In Season 2 Episode 7 of Invincible, Anissa shows up and threatens Invincible if he doesn't take over Earth. Cecil tells Mark to lie to her since she is so much stronger but he doesn't listen... but that might have been a good thing. - Zábava
The average Viltrumite is dead, so....shes tens of times stronger than the average.
That's very inaccurate. Vidor, Lucan and Thula were semi advanced viltrumite soldiers and folded mark into oblivion. You can't just say Alissa is "tens of times stronger" without knowing what that means. No viltrumite ever is 10s of times stronger than an average viltrumite. I dont even think thragg is. I believe that that was only said in the comics. Someone who is only watching the show and not reading the comics wouldn't know about that. I only new that because I started reading the comics after the season 2 finale

It's a contradicting fact that Mark & the comics both state that they can't hear more than humans, however their weakness is stated to be sensitivity to sounds humans find mildly irritating or can't even hear, Nolan repeatedly eavesdrops through buildings, as do evil versions of Mark & other Viltrumites to find rebels hiding in them. Good Mark may not be aware he can, but in moments where we've seen his mind on other things he hears shit happening across a city and flies to interfere.
Then there's Nolan's explanation of their flight being like flexing a muscle, and the more trained Viltrumites seeming to have much longer & faster flight times, as well as seeming to eavesdrop on conversations further away. This and the times where it's denied that they have superhearing are almost always Mark saying it and he's known to be significantly weaker in the flying department even with his current display of greater hearing & weakness to sound. He may have less sensitive hearing because he doesn't exercise the muscle in his ear with flight & hearing like other Viltrumites & so may not be able to hear as well. Also since they have a muscle they control in their ear it may not be on permanently, like they can flex to hear better if they know about it & have the strength for it (like how body builders can flex their pecks to make their chest dance, but most people can't because out chest muscles are less developed). After evaluating everything my takeaway is that they have very different inner ear structures with muscles they have more control over allowing them to fly and hear better depending on how developed that muscle is, and Mark doesn't know about it because he's never focused on it when he uses it, his mind is always distracted whenever we see him eavesdrop from a greater distance, his dad clearly never brought it up, and he never really asks any other Viltrumites about it, but all the other Viltrumites seem to actively be able to eavesdrop from miles away & through buildings, except Oliver who was raised similar to Mark & also wouldn't know.

This isn’t why. Mark wasn’t thinking of this possibility when he responded. He wants to stand by his principles and completely be the opposite of whatever his father is even down to saying he’ll do it despite not having the intention of following through. To Mark, any bit of leeway he gives himself to act any bit like his father will lead to him becoming his father, which is why he has such a problem with killing. If he kills one person, his principles will begin to crumble and at that point he believes there is no difference between himself and Nolan.
That's very similar to the reason batman doesn't kill and is equally as flawed.
It's not just a matter of principle though. Yeah, Mark is afraid of becoming like his dad, but he's even more afraid of losing the people he loves. He says as much in the next scene when he explicitly stated how he wanted to kill Anissa for daring to lay a hand on Amber.
And it's the same reason he later crosses the line entirely when it's his mother and brother being threatened.
Is this the same woman who "took advantage" of mark?
This was not a tactical play by Mark, he was not thinking ahead like this lol. He did it because he refuses to play along with the Viltrumites dogma, he’s completely above that
It's not even that. Mark isn't taking a moral stand. He was pissed that Anissa threatened someone he loves and wanted to hurt her. He explicitly says as much in the next scene.

They legit say in the comics, IF YOU READ IT. that viltrumites don’t have super hearing and it is a recurring gag to break tension or just to set the mood of the scene

But as he has replied in other comments IF YOU HAVE READ IT (dont be a prick) they have been making minor changes to the powers of characters so super hearing having not been stated in the anime either could still be possible

I like to think that anissa just takes her orders LITERALLY she doesnt leave anything to interpretation she follows he orders PERIOD. Doesnt take anything into her own hands just does exactly what shes told and she was never told to eliminate him
Mark is still a kid, he isn't an experienced hero or even that experienced with people. An older more experienced hero with Marks powerset could probably have reasoned with Anissa.
People seem to have forgotten that Mark hasn't even had his powers for two months in the show. He just graduated and didn't even make it to Christmas break.

There is the few weeks leading up to his Mars mission from season 1, which took about 2 weeks, then there's the time in-between that, the college stuff and his first major loss to battle beast, after that is the build up to his fight with his father, at the very least he has had his powers for 9 months
Had mark agreed she would've just removed her foot and left. But personally would subconsciously or not deem him a coward for not sticking with his principles when faced with possible death. What respectable viltrumite, especially in their current empire, would fear death? So him not yielding probably left a good impression on her. Unfortunately, me and other comic readers know that mark is better off without anissa's approval or fondness.

Viltrumites have sensitive ears tho. Thats why sound is one of their weaknesses that can completely shut down their powers.

It's not like any high-pitched sound will do. It's a very SPECIFIC frequency. So yeah, it's a type of weakness, but only if the person weaponizing it knows what that frequency is.
By him being so stubborn, it shows his worthy of his viltramide heritage, even if he's completely wrong from the vildramite point of view

It's less about principle or standing up for himself. Mark flat out says in the next scene that he had wanted to kill Anissa for daring to threaten the life of someone he loves.

She wouldn’t have killed him either way there are only like 50 viltrumites left by this point. In the comics even after they blow up viltrum thragg orders to leave mark, Nolan, and Oliver alive in hopes that they will be able to convert them after a few hundred years
It's as invincible was trying to push. She wouldn't ask if she didn't need him. He's calling her bluff, and taking a gamble. She's not figuring out someone is talking into his ear, because then why stop? She needs him, but if she kills him, she'll have nothing, and she can only threaten him so far to force a response before she had to stop or actually kill him. That's a more understandable reason than super hearing
The sensitivity to sound is kinda a self-explanation that they have very good hearing.
Everytime he listens to Cecil, things go wrong, it's just never in a way invincible can know.

I mean he did mate with a Thraxan which is way worse. The only fault is not training him. But Mark can learn how to fight and be more ruthless when fighting Viltrumites and other higher up villains but he hasn’t done either of them. So yeah Mark is at fault too.

They also do not say that Viltrumites do not have heat vision and ice breath, nor the ability to become intangible. It is not out of the question that they have these abilities and simply choose not to ever use them even though it would be really convenient.
If the viltrumites DID have super hearing, it would explain why they are weakened by high frequency sound, like the death angels in “A Quiet Place”, since it means they are more sensitive to the sounds around them. So long periods of high frequency sound could end up killing them.
I believe the reason him standing his ground saved his life is because it showed Anissa that while he may be her enemy now and later that he is honest and does not give up his ideals and beliefs easily which would be admired in viltrimite society as well as physical strength, which also means she could work with Mark later on if need be as she knows he won't lie to get what he wants or buy more time, he is up front and straight forward even to his enemies and she could probably negotiate with him. It's also stated in the episode that she needs him alive on earth and would serve no purpose dead. I haven't read the comics btw this is just me theorizing
