    UPDATE : IT HAS BEEN THREE WEEKS NOW !! CHECK OUT THE VIDEO WHERE I TASTE IT !!!!!..............My father taught me this recipe forty years ago. He started making this in the 1940's and learned from his dad who was an old moonshiner. My dad made a batch that was ready in three days. He sat it in the back of an old car in the summer and rolled up all the windows. Dad took it to my grandmother's house one Christmas. She thought it was just juice and drank a big water glass full. Only time I EVER saw her dance.

    I actually homebrew beer and went to my local brewing supplier and he gave me a glass of a wine he had made..it was VERY high alcohol content LOL...I was shocked when I asked his ingredients...he laughed and told me how he made it. It was very close to this, the only difference is he did his in a larger batch, 5 gallons. He used liquid Concord grape juice and with the sugar, he slowly added his sugar to boiling water, dissolving the sugar into the water until it was very thick, then added it to the juice after it cooled. As to the yeast he used a champagne yeast. I am not a wine drinker and was really shocked at how good it was
    This is very good. lots of good tips, thanks for sharing your method.

    Just as an added precaution, I also put a ziplock or sandwich bag with a rubber band over the cracked open lid, where the rubber band is below the lid, so that it doesn't interfere with the lid itself. It just probably helps trap some more co2, not necessary and no idea if it actually helps, but it's fun.

    The wifey and I have been getting a lil serious about wine making, (15+ gallons at a time, bottling machine, labels etc) and it's incredible how difficult people make it sound on the internet.
    Just remember that fermentation goes back about as far as written history, if it was such a difficult process that involved surgical levels of sterlization... wine making wouldnt have existed till a hundred years ago.
    Just have common sense about it and you will never lose a batch.
    Out of 5 runs and with just the heads on our shoulders and no obscure chemicals we've havent seen a failure.

    great video! You've got 1 more subscriber. i enjoy the bit of humor you use also. years ago my grandma resorted to selling wine out of her house because she couldn't make it on her ssi check. she made all sorts of wines such as dandelion, tomato, elderberry, etc. that tomato wine would knock your socks off. her rule was buy it here drink it at home. much like you she didn't use any of the fancy equipment or techniques you see in videos today. she always placed a piece of toast with yeast on top of the liquid. the next day that piece of toast would cover the entire top of the bucket. she said it lets it breath and keeps the critters out. i was very young then and couldn't say if it did or not, but one thing was for sure though. she did 1 heck of a business out of her tiny little house.

    Reporting back after making 5 gallons of the grape wine. Altered recipe slightly since I make beer also. Sterilized everything as you would when making beer. Also changed to 4 cups of sugar to raise ABV and yeast to 1 1/2 tsp. Boiled 16 ounces of raisins in 2 gallons of water, strained and then used the raisin juice to liquefy the sugar over low heat four cups at a time and used the juice equally in the 5 jugs since the raisin juice activates the yeast and it adds a little extra flavor. Put balloons with pin hole over top of used clean 1 gallon wine jugs just because I wanted to see the fermentation inflate the balloons. Wine completed making in 16 days total in a cool dark place away from any light and about 75 degrees in the house. ABV turned out to be 12%. Turned out sweet and just right alcohol wise. Live with my wife and mother in law who is not always easy to please and she poured out her gallon of store bought wine because she preferred yours. Have 7 gallons of mixed fruit wine in the making now using same recipe other than the juice change and the balloons were already inflated 30 minutes after mixing in the jugs. Thanks Doing It Cheap for an uncomplicated wine recipe.

      You did say that your wine is ready in three weeks and in another video I saw you pour the ready wine into a smaller bottle. So at that time, did you just close the bottle tightly? I assume you don't need to do the quarter turn on the cap to let the air out.

    • @DoingItCheap
      @DoingItCheap  Před 7 lety

      When you saw me "rack" the wine. That means siphon it off into smaller containers. I was transferring the wine to other containers trying to leave the sediment in the original. You DO NOT want to seal the bottle tight if it is a screw on lid. Unless you freeze the wine for a few days to kill the yeast, it is possible for it to continue fermenting and that builds pressure in a sealed container. I just put it in the refrigerator and try to coordinate the timing for a new batch to come off about the time I am done with what is in the refrigerator. Those mason jars were tightened and then the lid backed off about a half turn.

    You remind me so much of my dad. He and my grand daddy were both boot-leggers back in the day and they made all kinds of hooch. This was basically the same way they made peach and muscadine wine. Loved the video!
