I would say this car, the 1953 Corvette, and the 1955 Nomad were the most "Motoramic" looking cars offered to the public. The Cadillac was just so over the top and expensive. You could say that the buyer could've bought just about any expensive '58 car at the time, but owning a Cadillac was the supreme American luxury car at the time. My father worked for them in the early '70's and the clientele was wealthy classy people. Today, when I see a big truck, however loaded with gadgets, with that big plastic Cadillac emblem on it, I think "what a disgrace to the marque".

The rocker panel said it all: "The Standard Of The World". A bold statement. And true. The real shame is that following generations of Cadillac "leadership" let that fall into the trash heap, and it took them until the 1990s to reclaim even a part of their great heritage. Fun fact: a basically stock 1950 Cadillac Series 61 finished 10th at LeMans in 1950. Really. Beat Ferraris.

Kind of hard to believe this is all original, some form of restoration must have been done. At least when it comes to engine detailing etc. The roof is stainless steel I heard. Wow! What a beautiful machine! I never knew that the trunk could automatically close as well as open. Likewise it showed the hood opening itself. But it did not show the hood closing all by itself. That would especially be neat as failure to properly close a (typical rear-hinged) hood is part of what causes them to get "sprung," by pushing down on the side, instead of evenly on the front. That, and not keeping the hinge mechanism lubricated. But I don't know if that was a problem with forward hinged hoods.

A rear hinged hood that opened by itself when operated from the inside would be a little unsafe, but with the hinges in front, the wind would keep the hood down if the car were moving. Either way, I can't thing of any other '58 car with an inside hood release.

My granddad bought one of these new in '58, kept it for ten years then passed it down to my big brother. Replaced it with a '68 Eldo POS. These '58 Broughams sold new for $14,500 +/- pocket change, at a time when RRs were selling new for around $9,500. And yes, GM lost money on 'em, all of the approx. 300 it produced. But hey, THIS is what Cadillac was all about then. As this video shows, these were no ordinary Eldos of the time. What's more the body parts weren't interchangeable with standard Eldos. Ghia built these bodies. Close examination of these cars reveals features that weren't "standard" until years later in others. Electric everything! GM boasted 26,000 miles of wiring when including all electric motor windings. You'll know these too by their characteristic brushed stainless steel rooves. They also had air cushion suspension at all four corners. Rode REAL smooth! Sadly on Granddad's these, being made of rubber, failed several years later, one of the caveats for collectors to consider these days. But having first hand experience I can honestly say these were the very definition of fine cruisers.

The very first time that I saw this model was at the auto show in 1957 for the 1958 cars. the one I saw was in dark blue with a white seats and dark blue carpet that felt like it was 1" thick! Never forgot this experience. Especially the stainless brushed top. I told my friend after seeing the sticker price, "Anyone paying over 10K for a car is crazy!" Little did I know...

I went along with my buddy and his dad to buy a Used 1956 Dodge at a N E Philadelphia dealership in 1959. The dealership had one of these in the showroom. My eyes just about popped out of my head. I was 16 and in my minds memory eye I can still see it. Drop dead beautiful car. I'm not sure if it was there just to show or if it was for sale at the time.

I have a 1958 Eldorado extended Biarritz with 60K on it parked in the barn out back right now......drove it back from Santa Inez California 28 years ago and brought it to northern Virginia.....biggest and heaviest car I own.......cool video.....what I find strange is the way the hood opens, mine is normal and the gas fill is under the chrome torpedo under the drivers side fin, it's also about 20 inches longer than this car....

My father had one of these between 1963 and 1968. I don't know what happened to it. I think he sold it for a down payment on a house. It had some really wild carpet in it. If you rubbed it one way it turned light. If you rubbed it the other way it turned dark. It was 100% original. Just a gorgeous car.

I was lucky enough to see and touch one exactly like this one in absolute pristine condition! There was a guy who worked in the GM Switzerland factory who owned and restored it. He was kind enough to expose it to the public I did never see it again.
They said the man owned a second one. Probably he sold it to finance the restoration of number two. For a real Cadillac fanatic like me this car is the real deal. They said it cost Cadillac at least twice the amount it was sold for.
A friend of mine drove 3 times for hours just to see one that was for sale: That was over fourty years ago. That time it was sold of about 40000$. A huge sum back then. He played lottery for months hoping to win enough to purchase it. But of course no luck!

Belly up to the glove box for a shot😂 With all the bells and whistles this baby has you think they would have made the gas door more inconspicuous, like they did with hidden under the tail light and even more so left off the word 'gasoline' off.
However the best Cadillac ever built! Love the coach doors (suicide)

  • @johnbullerjahn884
    @johnbullerjahn884 Před 2 lety +1

Gorgeous example. I seem to remember an Eldorado (the Biarritz?) of the same vintage and style with a brushed stainless steel roof that purportedly cost more than a Rolls.
I also remember the Eldorado Convertible (same year I think) that was a styling blend of 'pointy and squish' with a suggestion of a Continental Kit on the trunk. A classmate of mine parent's had one in pink. I think.
Wonderful music, shooting and perfect example of letting the subject do the talking. A narration would have ruined it.
I know this is really, really OCD picky, but I would have loved it had a quick session with a car vac been used.
I subscribed based on this one video I saw for the first time. Looking forward to more!

Hey, thanks for watching! The Eldorado Brougham was the only cadillac in the 50's with a stainless steel roof. The Eldorado Biarritz' were only convertibles. if you wanted an Eldorado with a roof, it would have been named the Seville. Again thanks for the great feedback!
