The cruise ship Hanseatic docks in Reykjavík harbor in the early 1960s. The capital of Iceland is one of the first destinations on the trip that started in Hamburg. The film shows us beautiful shots of the Hanseatic anchoring in the bay as well as a pan over the panorama of the city - filmed from the ship. The passengers are brought into the harbor in small landing craft, from where they begin the shore excursion. A volcano as well as hot springs and waterfalls in the vicinity of Reykjavik are part of the program of the excursion.
Reykjavík is the northernmost capital in the world (269 km south of the Arctic Circle). The city forms the municipality of Reykjavíkurborg with rural areas and islands. The name Reykjavík ("Smoke Bay") probably comes from the steam from the hot springs. The city is the oldest permanent settlement in the country. Although the first settlers populated the country in 870 AD, the area grew slowly and was not elevated to a city until 1786.
Reykjavík is the largest city in Iceland with 128,793 inhabitants (as of 2019). The city is located on the Atlantic Ocean, on Faxaflói Bay below the 900 m high mountain Esja. The city's coast is characterized by (pen) islands, caves and straits. During the last ice age (up to about 10,000 years ago) parts of today's urban area were covered by glaciers, while other parts lay below the waterline. The hills Öskjuhlíð and Skólavörðuholt are former shield volcanoes that were active during the warmer periods of the Ice Age.

Das Kreuzfahrtschiff Hanseatic legt in den frühen 1960er-Jahren im Hafen von Reykjavík an. Die Hauptstadt von Island ist eines der ersten Ziele der in Hamburg gestarteten Reise. Der Film zeigt uns schöne Aufnahmen der in der Bucht ankernden Hanseatic sowie einen Schwenk über das Panorama der Stadt - vom Schiff aus gefilmt. Die Passagiere werden mit Landungsbooten in den Hafen gebracht, von wo aus sie den Landausflug in Angriff nehmen. Ein Vulkan sowie heiße Quellen und Wasserfälle in der Umgebung von Reykjavik gehören zum Programm des Ausflugs.
Reykjavík ist die am nördlichsten gelegene Hauptstadt der Welt (269 km südlich des nördlichen Polarkreises). Die Stadt bildet mit ländlichen Gebieten und Inseln die Gemeinde Reykjavíkurborg. Der Name Reykjavík („Rauchbucht“) kommt vermutlich von den Dämpfen der heißen Quellen. Die Stadt ist die älteste permanente Siedlung des Landes. Obwohl die ersten Siedler 870 n. Chr. das Land bevölkerten, wuchs das Gebiet langsam und wurde erst 1786 zur Stadt erhoben.
Reykjavík ist mit 128.793 Einwohnern (Stand 2019) die größte Stadt Islands- Die Stadt liegt am Atlantik, an der Faxaflói-Bucht unterhalb des 900 m hohen Berges Esja. Die Küste der Stadt ist geprägt von (Halb-)Inseln, Höhlen und Meerengen. Während der letzten Eiszeit (bis vor etwa 10.000 Jahren) waren Teile des heutigen Stadtgebietes von Gletschern bedeckt, andere Teile lagen unterhalb der Wasserlinie. Die Hügel Öskjuhlíð und Skólavörðuholt sind ehemalige Schildvulkane, die in den wärmeren Perioden der Eiszeit aktiv waren.
