  • Prayer isn’t just another good thing to do; it’s absolutely necessary if we want to know God’s will in our lives and draw closer to him. The trouble is finding the time and willpower to pray. In this video, Fr. Mike Schmitz suggests being a bit more intentional in our prayer lives, asking these four simple questions: When should I pray, where should I pray, what should I pray, and why should I pray?

I am a Catholic convert from islam so praying was an issue to me because I did not really want to pray like a muslim no more. In my opinion Rosary is the best. I either listen to gregorian chant while praying it or I play a full video of a Rosary prayer with songs etc on youtube and go along with it. It is remarkable. It almost takes me to another dimension. I can almost feel the warm hands of Jesus hugging me

Monique Ocampo Do you ever pray from your heart? God doesn't want memorized super religious prayers. Prayer is a conversation or communication with God. He wants us to pray from our hearts and talk to him like we would talk to our earthly father. You can ask him about anything or vent out your feelings to him. You don't have to only pray out memorized bible verses to him. He wants a relationship, not a "religion".

Catholics do, of course, pray from the heart. In addition, praying liturgical prayer and devotional prayers have tremendous spiritual benefit. First, these prayers are either from Scripture, or from the greatest minds and souls who have ever walked the earth who have gone before us. They are theologically correct as well as spiritually rich. Thank you, Father Mike, for your excellent tips.

I can be driving down the road on the way to work and I call out to The Lord , I can be throwing a ball with my dogs and marveling at their love for me and I smile ... I know it is you Lord that gives me joy . I cry all the time and look to the sky and marvel at the flowers on my apple tree . I lift my heart to God and cry in thanks ... I awake every morning and the first thing that crosses my mind . .. You are here with me .Every night before I sleep .. I give thanks .. I am a sinner and I want to be drawn closer to You .. .. When I see the abilities you have given me .. I give thanks all day .. I have wondered in amazement why I can still walk when I was told I wouldn't .. It was you Lord that lifted me and gave me comfort , When my parents died ... You Comforted me and gave me to a beautiful day .. I smiled when I should have hurt and all The Glory is Yours . .. Me too. I had tried numerous church hopping for years and none of them compares to Catholism. Catholic church has answered many important questions that other denominations failed to answer for me. Plus, when I was faced with a major life crisis a decade ago and contemplating suicide, I called other churches for counseling, none of them even gave me a minute to listen to me or offered to pray with me. It was a catholic priest who showed me compassion, counseled me with his wise words and prayed with me that offered great relief and changed my mind about taking my own life.

It takes a while to understand that we pray with Mary, we do not pray to her, nor do we pray 'to' statues. I have slowly had all those old 'protestant' notions demolished. Now I go to Roman Catholic churches, and I am beginning to feel the full richness of it. I told our priest that I had met and come from the same town as the new Archbishop of York, and suggested we should include him in our prayers. He said that was a good idea, and added, 'and we can pray for his conversion'.

My husband became Catholic 2 years ago this Easter. We started praying the rosary together every night (usually) before bed since a few weeks before his entrance into the Church. We use a booklet called praying the rosary without distraction and love it. We also belong to the rosary confraternity. I'm not trying to boast, truly. It took me 49 years to begin praying daily, not just at meals and I'm so glad we do it together. It's our thing. And our cat comes running from wherever she is in the house when she hears us praying and jumps on our bed to sit between us. When we have company over and it's about the time we normally pray, she starts meowing loudly, climbs on us and pesters us till we stop and pray the rosary. Strange but true.

You said something that reached me. We can't be the Saints we're meant to be without prayer. I pray when I'm in dire need but I have never incorporated it into my daily life. I'm only taking on the load when I have burdens when I need but I don't deliver in my spirit the same dedication to God. I don't walk properly in God's path because We aren't in sync with each other. From this day forward to the End of my days I will make a time for Prayer. Thank you so much. It sounds hokey and corny... but really this did open my eyes. Like this was what I needed to hear.

Family prayer time: before dinner 5 -6p
Where: living room is best, but sometimes during a walk outside in our neighborhood, bedroom if baby is fussy. Also once a week vespers or adoration chapel as a family (before covid)
What: Rosary, Litany, and seasonal prayers like consecrations to mary or st. joseph, or novenas, etc
Why: God is the glue to our family. It fosters peace in our home, we fight less, we apologize sooner, and mostly, because we get to have time with our lord. We have witnessed many miracles thru prayer!
Note: we didnt just start at this level. It's taken 10years to establish this routine. Start with 15min a day. Then build upon it. Our kids are 17, 8, 6, & 1.....they all hang in there some days better than others. It is our guaranteed family time each night.

Great tips. I’m an easily distracted prayer. I go in my morning walks and pray the rosary and find my mind wandering to random things midway thru. I’m and constantly “scolding myself” to refocus. I enjoy praying the rosary. I found the tip on “why do I want to pray?” Very helpful. Most of the time it isn’t to ask God for help. Sometimes I pray just out of gratitude. Thank you for this video!

Yes, praying the Rosary can focus your mind and Im able to sleep so much better. Im also one of the people that is always praying to God about something. Btw...being a night person is not a choice, there are medical issues that cause someone to sleep easily during the day and be up all night. Im one of those night people, but I do lay down at specific times and play my Rosary app and pray with it. Sometimes I fall asleep, sometimes I read a book, because sleep will not come. Sometimes I just reflect and enjoy the peaceful silence and trust me, most nights at 4am I am crying and praying out to God for sleep.

