    It might be a good idea to place some smart water detection relays inside your boat. They are inexpensive at Home Depot, Lowes, Amazon etc..They saved my friends hardwood floors by alerting them of a kitchen waterline leak. I'm extremely interested in the lightning protection you spoke of. Please cover this topic in depth. Parlay Revival has suffered its second strike with extensive damage. Thanks for sharing.

    Safe or not ,I'd have a hard time sleeping with a bunch of batteries that could catch on fire or have an electrical problem under my mattress or the mattress of one of my kids or a guest. It just seems that there should be a dedicated room for the battery and all the electronics it takes to operate this electrical system.

    Be sure to put a grommet in where the wires exit the mast. Otherwise you risk the wires wearing and shorting. Very important on a sailboat.

    Probably too late, but if you haven't stepped the mast yet, consider fabricating a strap to hold the top of the conduit in place and riveting it in. The 2ga wire for the CMCE is heavy and the conduit is relatively flimsy. In a seaway the inertia of that heavy wire can pull the conduit off its track and there's no way to fix it without pulling the masthead off. Ask me how I know.

    So glad you guys are back and working on the 50, Sucks about the batteries, but if they are holding charge they might just need some electroclean and a wipe. swap out the dead cells ???
    Love the one peice mast.....

  • @andersonautomotive
    @andersonautomotive Před rokem

    I installed a CMCE device on my boat. Almost a year later and so far so good. I don't have any illusions that anything will defeat lightning 100% of the time, but it was the warranty that sold me. Expensive device, but cheap insurance.

    FYI lithium batteries can set them selves on fire months after water damage, many car rebuilders are finding that out after buying flood damage cars I would get rid of the all and start fresh

    To, sorry about your Tesla battery packs. I saw your flashlight when you were working on your new mast, good choice, I purchased my first Streamlight in 1983 during my second tour of duty in South Korea, the most I ever had to buy for it were replacement batteries, and I used it during my military career and a 20 year civilian law enforcement career, however after I retired, I learned that Streamlight no longer supported its repair, I’m guessing 20 plus year is a great lifetime for a rechargeable flashlight and when the Stinger 2020 came out I got one for an I’ve been using it here in the Philippines. I plan on purchasing more when I return to Texas to visit in August. Streamlight also sell a rechargeable spotlight which I got my first around 2016. I’ve never had a use for any other flashlight besides Streamlight. Keep the videos coming and yes I’m watching here in the Philippines.

      They are no doubt feeling the Break Out Another Thousand pain of a 50. I bid on a 2019 50 out in Abaco post Dorian called Olympian. Hull #1 of the 50 series. Demast but relatively clean as far as salvaged boats go. The salvage crews are the fk'ing worst. They strip everything out. Anchors, computers, nav equipment, dingy's motor computers even, everything. Some dummy won the boat with a $70k bid.

    I've got 12 of those modules in my off grid home, don't bother repairing it, it's compromised and not worth the risk. Look on eBay, prices have dropped on those like you would not believe, you can get a great low mileage module for $600.00 now

    The lightening strike product information you spoke about, Colin from parley revival really needs to order one too after his last post. It’s crazy how much extra work you have to do if you leave the boat for any amount of time. That’s so frustrating about your batteries after you put some much effort, time and money getting them right last year 🤗

      It could have been much worse. Normally a car fire you can put out with 500 to 1,000 gallons of water,” Austin Fire Department Division Chief Thayer Smith said, “Teslas may take up to 30,000-40,000 gallons of water, maybe even more, to extinguish the battery pack once it starts burning.

  • @Rob-ee1im
    @Rob-ee1im Před rokem

    I would never use cobalt batteries on a boat, because of the big fire risk! A LiFePO4 battery will be much safer...
    Next to that a case to protect the batteries from water would be handy too. Why don't you shop for instance some Battle Born batteries?

  • @danratsnapnames
    @danratsnapnames Před rokem

    seeing that those batteries didn't flare off, i would almost have to say that the water that got on them was not salt water.. and that rust and corrosion is actually repairable. you should break those battery packs down and see just what is good or bad. those battery packs are not hard to break down, they are just a collection of parts afterall. batteries, controllers, sensors, housing and so on.

    • @danratsnapnames
      @danratsnapnames Před rokem

    I'm sure this is too late for you guys, but maybe someone else can benefit from this hint. When building a motorcycle that has wires going through the frame or handlebars, what we do is plug up all the holes except two. One where the wire starts and one where the wire ends. Then we get a soft string and put it about an inch inside the start hole. Next, we blow compressed air into the starting hole. The air, and soft string will exit through the exit hole. You may be able to use the exhaust side of a shop vac for this as well, if a compressor is not close by. Once the string is through, you can attach your wires and continue.

    • @edwardnigma2216
      @edwardnigma2216 Před rokem

      You can also use the suction side of the shop vac to simply suck the string through the hole... No compressed air needed. But yeah, this is good advice and works like a charm.

    • @andersonautomotive
      @andersonautomotive Před rokem

      Great tip for something like a motorcycle, but 0% chance of this working on a mast that size. It's simply a matter of the volume of air that would have to move to create a meaningful flow. Let alone having to perfectly seal the dozens of holes along the way.

    • @edwardnigma2216
      @edwardnigma2216 Před rokem

      @@andersonautomotive Isn't the answer to that one obvious? Get a bigger shop vac or blower... :D Or tie one of the wife's poofy shower scrubber things to the end of the line...

    Ughh always an issue with boats - hard to work on two boats at once so if the wet batteries is the only negative outfall, guess you are still ahead ??!! Hang in there- the finish line is within reach!

  • @TheCort1971
    @TheCort1971 Před rokem

    geeze.... i hate that the packs got wet. ive built a lot of house and boat battery banks from lithium cells over the last five years. mostly 18650 cell but some other kinds. the way tesla builds these packs is that each cell is individually fused via small wire on the bus. each cell is isolated that way. you MAY be able to get them apart but its not easy and the nickel bus will need to be replaced and spot welded back into place. very labor intensive.

  • @samroberts9862
    @samroberts9862 Před rokem

    The conduit design seems flawed. Why couldn't they have moved the hole on top of the mast to be directly in line with the conduit? Reduce potential chafe points inside the mast and make future cable runs/replacements a heck of a lot easier.
