Useful video. I live in one of these, the floor of my master bath is full of holes. The only thing that keeps me from falling through is the linoleum, lol.
Good video. Nice to have you explain things well as you went along. I like to learn new things and this will help me when I buy a mobile home down in Florida to escape these cold New England Winters !!!
Just keep in mind that all repairs won't be the same, the last mobile home we repaired the water heater caught on fire and burnt some of the floor joists next to the bathroom, and we had to replace a lot of it. Thanks for watching.
I'm doing the same repair but after doing some research I've decided to do plywood for subfloor, concrete backer board and tiles. I know it will add a few inches from the original but it should be perfect as soon I finish. Love that credits!
Considering this was my first vinyl floor I have installed, and I did not pick out the material for the job the owners did. Also vinyl was just hitting the market and not much of a selection at the time. Now that China has caught on it is more available in all kinds of patterns, designs, etc. Also I have installed at least 50,000 square feet of it since this video was made, I have seen good and bad examples of it. My goal for the video was the pressure treaded plywood on the bathroom floor. Thanks for watching.
I have done the same type of repairs on my parents mobile home over the years, 3/4" plywood down on top of the old particle board. Now that I have taken ownership of the place after both have passed, I have to fix it the right way before I move in. By "right way" I mean removing the old particle board, sistering in perimeter boards, leveling the floor, and putting 3/4" plywood down--then whatever finished floor we want. But yes, this is a strong fix, but doesn't get rid of the moisture damage or mold.
Yeah mold can be a bad thing; just keep in mind disturbing mold and making it air born is worse than just burying it. Make sure you paint it with Kilz Original before you do anything, even if you tear it out. Thanks for watching.
Looks like the leak is actually coming from the bathroom window. Trailers are also known to having alot of leaking damage from the windows, and if the overhang on roof is not enough the water gets trapped between the siding and the wall.
Yes these things are horrible for water damage, My Uncle Jack replaced all the windows with new ones about 3 years ago before the last renter. He also replace all the wood around the toilet back then, which was still good, all it takes is a little hole or crack in the linoleum for water to find it's way to the underlayment which was this last problem. Thanks for watching.
Always floor first because while prying and cutting old flooring you usually damage bottom of walls here and there. You can always save time and money by half paneling or base boards if you do.
In most cases I do, however when you let the home owner do their own shopping for material and tell them what you need, they always look to the experts at the store for advise; the boxes say nothing needed for under-lament so they don't buy it. We did caulk everything just hard to see against white trim. Making these videos and trying to stay focused on your job is already challenging, what's even worse is the editing before you post them to CZcams, can't get all the details, I figured people would be smart enough sometimes to figure some stuff out themselves, but I guess not. Thanks for watching.
@@TheBlueCollarPreacher Getting ready to do a vinyl floor myself and you are correct I triple checked and vinyl requires no vapor barrier unlike wood laminates which do.. Did you just do an over lay the old floor? @@TheElectronMan Thanks for the comment, this floor was still solid, my Uncle fixed the bad spot by the toilet a few years ago, it was just getting soft by the sink and they wanted me to save it before it got worse. I usually like to put tar paper down first just to make better surface to lay on. Thanks for watching 😊
So how long would it take me to repair water damage floor in a small mobile home bathroom? Do I have to leave my house to fix it? How much does it really cost?
That all depend on how bad your floor is, and how much material is at the time you begin to work on it. I have seen plywood go up 300% in the last 3 months due to Covid-19. Also depends on where you live, winter is a bad time to do it, but at the same time plywood could still rise in price because hurricane season also plays a factor in cost of plywood. Hope this can help also thanks for watching.
@@TheBlueCollarPreacher yeah my bathroom has water damage and it's only at the edge of the tub...I hope it's not bad but I'm renting honestly and haven't bothered my landlord in 3 years literally and never even knew that the shower head was leaking behind the wall...so it got water damage I'm just scared he's going to be pissed I'm hopefully telling him tomorrow I just realized it and feel like straight crap about it and honestly want to offer him money but people have told me if it's not my fault I shouldn't have to pay for it...
It all depends on when you buy your plywood. Plywood goes up and down drastically during hurricane season, also I would put the green pressure treated stuff around the front and back doors, and in the bathroom it cost about twice as much as regular plywood, and just use regular plywood every wheres else. the vinyl flooring ranges from around $1.50-3.00 sqft. (example 14x70=980sqft divide that by 32 4X8 sheet ply = 31 sheets plywood say it costs around $10.00 sheet that would be 310.00 in Plywood, and lets take vinyl @ $2.00 sqft X's that by 980 =$1960.00 vinyl. 310+1960=$2270.00+labor if you have someone do it, and that's the whole Trailer house. Did you just lay plywood over the rotting floor? Looks great but the particle board will eventually swell and warp the floor. If you’re lucky it wont. This is what Im dealing with now. It is a nightmare.
You should always take old out but if you don't and you decide to do 4ft sections at a time. You can match overlay by running 1/2 plywood and or 1/8 paneling strips along floor joists to match height . Subfloor should always run perpendicular end to end and meet in center of floor joist and every other sheet staggered not ending at the same joist. Where sheets meet parallel to one another use plywood 1/2 to 3/4 stitches at least 3" wide from joist to joist and 1-5/8 drywall screws about 1-1/2 inches apart about 3/4 inch from the sides of where they meer and join. This will keep your floor, tight, solid, without any movement or creaking.
My uncle put 1/2'' under lament thru out the whole trailer house about 20 years ago when my cousin still lived in it.
