Zulaport only triggers on your own creatures, guys. Blood Artist triggers on all creatures but deals damage to target opponent

Reading cards explains them. Corey used one treasure to crack a food (then had two treasures left for next turn instead of one) and no one read zulaport cutthroat.
The banter and interaction between you guys is great, but the basics have to be right too.
Oathbreaker, maybe more than any other casual format, really requires a playgroup that is on the same page about power level. It’s very fun when people build similarly powerful (or not powerful) decks, but it can become broken easily. My favorite personal deck I have is a Tezzeret agent of bolas with rise and shine, as a vehicle deck. Super casual, super fun.

@@chrisrobinson6684 I don’t have it online, but the idea is to play the cheap vehicles with keywords, and when they are animated with tezz or rise and shine they keep those keywords. So something like smuggler’s copter becomes a 2 mana 5/5 flyer, with its attack trigger. Definitely better ways to build Tezz, but it really feels like little kid magic, so i always have a blast.
For future reference if you Elk magus all non basics are still mountains because of layers
Can you explain why this is? "Target artifact or creature loses all abilities and becomes a green Elk creature with base power and toughness 3/3." suggests it loses the static ability that causes land to be mountains. It's not continutally impacting so there's no ability to be considered at another layer.
@@Taphosthewarlock the layer rules of changing types vs layer where abilities are gained and lost.
do nonbasic lands after he is turned to an elk also become mountains?
@@scifoncra6376 after some research on my part, yes. Because of the way layers work the Magus' ability is constantly active.

Signature spell can never go anywhere BUT the Command Zone and the stack.

2018* was when I introduced my pod to it. My decks were too skrong. Pod no like. Oathbreaker lasted all of 4-5 games...rip 2018.

My Oathbreaker deck years ago was Huatli, the Sun's Heart / Bar the Door infect
I like how Corey wanted to play okko and still have friends but little did he know that playing oko at all an means you already have friends
It would've been really funny had someone played Shorikai since it is the only legal non-planeswalker commander in the format

Song of the Dryads doesn't prevent Flame Rift from being cast. If anything, it gets him closer to casting it again.
While it gave him 1 mana as a forest it took away the +1 that adds 2 red mana...
Trading two mana for one doesn't set someone back?
Really like this format and how it's anti-durdle while built around the durdliest card type.

I loved the game. for anyone that has preconceived notions about the formate, i highly suggest giving it a try. Most decks are easy to build (60 cards is less than 100) and it still leads to some interesting interactions. The big pull for the formate is its speed and the banning of fast mana for less feel bads
On the flip side of the coin. I have built several oathbreaker decks and just generally hate that the format is too quick. I like the inconsistency of 100 card commander. I also feel like the format is extremely unbalanced

I find the speed to be good cause I have adhd and by midway during a commander game I've gotten bored. Id rather get 10 oathbreaker games in than 3 commander games. But again its all preferences and its fine we both have our own
@@shawnmcmahon3117 not really, people have tried to "break" it but even with flash hulk being a tier 1 strategy its kept in check by the fact that free or cheap interaction (forces, pitch elements, pacts, silence, ect) is alot more consistent
Fast mana literally isn't banned when Bubbling Muck, all the non-color specific Mox cards being legal, and Dramatic Reversal+Iso being legal. Also, Petal was literally played in this game right at the beginning. "No fast mana" lol.
The *only* fast mana banned in this format that isn't banned in commander is sol ring, crypt, vault, geyser, and high tide. Banning 5 cards isn't "banning fast mana", it's banning cards that are auto includes for no logical reason(I understand crypt and vault, if only for how prohibitively expensive they are).
I find it really funny that, in a format where it is significantly better than in commander, Jeska's Will isn't banned. It is better than geyser, but is legal. The ban list really comes across like the old commander ban list where its just a bunch of cards 1 person doesn't like playing against.
@@casteanpreswyn7528 they ban and unban stuff based off of play testing. I think jeska's will eventually get the axe, but bans take time. They wait at least 3 months for a card to be out before a ban and even then they are hesitant to ban cards.
Also I miss spoke sorry they banned the best fast mana, not all of it. Like it or not you have to admit that soul ring, mana crypt and the likes only lead to feels bad moments and commander would do good banning them especially when people that play vintage are willing to make the argument that they are just as good as the power nine mox. The fast mana left over is either not as good cause they have a cost to them (2 of the moxin you have to do card disadvantage for, 3 you have to meet a condition/ wait to use) or not as utilized as the counter parts (bubbling muck isn't as good as high tide because black doesn't have nearly as many untap effects). Im not saying those cards aren't good just clearly not as good as sol ring or high tide.
I can't BELIEVE they bungled Zulaport and it mattered for both games! You can SEE Stephen leaning forward to "read" his own card. SMH

