After a bit of a delay, its finally here! Amtrak's Genesis locomotives came in at a time when the railroad's F40PH's were getting up in age. They'd been the primary motive power since the mid 1970s, and by then it was the 1990s. Amtrak needed a new and modern replacement to their boxy engines. General Electric was chosen to manufacture a replacement. It went under the name AMD-103, but would later better be known as the P40DC, or more generally speaking, Genesis. This line of locomotives would prove to be a major upgrade for Amtrak and continues to impact the railroad to this day.

Fantastic video!!!! I’m honored to once again be a part of your narrated video series again!!! I enjoyed seeing my video at 11:51 with Amtrak P42DC Heritage Unit 156 leading Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train 777 which was certainly a sight to see!!! Amtrak’s GE Genesis locomotives have been a large part of the fleet for well over 30 years now and its always fascinating to see and hear them on both intercity and long-distance trains throughout the country, particularly for me in California when it comes to intercity routes like the Pacific Surfliner or Long-Distance routes like the Coast Starlight and Southwest Chief, they are quite the sight to behold and I will always remember them as one of the many icons of Amtrak, much like the F40PH, Dash-8 and F59!!! Of course now, we are living in a time of innovation and becoming more environmentally conscious/friendly while it might be sad to say goodbye to them with the new Siemens SC-44 Charger and ALC-42 Charger locomotives entering service which have been growing on me I will still always remember seeing and hearing them in soo many unique and exciting ways of pulling and pushing trains throughout the rail network!!! Amazing Job!!! :)

Very nice video Jared. I was hoping I would’ve been able to have shown my photos or vid clips in this episode but maybe for your Siemens Charger episode soon. In reference to the locomotives, I kinda now think it would have been great if Amtrak’s state sponsored services in California would have planned to purchase to get Genesis units of their own. I think a Tier 4 version of them would have also been great especially for long distance service even since GE built the ET44 for freight. As far as Siemens being the most for Amtrak’s future, I just wish we had some variety for new coaches and locomotives for their trains even for state sponsored services. Heck I think Alstom would have been a great option for new doubledecker coaches on the Illinois and California services since Nippon Sharyo’s deal ended up failing.

P42DC 32 was the last P42 and the final Genesis Series locomotive to wear Phase III paint, while P42DC 82 was the last P42 to wear Phase IV paint.

The only missed part is that the MBTA MPI HSP46 was designed in 2009 based on the genesis Series with a GEVO 12 Stroke Diesel Engine

These engines are some of the most successful diesel locomotives to serve passenger trains in America. Unfortunately, they are now being replaced by the Chargers. Not to mention that the single shell design can be a headache for maintenance and railroad workers. If the shell is heavily damaged, the locomotive is most likely done for, less we forget the Amtrak locomotive involved in the CSX collision in 2018. Even tho any locomotive would be demolished in a collision like that, the single shell design made it so much worse, and are only made it worse for the Amtrak crew who didn't survive that disaster.

The RTA should purchase some Ex-Amtrak P32AC-DMs for switching services on the CTA and Metra.

Most of the original P40s 800-843 were withdrawn in 2005 from service, when Amtrak exited the express business for good.

despite what amtrak corporate is saying, and what everyone else seems to believe, the P42s and P32s (and the amfleets for that matter) will continue running until the early 2030's, at least in the northeast and midwest, on non-electrified routes. beside the fact that amtrak intends to keep expanding service ASAP (which they need extra motive power and coaches to do!!), siemens keeps fucking up on their manufacture of the ALC42s, and the ALC42E's design wasn't finalized until this past december, with initial delivery dates (currently) slated for 2026. the stupid battery car thing is still in the planning phase, so if you want to see P32s, you're going to be able to for over a decade and a half at this rate.

I actually love the GE Genesis, however I don’t understand why do some railfans hate them for no reason. I actually saw one comment which they didn’t care if they were scrapped anyway.

  • @RonnieThePRRLocoAKARPTLMR

Thankfully I've seen a P42 in Washington DC. But I don't remember the number at all. I seriously want to see more than just one. I'm REALLY hoping that preservation rescues as many Genesis diesels as they can before it's too late. Some of them might have a farewell excursion or more than one. Too sad they're all being replaced by the SC-44s and ALC-42s even though I love those two locomotive classes so much.
