colleen was right. my bio teacher taught us about the evolution of the jaw. wisdom teeth are vestigial structures meaning they used to be used but aren’t needed anymore.
yes!! but she was wrong about that they were for meat, the wisdom teeth have little cusps which are designed for eating plants.

I work in dental. You’re right, a lot of the time “wisdom teeth” become impacted and erupt in a bad position,
become impacted etc. yes the 3rd molars (wisdom teeth) are designed to ‘grind’ our food instead of incise it (front teeth to this).

I’m assuming that I have a super large jaw because none of my dentists and other specialists ever saw a need to remove any of my wisdom teeth. Am I correct with my assumption?
discopumps wisdom teeth become impacted because there is not enough space at the back of our mouths for it to grow straight. Some people are lucky and there mouths are big enough where they do not need to have them removed. Even if you have braces wisdom teeth could mess up the work that braces did this is typically why it’s best to have wisdom teeth removed before having braces. Ultimately you and your doctor could make the best informed decision for you and your needs as everyone is different. I personally has braces on at 14 because of a small overbite and had my wisdom teeth removed at 18 luckily they did not mess up the work the braces did but it could in someone else’s case.

discopumps no problem! I find it strange that they did not take the wisdom teeth out before giving you braces. If they are already really deep I would for sure get the surgery done ASAP because it could just cause more harm in the long run. the longer you wait the more deep it could go and the more difficult it could be to get them out, it is a risky procedure and it could make it more risky if you leave them in because it could cause nerve damage if it gets too deep. Plus it could definitely cause some pain if it gets too deep. I’m curious as to why they said no traveling on a plane for 3 months? Did they mean after the procedure?
@@discopumps if a dentist tells you to take them out, you do it, as soon as you can. Depending on their direction of growth they could cause other teeth to break by growing sideways into them.
I had no restriction on flying after, that may be bad advice unless you have another medical issue to cause that to be needed. Like a blood clotting issue in the rest of your body? Ask them if they advise that to every client or just you. If it's every client, they are weird and elsewhere dentists do not advise that. You can make your own choice on that. But if it's only advice for you because (insert medical reason) then you should ask your medical doctor if it's accurate advice.

The part about wisdom teeth not being needed due to jaw size is correct. The part that they were used for meats is not. Our pointier incisor (canine) teeth are used for meats whereas the molars (like wisdom teeth) are used for vegetation.

Okay, question for you; I thought it was like because dental care wasn't great and people would loose teeth and so they needed more later in life. Is there any validity to that?
lottie greer Not really, like Colleen was saying the “caveman” used the teeth for chewing and grinding raw meat and leaves and so because the jaw was bigger then they have more room for more molars for this purpose and if they lost a tooth the extra molar was also good to have because they needed them. We don’t need the wisdom teeth any longer nor do our current jaws have room for them. I hope that made sense. 😊

sweetcanada17 LoL you are one of the few and special people that have room for them. If the teeth are fully erupted and I have seen patients that have room for them, we then suggest not to remove unless needed for example they are causing pain and/or if the patient is having trouble keeping them clean.

Actually, they're all right. I just googled it and every website said basically the same thing. Anthropologists believe that we had wisdom teeth to chew up coarse foods like raw meat leaves and nuts. They were basically what they used instead of silverware.
