Agust D/SUGA is ranked as one of the most influential producers and songwriters in South Korea, who won multiple awards over the past few years, including best producer. He debuted at #9 on Billboard Hot 100 Songwriters Chart. He became the first male soloist in history to have a song and album reach No.1 on iTunes in 100 countries each. He is ranked Billboard's Top solo Korean Album Artist of 2020. His mixtape "D-2" debuted at #11 on Billboard 200. And there is just a few of his achievements.
He has two self-produced mixtapes: "Agust D" (2016) and "D-2" (2020), which broke several records on music charts worldwide. He uses his platform to talk about important topics and most of his lyrics touch such subjects as mental health, social issues, the contrast between dreams and reality, etc.
To put this simply, in this MV king is his past self. The other one is his present self. So he shot his past self. "Daechwita" is a genre of Korean traditional military music, which was played to announce the arrival of king.
He also produces/writes a lot of songs for BTS as well as for other top artists.
I recommend you to check out

BTS - "Interlude: Shadow" MV (it is his solo song).

You're right about how Suga (and other celebs) can see fame is not all it's cracked up to be. In his song "People" from this same album, he raps "My ordinary became your special; your ordinary became my special" - Suga elaborated on that in an interview that going to a movie with friends, something we find so everyday & ordinary, is special to him because it's so hard to do now - while traveling all over the world is special to us, but to him now it's just ordinary life...... And Happy Birthday from Texas!

  • @madz2474
    @madz2474 Před 3 lety +68

Yeah he’s essentially playing different roles but through one individual: one being a cruel king who strives for power and the other representing the common people. But that scar he has is a symbol of his trials and strength, which is actually historically forbidden to have any marks on one’s skin in the position as king in Korea. It shows how much he was willing to strive for what he wanted even as he faced obstacles. You see he kills the king, aka his alter ego/harsh persona whatever you may interpret it as, which can be seen as putting a damper to that personality if it gets out of hand...man there’s a lot to unpack in that mv, and a lot up your interpretation but thanks for the reaction y’all. Also daechwita is the music you would hear when the king made an entrance and he sampled that traditional music throughout

  • @Honey-je4pr
    @Honey-je4pr Před 3 lety +22

So I love to tell this detail to music nerds like you guys: In his first single, titled Agust D like his solo stage name, the beat is taken from a military march. Suga takes common military phrases and puts a new spin on them, essentially saying he's gonna march to the beat of his own drum. Then, in this one, he upgrades the music literally shows how he's gone up in the world, from common soldier to king.
But in this song and his other works, Suga contemplates his "greed" being a chain around his neck - making him a monster. He references delusional and power-hungry kings in Daechwita, basically saying that if you get too greedy, you become your own downfall. Suga kills his old self, saying he wants to remain true to himself and not become a slave to his own greed. I think it's such a powerful message, especially when comparing it to Agust D from several years ago, where he was still power-hungry and still working his way to the top and trying to prove himself (now he doesn't need to). I thought you guys might find all this interesting!

This video was Suga's idea, as every professional who respects himself was aware of every detail, meeting with the production team, he even learned the sword dance in just 2 days. To top it all, Suga is a descendant of the famous and important Min clan or better known as Yeoheung Min who belongs to the Joseon dynasty and one of the Empresses of this family is Myeongseong. The Yeoheung Min were rulers in 242 senior positions within the royal court and 4 queens were also in power. Suga aka Agust D is a well known producer and songwriter in south korea, he even won a award. Suga released their second mixtape 'D-2' and his songs quickly positioned in the most important places of music charts worldwide. Suga has become the first South Korean solo artist to enter both the Billboard album and single charts at the same time, following the release of the "mixtape" "D-2" with his title track "Daechwita" Inspired by traditional Korean music used for the military march and royal parade, "Daechwita" combines the sound of traditional Korean wind and percussion instruments with the hiphop musical sub-genre "trap". Agust D 2, Suga's second mixtape has received a lot of support from fans and his music has positioned himself in the best places on the music charts, breaking several records. Suga's second solo record material, 'D-2' is in seventh place on the official album chart in the UK, the country's music list is considered one of the most important in the world. Suga has become the first South Korean soloist to have record material on the UK music chart and place his work in such an important position on the chart. Suga is one of the most influential Korean producers and musicians in the music industry. entertainment, thanks to the talent of the rapper from the company Big Hit, many artists seek to collaborate with him.

There's a theory that the girl holding the box with the car key represents ARMY holding the key to BTS success, in other words providing the vehicle which transported them to their current status. Also the sign above their heads in that scene is a quote from Confucius that translates as "classical scholar doesn't value treasure". According to Confucius what does the scholar value instead? Loyalty and faithfulness. If this doesn't describe the BTS/ARMY bond I don't know what does. The quote might also offer the key to the MV. Yoongi is ridding himself of the greed, mentioned in "Magic Shop", that drove him to measure his talent against others and to desire material things as proof of his success..

Daechwita' is a genre of Korean traditional music consisting of royal military music played by wind and percussion instruments, generally performed while marching in parade. 'Daechwita' is usually played when a king goes out, when they return from a war with victory, or when a guard changing ceremony is held at a royal palace in Joseon Dynasty from 14th century through 19th century, the old Korea.
All the references used in this MV is from Joseon Dynasty, the old Korea, from 14th century throughout 19th century. The architecture of a royal palace and market streets, traditional fashion style such as King's outfits and commoner's clothes in the market streets, traditional musical instruments, and the way Suga is beheaded by the executioner, etc., are all Korean traditional cultural references originated from Joseon Dynasty from 14th through 19th century.