I believe to truely balance the game is that only sorcery spells should be your signature spell because planeswalkers can only activate their ablity at sorcery speed. Maybe magic will make enchantment type of card that adds loyalty abilities to any permanent
I don't think that's how zula does work but I also don't think that really affected how the game played out.
I do think that Stephen won the first game because of it

20:55 im confused here. How does Zulaport Cutthroat kill Jeremy and Jonathan, when it is only one trigger? Even if it was Blood Artist it was only 3 triggers. So how was 4 life lost? Do they not know how to read the cards or what?

This might be irrelevant but even if you Oko a magus of the moon all nonbasics are still mountains.
Incorrect ruling explained on the Oko and Magus interaction. Even if Oko turned Magus into an Elk all the non basics would still be mountains.

It's been around a long time already, but I generally agree that it won't have the staying power of commander.
Probably no were near as strong, but Arlinn Kord leading Werewolves with Moon mist as my spell is what I'd play.
Loading Ready Run did that. You might want to check that out.

this just looks like another super competitive broken type format :D fun to watch, don't think i will ever play it. (not big on the hyper competitive formats anymore, i like my casual)

I see why Oathbreaker never took off... The game ends before it even starts.
To be fair, there was a burn deck that was designed around dealing damage to everyone. He dealt like 6+ a turn to everyone. Cutting the number of turns in half, at least.
Thats the pull to the formate not a negative. it was designed with the purpose of being able to be played over a lunch break. And if you do have time getting in 6 or 7 games can lead to just as much fun as getting in 2 games of commander.
I suggest trying it at least once since the formate is overall cheaper than commander because almost all the fast mana is banned (including sol ring). It is really fun and I've been enjoying it
@The Wallace the weird thing is High Tide is banned but Bubbling Muck isn't. Also, aside from the power 9 moxen, none of them are banned.
@@casteanpreswyn7528 how many monoblack cards untap the lands that you are using to tap for extra mana. also muck is a sorcery which is relevant at times.

Fabled passage fetches for tapped basic land. Corey only sacreficed 1 treasure to pay for food 3 life. humm..
If you control 4 or more lands after fetching then the fetched land enters untapped.
@@Universum this is only functionally incorrect. The land enters tapped then untaps. It's only relevant when you get other game pieces involved like Amulet of Vigor.

SCG has enough money to have another person just to make sure rules are being followed.
Turning Johns oathbreaker into a land with the enchantment wouldn't stop him from casting his spell they follow the same rules as commander so while the card itself is still in play he still controls his "oathbreaker"

Commander Versus used to be my number one show. I'd rush to watch new videos. This time I watched the LRR Canlander and Commander videos and PleasantKenobi's Ragavan Historic Brawl video and then went to sleep, and looked into watching Game Knights before getting to this one. I don't really like PK, he's just informative and I dislike Josh Lee Kwai. Some of your fanbase has been complaining about the reduced quality and entertainment from this channel. I hope they are heeded. Along those lines, please, I'm begging you, get rid of that background music.
Lol at Corey claiming to be a Commander player while still regularly needing staples explained to him, which I typed up before even watching the Fierce Guardianship misplay.

Game 1 was interesting, but not fun to watch. I get that Oathbreaker is supposed to be much faster, but that's not what I, and, based on the comments, many others, come here for. Plus the rules issues ended the game much faster. Oathbreaker was an interesting diversion and I knew they would do it, but I'll be happy to go back to Commander.
This is, I believe, the first time that the gang has not stuck to precedent to determine points. This means there's no chance of predicting how points work based on how they've worked in the past. Yet another reason to potentially drop the series.
Edit: oh Lord, I tried to watch the Game Knights episode. :barf:

The rules misses on this show just get worse and worse. Zulaport triggers on wrong creatures, saying a cost increase effect alters a free spell. If a spell says without paying it's mana cost, cost increases don't work, you apply all relevant increases, then decreases, then alternate effects, so playing without paying would still work
If there is a mandatory additional cost, you must pay that cost. Casting a spell "without paying it's mana cost" does not get around something like Reidane.
Pretty sure you still need to pay the additional cost. Try it in Arena in historic brawl with something like Fires of Invention. The default cost of the card is reduced to zero, but you still need to pay the additional 2 for each time it was cast from the command zone.
The condescension, only to be wrong, is hilarious.
