  • After fitting the SC Project muffler, it was time to take it on a little test ride.
Everything was going fine, until the front tyre rapidly deflated doing 100kmh, with the tyre off the bead it was not easy trying to get air back in and I ended up riding it into the closest town buying some ratchet straps to try and pull the bead onto the rim to inflate, but air was still leaking out.
Ended up riding home 20km just on the tyre. Good job on the #motoz dualventure tyre though, it managed to get me home.
While I have the tyre off and looking at the damage, another package has arrived which will help the next part of tuning.

My Desert-X wheel failed on the ride home from purchasing it....at least that is the only time it hit something less than a smooth road until I discovered the wheel crack. Ducati does not stand behind their wheels, and they are hella expensive to replace ($2971 CAD!). I would not recommend a Desert-X to anyone for this reason.

It really does depend what you hit, my hit was about 75/80kmh to cause my damage. Yes replacements from dealers are expensive. Thats why you go good aftermarket.

@@koalakonceptswhen I think about how I bashed my Africa Twin through the bush for years without wheel damage, it is completely unacceptable that I would break a wheel on the Desert-X so easily. Being required to drop another $3-4K CAD on wheels to fix an obvious design flaw on a very expensive bike is also absurd.

@brucerossonthetube Yep completely different wheel setups. I knew it would be a problem at some point, especially offroad. So I accounted for that. Unfortunately every manufacturer has a flaw somewhere.

Bro that sucks. The wheels are what I’m most worried about on big trips. I know you said you thought you hit a pothole but the wheels are famous for being poorly cast. Seems like a metallurgy issue and the part numbers have changed meaning Ducati Australia know what’s up.
What wheels have you been looking at? I’ve got my eye on a front from Germany for 2k delivered. Might be where my next spend goes.
That wheel repair looked pretty good but it was always going to be on borrowed time. Such a shame.

Yeah all ducati have to do is sell the outer rim as a replacement part but they dont. Have to buy the whole rim. My new rims actually arrive this Wed. Been waiting 3 months for them. They are the Bartubeless wheels. So still tubeless, which is what I was after, they use Excel rims but create their own centres and tubeless system.

Yeah sweet, I’m not overly fazed about running tubeless. For peace of mind I’ll be running a tube in the front and carrying a spare for the rear when I do the Simpson Desert.
That decat and muffler combo is dope. Are you worried about warranty stuff when you get it tuned?

Yeah I carry a tube on big trips now. I have it tuned now (thats next weeks video) it really just needed a better fuel map. Its stand alone so doesn't affect the warranty.

When are you off on your Simpson trip?

Okay that’s good to know warranty wise. I’m really hoping to get the Simpson done this year but with it closing in December the window is getting narrow as.
Want to get my spring in, and then boost up there and knock it over. Can you be tempted big fella?