In general, he talks a lot about how scared he is of their success in his solo music. It's kind of interesting how almost half of his songs are sassy and have "I made it, I am a king" kind of vibe and the other half is like "I am tired and lonely. Look up Agustd by Agust d, it the first video he did under his solo work, and immediately after watch the follow up video of give it to me.

I love the way you guys are breaking down not only the lyrics but also the storyline! I can’t wait to watch you guys react to their crazy “in universe” storyline (the B.U. Aka the Bangtan Universe) It’s going to be wild! But also, I got super excited for a millisecond there because I thought you guys were gonna listen to Rap-Line’s “Ddaeng” at the end there but perhaps another day. If you enjoy their flows and rhyme schemes, you really should check out “Ddaeng” and “Baepsae”. They are some of my favorite rap heavy songs! Thanks for the reactions; it’s always so exciting to watch new listeners discover BTS and their amazing discography. 💜 I’ll be along for your journey~ *subscribed*

Yes... You have to listen Tear and Ugh ..
That is Rap melancholic and control anger...
Then... Persona, Shadow and Ego... That series of Map of the soul made Army no matter waht ages will read the psychological book by Carl Jung... Ha ha ha ha.... 💜💜💜💜
Rap not only Bar... But issues, educate, mostly knowledge about culture and human behaviour....
Look out their lyrics in song and rap... So you can realize why Army so much in love with them....
Not only the look, styles, HD-MV... But the story line... As you can see in blood sweat and tears, that Icarus wing
Dynosius God of wine... Dope to introduce them as hardworker... Etc etc..
You come to BTS not just enjoy the music... Their pure loves to other, their goofness... Their savage and also cute
    Welcome to the rabbit hole...😉😉
    And.... Happy B'day,.. B'happy, B'healtth, B'heal, B'live, B'lieve... GBU abudantly.... 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

    First, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎉
Second, please check out Black Swan, ON, Spring Day (plus theory video), Shadow (Suga), Serendipity (Jimin), Dope, Fire, Fake Love and Blood, Sweat and Tears. This is just a jumping off place too!!!! 😎
Third, I LOVE this song. But from Yoongi, I also LOVE: The Last, First Love, and Shadow. Yoongi can just express what's inside of him so well. (Yoongi is one out of two bias. But I do truly love all of them).
My other bias is Jimin. I cannot get enough of Serendipity, Filter and Lie. Serendipity has a MV and there are live performances of Filter and Serendipity that are amazing.
I love RM's "Do You" and "Joke" and I love "Airplane" and "Chicken Noodle Soup" by J-Hope. You can find them on SoundCloud for free.
Check out MMAs 2020 and 2019 and Tiny Desk Concert for live performances. Jimmy Fallon week is also pretty stellar!
Enjoy the journey down the rabbit hole. It's a long fall, but truly worth it!
    Peace! ✌💜😎
P.S. Love your channel so far! Looking forward to more!

Let me clue you in on the brilliance of the "flexing" bar!
He's right, of course. He has no need to flex in the traditional ways, his skills and fame speak for themselves.
But the way he delivered this was SO BRUTAL!
That entire part is him showing how bad other rappers are, not even giving him any real competition (thus eliminating any and all reason to flex).
He switches from his own, fast spitting and complex flows to rapping just a couple of words.
And he "rhymes" the same simple word with itself, repeating it twice (the English translation did a good job by serving up the deliberately awkward "I got none/I don't need one", and who says "one" about flexing?).
So, he's basically saying "Look, this is how bad you are at rapping, so why would I show off like you're competition?"

The black dressed people in the palace yard are the Mad King's courtiers, ministers etc. (remember how much king honored them for their work for his country in the beginning? Literally hopping on to stand on one of them..? Shoes are dirty in Korean culture.
The courtiers starting to mosh with The Peasant joining in his coup - even though we know how Mad King treats people he doesn't like (the MV started with rows of people decapitated in the yard)

    Suggestions for Live Performances:
Airplane pt. 2; Born Singer; 2020 MMA performance,(actually any MMA or MAMA performance); Cypher Medley; Ddaeng; Outro: Tear; Black Swan (on James Corden Show); Magic Shop; Truth Untold (this is all a mix to showcase their vocals, dancing and rapping). Also for solo performances try Jimin's Serendipity; V's Stigma; Jungkook's Euphoria

Suga is my Bts bias. I never liked American rap, too degrading to women. Suga made me a Rap lover. I watch this video at least twice EVERY week. He is anazing
!!! I am 69 F living in NY. I found this group during lockdown last year and have watched most of their videos. You should watch the introduction to Bts videos to learn their back story and you will understand. Thay went through alot.

Yo if you wanna see more of the rapline... you should check out the trilogy of intros they did for map of the soul.
    Intro Persona by rm
Persona is the social mask we wear when we interact with the world.
    Interlude shadow by suga
Shadows are our suppressed fears and negative parts we hide from the world
    Outro ego by jhope
Ego is our identity. The ego develops when both Persona and shadow are integrated.
