A beautiful and bittersweet song, sung with that golden voice. Don could sing the words of a newspaper article, acapella, and I'd be sitting back and listening with that faraway look in my eyes and a wistful smile.
They don't write songs like this anymore. We will never have another Don Williams and that's a shame

Love Don Williams! Got about 7 of his albums. This song was one of my favs by him. His easy voice fit this perfectly.

Don Williams s always a great one to play. He has such a smooth relaxing voice. I did get to interview him before and I can see where he gets the name "Gentle Giant" as he was so nice. I equate this song to "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys" referring to the line in it saying 'He'd rather give you a song than diamonds and gold' A good reaction Don. I have to comment now and then so you know I am still alive and listening 🙂

Most people only know the popular Don Williams songs like "I believe in you" and "You are my best friend". But there are tons of great songs by Don Williams that true fans of his know. Some of them include:

2. We've got a good fire goin
3. We should be together
4. Senorita
5. Time on my hands
6. Amanda
7. Cup of tea
8. Slowly but surely
9. I see the rainbow in your eyes
And list goes on and on.

Thanks, Don. Loved Don Williams. Your critique is beautiful. As for her being “the prettiest girl in town”, it seems like if one loves someone, they are the prettiest, even if someone else thinks otherwise. If you haven’t yet, check out his song, “We’ve got a good fire going.” It’s the song that got me liking him so much.
It sounded to me like the biggest hurdle the "country boy" had was that the girl he wanted was already married. "She wears a diamond ring" so I guess he's smart enough to understand that even though he might love her, he "ain't gonna marry in the fall, ain't gonna marry in the spring." I would think, therefore, that the fact that he has no gold or silver he has is really not very important.
Diamond ring could mean she's engaged to a wealthy person, hence, he stands no chance especially being just a country boy.
Don opens with the fact that he is in love with a girl that already is wearing someone else's diamond ring, hence, "Ain't gonna marry in the fall; ain't gonna marry in the spring."

This is my favorite Don Williams song. Every time I hear it I think of my crush then girlfriend She was the head cheerleader since 7th grade and I was just a bull & bronc rider plus member of the FFA. So I figured that this country boy had no chance but as fate would have it she chose the country boy and asked me to marry her.
I thought I knew this one but I kept getting Ricky Skaggs song stuck in my head....I think I've only heard this once or twice. Great song obviously since it's Don Williams
