didn't seem busy at all. I have to disagree on the friendliness and of things to do. I always talk to the locals. They are a bit stand offish if you don't take the time to visit. True there are not the flash and polish of Gatlinburg but therin lies the charm for me. I appreciate not tripping over people to get an overpriced soda.
To be fair, I go for the time spent in the mountains. Trout fishing there is world class and with little more than a 30 minute drive you can be in very remote areas. And Maggie Valley has the nicest people of anywhere in the area.

Sorry your trip was unimpressive. Like everywhere, shut down was not kind to artists and shop owners, but they are slowly coming back. IF that’s what you’re there for. I camp at a Native owned campground just outside town at least twice a year. The people are friendly, the campground is clean and the showers hot. I’ve met many Native Americans there thru the years and have never felt unwelcome. I’ve spend many evenings around a campfire enjoying conversation, food and music with some of the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. The Cherokee are a proud and perseverant people. The dances you witnessed way back when we’re not necessarily those traditional to the Cherokee. The people grew tired of dancing on the streets for tips. Like many artists, they grew tired of tourists trying to bargain with them as if the product were not appreciated enough. These days, they can sell their crafts online and not have to deal with rude tourists busting out a camera in their shop or perhaps making negative comments that were overheard by staff. A simple-good morning/afternoon, hello or just plain hi when accompanied with a genuine smile can get you far in this southern community. The same is true at the Casino where many Cherokee have found year round employment versus seasonal tourism based income. Smart decision I’d say. As for me, I avoid Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge like plague. Now a camp site in Cades Cove ? Sign me up!

I guess like many of the comments below, Cherokee NC used to be one of the top places to go in the fall, along with Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Maggie Valley. I always thought Cherokee was so unique because of the Cherokee Indians who lived there. I was drawn to their handmade crafts, costumes and most definitely the play, ‘Unto These Hills’. There were the tourist places, but also little unique artsy places and such. I even recall you could stay in a teepee room. The last nice thing they did was build a Cherokee Museum which was awesome, and then in the 80’s the big bingo halls were the draw, and the gamblers came, then the casino. Now it is like a ghost town of its former self. A drive through now is about all I need.

When i was a young boy and we'd visit the town you'd always find natives dressed up and greeting the tourists. I loved their outfits, so colorful and creative it was mesmerizing. And if you were lucky some of the natives would share facts about the cherokee and tell you little stories. I sure miss those days. Many Cherokee people have objections to being filmed for spiritual reasons. It was incredibly disrespectful to film people's faces, especially without asking. You were driving down the street at an extremely slow speed while filming, forcing people to drive around you. I've been to Cherokee many times and have always been treated much better than you were because I was more respectful to the native people of the town.

Unto these Hills Outdoor Amphitheater depicting the true story of the Historic Trail of Tears experience and Eternal Flame. Also, the LIVING Indian Village where you walk through and they are actually making jewelry, weaving baskets, grinding corn, making canoes and showing tribal dances and the medicine house you never showed or mentioned. Mingo Falls near the KOA Campground is beautiful. The Elk are something to see near the Oconaluftee Indian Village just as you come out of the park. We see them every time and the old farmstead and river walk trail is so nice. The Great Smoky Mountain Railway is about 8 or 9 miles from Cherokee and the open air cars of the train is such a beautiful ride. You can continued towards Cherokee. The beautiful Oconoluftee Vistors center is a must see for your trip. Mingus Mill is before Cherokee , Ming Falls is on Cherokee also. We have not been there but, I’ve hear it’s wonderful. The park is pretty too with the river rolling through it. And don’t forget the herds of elk. They are a sight to see.
Cherokee is a sad depressing place as you drive around, I’m sad it has gone down hill so much. I hate a Casino for many reasons.

I am really sorry to hear that you didn't have a better experience in Cherokee. I've been coming here since I was a baby and now I live 5 minutes away. There's so much more to explore than just the parking lots of the gift shops there. I'm wondering why in the world you wouldn't go to the bear zoo! As far as photography goes, a lot of those places offer a chance to have your picture taken there with someone dressed in beautiful Cherokee ceremonial attire. Feathers and all...even a tee pee for the background behind you. There's a small maybe $5 fee to do that but it's definitely worth it. Reckon they wouldn't be able to do that if they allowed photography. I do regret that you had such an experience here. Hopefully you'll come back again and see it in a totally different light. You heard don't judge a book by its cover? Well I say don't judge a town by the gift shops

Hi Jeff and Marie. I love your channel. I do agree that Cherokee and Maggie Valley are not what they use to be back in the 60's and 70's. But not very much is. There are still some authentic Cherokee places in Cherokee. Next time you are passing through, go to the Bearmeat's Indian Den store. It is a beautiful store with authentic Native American merchandise. I love the different bread they have in a fridge on the back porch. The store is after the Casino, but before the Soco Falls (I think). A creek runs behind the store and I could sit on the back porch and listen to it for hours, if they would let me. You and I remember Cherokee and MV when Frontier Land (it was located where the casino is at now) and Ghost Town in Maggie Valley were the places to go. The short dances the Cherokee did outside of store fronts, a long time ago, were to get the tourist to go into the store to buy things. Try catching some of a Pow Wow sometime. That is where the true dances and beautiful regalia are found. As with any small town, the kids all grew up and sought better jobs and opportunity in the cities, so the small towns kind of dried up. The Cherokee could also be tired of "pandering to the white man" for a dollar. They simply have better things to do. Most arts and crafts stores will not let you video or take pictures in their stores. The arts and crafts tour (route) in Maggie Valley is the same way. I do agree that the casino leaves something to be desired. It has gone downhill over the past few years. Sorry this is long. I really do enjoy your channel.

Used to go to Frontier Land, alot. Same with Ghost Town In The Sky and we still go to Santa Land a few times a year. It's still like revisiting my childhood. I don't drink or gamble and have never set foot in Harrah's nor will I. I think that place helped destroy what was once Cherokee. When it opened in 97 or 98 a lot of the small traditional motels started to vanish along with the restaurants. Even back in the 70s a lot of the Indian stores were full of stuff made in Taiwan but still had some handmade crafts. I'd still rather go there then the commercial excess of Sevier County.

I have always felt welcomed and had a good visit. My family visited the area a few times when I was a kid. I think some of these commentors remember things the way they want to and not the way they really were. The casino has done a lot for that area. Do yourself a favor, learn the Cherokee history and then visit. It makes a big difference.

Cherokee is like the old days where the sidewalk rolls up at 6pm. Nothing to do in town. If you're at the casino, you have few options for food, and have to drive far to get it if don't want Wendy's. The casino is the only entertainment in town. Your kids won't have fun there if they don't like hiking and playing in the woods.
