- The 2.6 mile rail line, which travels through the heart of Cambridge Massachusetts, is thought by many to be abandoned. However, at night, this dormant line comes alive with train action!

Wow! After watching all 21 minutes and 53 seconds of this video I feel so incredibly educated on the grand junction! 😁
Liar.
@@BostonByRailsthat felt personal
Wow that view from the bridge of the Boston skyline is absolutely stunning! Really awesome video 😃
Imagine how useful this line would be as an actual revenue passenger line?
First! Awesome video! I love the Grand Junction! Nice video Boston!
Awesome video! Spent alot of time in Boston in my early college years esp around BU. Always told the line was used but never was able to see it in action. I’ve walked along the bridge at night, it’s pretty cool. Thanks for sharing the footage!
Glad you enjoyed! And yea, its hard to find trains on that line. I spent 3 years trying before I really understood the patterns of the operations
Well done! This is actually the Grand Junction Running Track as it is designated NORAC Rule 97 track, not Rule 98 (Rule 98 being Other Than Main Track). Restricted Speed does apply. All movements either need verbal permission from the Dispatcher, or signal indication. Trains can follow each other as it's usually a directional authority (i.e. "ok West on the Grand Junction Running Track between Swift and Beacon Park") given by the Terminal Train Dispatcher.
Thats the corrections I was waiting for! I was sure i didnt get it right 😂 thanks alot for this info, this really helps!
Nighttime action, I'm sure all the fancy new apartments along the route love that!
Intersting spot for a good production video...great work Boston By Rails😊
On Sundays when I feel like going to south station I accidentally catch the Readville swithcer
WOW WOW WOW, That's all I can say I had no clue any of this happens! Loved seeing Jakwelline's Foamer Fun: Elevators, Escalators, and More there as well, I hope to catch some grand junction action soon!
Thank you!! Im so glad you enjoyed the video
You guys Rock. Love your live of trains and you will dive deep into there whereabouts. I get a whole new insight of the Bridge and all that happens on it. Looking forward to seeing the next one ✌️👍
Glad you enjoyed!
Let’s go! Reeeeeeeeeeedddddvileeeee switcherrrr
I remember the days when the Ringling Bros Barnum and Bailey Circus would get its elephants to the Garden on that line.
You're a hoot!
GO HEELS
i remember it in the daytime once and people put flairs down
16:10 WOWIEE!!!!!!
Very much unique, thank you for sharing!
Great video! I bet Retired Railfan Horn Guy is jealous.
You need to either charge, or change the batteries in your scanner.....lol
I remember seeing freight moves along the Grand Junction in the 60s and 70s. Does CSX run anything on it anymore unless PAR/Guilford killed it all off, or is it only used as a connector between the two terminals?
This area once had some extensive freight operations and it's sad to see it all gone now. Polaroid used to get in tank cars of chemicals and other warehouses and companies got all kinds of goods. According to my mother, there used to be a Liquid Carbonic distributor in the area too.
I always thought that this line would make a nice passenger loop between the north and south side with stops along the line for MIT and the other companies that have opened up in the area. It would mean building a wye near the old Beacon Yards along with double-tracking and signaling the branch.
No freight anymore sadly. Only these passenger moves
@@BostonByRailsThat's too bad. Thank you for the update on that.
this was awesome to watch, keep up the nice quality
Thank you so much!
I loved this video!
Tyty
Great video! You got my sub!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
Nice video 🔥
Another video from the MAN himself!
Thanks!!
Great video quality. I love watching the trains go under the MIT buildings
Me too! One of the coolest parts about the line for sure
Awesome video! 171/86 Tues/Wed !
That’s enough photos
I have known this for a long time. I did see a train on this back in 2013 and another one back in 2021.
YAYYYYY
Great video. I had no idea they did nightly runs throughout the week at night
Thanks!
People think that is abandoned? My local Santa Paula branch line with UP runs once a month
Ppht! Thats crazy! I think its just the appearance of the line going over a derelict looking rail bridge, and also the fact that its in the middle of a dense urban area, so tons of people see it every day but never see it with trains on it
🚂🚂🚂🚂
Gotta love the BU bridge, prime smoke spot real estate, good times there trying to catch the Readville and knocking back Dr. McGillicuddy's (back when I still drank) and screaming obscenities at the passing crew teams
timers are also supposed to be based on track speeds. high speeds usually dictate longer wait times. they can be bypassed with a shunt on the mainline
Why don’t the crossing lights work anymore? They used to..
Just an FYI you go to Google Maps you can follow along and see exactly where the line starts and stops. 14:49 MIT Nuclear Reactor Labatory. I believe at the MIT Pedestrian Crossing there is a small sign saying, "Private Railroad Crossing" and the same on the other side of the rail line. A legal thing, I guess.
This is actually the place where the North South Rail Link should go. Much cheaper to establish, and more resilient to coastal flooding.
A second BET is planned for SouthBay/SI building. curious to know what may happen to the grand junction
Great Video! Are all the Grand Junction comms on 161.415?
Yes!
THIS FELLOW IS VERY GOOD-just came across the video-the video ad commentary quality are superior to almost all I have seen-comparable to Distant Signal
Thank!!!!
Amazing video. You see todays switcher? it had 1135 LHF despite no ditchlights on that end.
He didn’t
Thanks for watching!! I unfortunately did not :(
@@BostonByRails ah rip. Maybe next time
Those bearcat scanners eat up battery power very fast!!
Yea! They loose battery very quick
Any updates on EMD F40ph 1013?
Charge your scanner
2:31 aw yes totally walked
🤫
I've been on that BU bridge at night a handful of times and never realized it ran trains on it, oops
The trains don't run on the BU bridge. They run on another bridge that runs UNDER the BU Bridge.
Nice video.. where is 3.3 switch exactly . I know the BU Bridge and mass Ave crossing .. can you tell me this info so I may Railfan at this awesome location.. thanks
Thanks! 3.3 is located right under where the I90 bridge begins near beacon pakr yard on the eastern end. Its next to BU lot E