As a retired 68 year old I have the luxury of time and each Lent as I add a habit to draw closer to God, I am blessed that I have the time to add that practice or prayer to my daily routine.
Sometimes I can pray a bigger block of time, sometimes I need to babysit and need to break the blocks up into smaller cubes.
With time the peace and joy of union with God has made my former ‘scheduled appointments’ something to eagerly anticipate and joyfully participate.
It took time and it took perseverance but if you are faithful, God will multiply your time and as you show up you will see His face and feel His hugs.
Now when He wakes me at 3 am to pray, it is a peaceful time that passes all understanding. I know that someone out there needs my prayer.
Blessings to all who seek His face, not just His hands.

If we’re praying for a specific answer and we don’t get the response we are looking for, our prayer was not a failure.
My favorite song by Garth Brooks is called Unanswered Prayers. Part of the lyrics say, “Remember when you’re talking to the Man Upstairs that just because He don’t answer doesn’t mean He don’t care. Some of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.”
This rings true for me. My husband and I wanted children and we prayed and prayed. But God didn’t send us any children. Instead, He sent us other people’s children. We have 5 godchildren. I have two great-nieces and seven great-nephews. I taught Religious Education for three years. And I was a public school teacher for eight years, two as a substitute and six as a full time teacher. So God blessed us abundantly with children. They were just other people’s children.
I am a better godmother, teacher, and great-aunt because I don’t have my own children.

Eddie Hinote I was raised Protestant and fell away. Recently, I've felt God's call.
I asked GOD to reveal the truth about Catholicism to me, then opened the Bible at a random spot. I immediately saw -"they are God's people. He made them His children and revealed His Glory to them. He made His covenants with them and gave them the law. they have the true worship. they have received God's promises. they are descended from the famous Hebrew ancestors and Christ as a human being belongs to their race. May God who rules over all be praised forever! Amen.
You could've knocked me over with a feather. this was after going to a Catholic Church for Mass. I decided to go after much thought..years..I went because of what Jesus said about the rock plus the Catholic Church is being denigrated so badly, which would NEVER happen were they not real and true.. seems pretty basic to me. And since, I've been getting harassed, really badly. Though I have never been closer to God.
I hope to take the Rite of Initiation and be baptised, soon.

Let them know that in the rosary we use three main prayers, the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory Be.
The Our Father is literally the words Jesus told his apostles when they asked him "Lord how are we to pray?" And Jesus himself spoke this prayer, teaching us these are the things to pray for, the things spoken of in the prayer. The Our Father was both an example of prayer as well as a perfectly good prayer for us to pray, exactly as Jesus prayed it.
The Hail Mary is again words from scripture (Gospel of Luke) as spoken from two sources, the Angel Gabriel and I believe it was Elyzabeth, Mary's cousin. Praying the Hail Mary is a greeting to Mary, an affirmation of her important role in Christs life, and a beautiful plea for her birthday to pray for us who yearn to live and be more like her son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Glory Be is just a very simple prayer of giving glory to our amazing Triune God.
That's what I would say to anyone who believes the rosary is without meaning.

God has blessed me in so many ways and the primary Where fir my prayers is my church 4 blocks away. We pray the Rosary and the Divine Mercy every single day at 11:00. It is rare that any of us miss a day. God is Good!

One of my favorite Fr. Mike videos. It helped me put my prayer life in perspective. Thanks Father for always making me smile and/or laugh, "get back on that kneeler & pray Christian." 😂 I sure hope that I meet you in person some day. God bless!

Don't give up father. God is with you. He loves you. And he needs you! Maybe for much more later, but he needs you most definitely. He loves you.

Never give up on God because he never gives up on you. One of my favorite stories that my mom told me a long time ago was that there was a man who didn’t know how to pray. Every day he would go to church and simply say “God, I’m here”. He did this all his life. Legend says when he died, God came to him and said “Jose, I am here” 😭 I ALWAYS look back on that. I always make the sign of the cross as soon as I wake up (before getting out of bed) and while in bed ready to sleep. I have the habit of praying throughout the day. Whether it is a formal Hail Mary or an Our Father or simply talking to God like he’s a friend. There are times when I’m driving to/from work listening to music and I feel the urge to talk to God or pray.

Being older, I initially found Father's rapidity of speech really difficult I questioned if this was really who he was or he is clever and brilliant enough to know that his style will reach the younger generation. Quick fast speech and movement. When it dawned on me how often my mind jumps during prayer (I attribute this to the modern technology most are acclimated to) I decided to see his tips on praying. Big help...he resonated with what I go through rather than my trying to prove to be a serene focused quiet person who truly goes into prayer.....thanks Father Mike. You are a gift!!

It's rare that someone talking on such a serious subject can make me laugh. But it will stick with me. Get back on that kneeler and pray Christian!

I live by my Rosary. I pray before I perform music singing/guitar. I wear my rosary all the time, So when i feel moved to pray i have it with me. it's the most gentle selfless way to prayer for my self, I usually pray for others well being. I feel my connection this way to the Holy Mother to God to jesus. Fr mike please Do a video on praying the rosary God Bless. Caroline
