Tai Chi is Sometimes a Prayer

  • It started by going to the ocean to just shoot some Tai Chi play in the early morning, before the beach got crowded. But along the way of editing this video, I found myself thinking only of chaos the world that surrounds us. We had leaders once who inspired us, and pointed the way to a future when prejudice, injustice, poverty, war and intolerance was behind us. And suddenly I realized that Tai Chi is sometimes a prayer in motion - saying with our whole bodies what we are saying in our hearts. Saying to those heroes who have been taken from us that we have not forgotten. Tai Chi teaches us in each generation to pick up the torch, and build a bridge to that future. Yes, we can.
Other martial arts teach us how to hurt each other. Tai Chi teaches us how to heal each other. Other martial arts speak of aggression; Tai Chi speaks of compassion. Other martial arts are rooted in violence; Tai Chi is rooted benevolence. Other martial arts focus on human conflict and combat. But in Tai Chi we fight disease and pain, and we combat depression, aging and death.

You are so inspirational, so compassionate so truly sensational , .. as a human being and all you give to the world. Your classes are beautiful and this particular song for me is poetry in motion. I just loved it and I’m going to watch it and learn the lyrics and flowing movements regularly.
I live in sunny Brisbane, Australia and I love following your flowing classes. Your personality warms my heart and I deeply thank you for your outstanding teaching.
Sending buckets of love and blessings.❤️🙏🥰🤗😊Mellaine

All of your videos and DVDs are great David! Thanks for the prayer meditation and accompanied music. I was 13 when a horrible moment in American history gave initial birth to the idea behind this song. Peace and prayer are what we need, almost more than ever before. After initially starting Tai Chi forms 35 years ago, I can vouch for its ability to help physically and emotionally in the aging process. Health, harmony, and happiness to you David Dorian Ross.

This was in San Francisco in the late 1970's / early 1980's. Since then, I've traveled to China many times to study - and also worked with my teachers here in the US.

Hi Andrew - well we don't currently have an official supplier for the custom wooden stix. One of the members of our instructor community is making them to order... but he just returned from paternity leave (blessed with a new baby girl!) As soon as he gets up and running again I'll be making a video with him to let everyone know where they can get the stix.
In the meantime, a 22" long piece of 3/4 inch pipe should do the trick. That is the intended length of each stick, and it should have just a little weight - but not too much!
