Format zaten değişecekti doğru ,sayı arttırılacağı da bildirilmişti ; ama arkadaşın yanlış ifade ettiği Manchester United'ın elenmesiyle ; Manchester United ve onun gibi sıralamada başa oynayan takımların bize eleme oynatmayın diye başvurmalarıydı. Bu sebeple ilave bir değişikliğe gidilerek sıralamada ilk sekizde bulunan takımların direkt gruplara kalması kararlaştırıldı. Dört gruba ilk ki olarak dağıtıldı , kalan 8 takım ise eleme oynayarak gruplara kaldı.

O müthiş maçı Old Trafford stadyumunda canlı izlemiştim ve şimdi yine görünce tüylerim diken diken oldu. Ne büyük mutluluktu o gün benim için, inanılır gibi değildi.

Looking at Manchester United squad, you can take any player and make todays Manchester United contender for the premiere league. For non British fans, same goes for that Galatasaray squad except for maybe Hayretin (goalkeeper). Arguably, both were top squads for both teams (easily top 2-3 for both)history, fighting for the top 8 in Champions league (back then only 8 teams total were in groups).

What a disaster of a result this was for United, especially after leading 2-0. We lost the tie from this, forget the 0-0 in Turkey.
You wouldn't happen to know about the 3 foreign player rule would you....I wanted to find out whether it was a thing where you had to name the 3 you will be choosing for the whole tournament and can't replace others or whether you could pick 3 on the matchday but just as long as it's no more than 3.....also it's harsh counting Ireland as foreign as many Irish live in England even before there were near as many foriegners living in England as there are these days and many Irish have been in many English club's youth teams so ManUtd couldn't even play both Irwin & Keane without leaving out Schmeichel or Cantona..... Let alone Kanchelskis etc...
Technically Northern Ireland is overseas yet ManUtd would've been able to play for example Keith Gillespie around that time and he wouldn't be counted as an overseas player I can imagine.
Arsenal would've been screwed in Europe in 2000's...they struggled enough with a talanted team of overseas players.
@@FootkerSnookball as far as I remember, it was five overseas and assimilated players in the competition squad, but I can't recall 100%. This meant that even Scottish, Welsh and NI players were a part of this rule (max three overseas, two assimilated). That meant in this match that Fergie dropped Hughes as one of those players, which surprised a lot of people, as it left us toothless in attack.
I remember the following season when we played Barcelona in the Nou Camp and got hammered 4-0. Gary Walsh went in goal instead of Big Peter. Apparently even Walsh was shocked to be picked ahead of him. It was a hindrance, but the majority of European leagues were completely dominated by home players, so it was done to balance things out against the PL. Thankfully they got rid of it in '96 I believe.
@@Nightopian1982Hughes did play if you pause right at the start of the video....but I suppose McClair couldn't (I know that Hughes was more of a key player but it would've been better for rotation purposes to play certain players for certain games or not overuse players etc...Hughes played 54 games that season way more than McClair and even if Hughes was going to play that amount it would've been better that they included CL games in latter stages rather than say the LeagueCup, he played in 8 LeagueCup games. If ManUtd would've got past that CL round the format then would've given them a group stage next round, then the SF & final were single match ties).
Yeah I typed in to find out about it but it didn't come up with what I was looking for at first but I just found through typing it in a different way I now read something that says if they're not home grown from English or Welsh systems they were classed as foriegn hence no McClair here from Scotland and also having to use Sharpe as a left-back and having the likes of Phelan on the bench instead of McClair or Kanchelskis etc...
Yeah I'm aware GaryWalsh was in goal that 94/95 Barca away game I mention it when people try to mock ManUtd for it.
ManUtd often did well vs Barca when they could field the right team it was only CL final 2011 where ManUtd were well beaten by them under Ferguson in either CupWinnersCup or ChampionsLeague.
@@FootkerSnookball sorry I should have been clearer. Hughes wasn't selected for the second leg in Turkey, even though he played in this one. We missed him to be honest, because the Turks basically just wound Cantona up in the second leg, and that just completely nullified him. Without another striker we were no real threat (although let's face it, Lee Sharpe's 'goal' at the beginning of the game that was disallowed for offside should have stood!), and the assimilated/foreign rule made life very awkward for us back then (Schmiechel, Irwin, Giggs, Keane, Kanchelskis, Hughes, McClair and Cantona were all starting 11 players, aside from McClair, so you're dropping three of the overseas players, and two assimilated ones from the above). It makes it sound like sour grapes to some people, but I always thought we were robbed in that CL tie. The Turkish fans and police behaved appallingly towards our fans and players, the Galatasaray players and coaches wasted loads of time, it was a bit of a joke really. It was the first leg that blew it though, because it was inevitable that in Turkey they'd disrupt play and get their fans to cause problems. The fans were awful though, they threatened Paul Parker when they arrived in the airport, and the police attacked our players after the game. Disgusting.
