    the truth about felt quality, 😉
    expensive and well respected, prestigious labels can sometimes be mask for absolute crap quality,
    surprise surprise!
    The Gucci hat u just purchased at the Gucci shop on Madison Avenue for $1500
    was made from the absolute cheapest, lowest quality wool felt possibly found with a “made in USA” label on it, equal to Chinese garbage,worth about $35-45 and equal to the stuff u see in the average discount store.
    Nobody knows the difference between worthless felt and $1500 felt! Why not?? People really want the bragging rights and the label, they care about the looks,that’s it, quality is irrelevant..not even an issue when they choose a hat, it’s about the bottom line and the cosmetic looks are important, but not that much..it’ll have to be passable in the looks dept, people will assume it’s cool,because of the label.
    often "designer" labeled hats are the worst culprits, the biggest names approach small companies to make hats for them, often they don’t care who makes it, as long as it doesn’t say China,it’ll sell as Gucci,or whoever..
    use your eyes,look at the hat for sale and ask questions
    if u see anything fishy, brims not snapping, or floppy felt..
    just pass. Buy a bag,shoes, or a watch from them, not a hat.
    even the finest brands have Chinese made goods too, so if a price is cheaper than expected,ask about country of origin

      Hey buddy, if u like my Zappa Roxy SG, u should see this clip. czcams.com/video/8qyklQFtMRo/video.html
      From frank hannon, my buddy from Tesla who gifted that guitar to me, he used it live that year a bit, this is a beautiful solo he took w it in 2013, the year the guitar was born, watch at around 2:30 when the solo begins. This guitar is very,very special to me because he’s an old friend from 30 years ago, and we reunited, when we met again, we spoke on the phone, I told him how much I loved Zappa,and how he needs to check him out,,I’d also mentioned how I was searching for the perfect 73 Les Paul sunburst, I’d been eBaying for a year and a half, searching, that was before I found my sunburst Les Paul, the next thing I know, he shows up at my store w that guitar, “it’s yours, Kev”I almost cried right there, I remember jamming w him after,and I was so choked up and emotional, my hands were shaking,
      Nobody ever did anything like that for me before, I remember thinking,”I can jam better than this,frank!.. I’m just so nervous from being gifted this incredibly rare guitar!.i could barely jam, I felt like crying from happiness” it was one of the great moment in my life, like when my son was born, or meeting my wife, or the time I met Jerry Garcia..
      that moment left such a strong imprint on my memory,.watching this solo brings it back to me czcams.com/video/8qyklQFtMRo/video.html

    I have a Biltmore Governor series - what I think is Canadian wool hat. Thick felt with raw edge. Looks good. Does well with that hat slap test you do. But of course the felt has a slightly rougher look and feel than fur. One of my favorite hats. But wonder if over time it will show its "woolness" more and more.

      Daisy Chase thanks,I’m dying to work on some music too, a lot of the riff I play in these intros are song fragments,or parts of songs I’m working on,forming a band now, I hope to do some live remote performances by summer..if all goes well, I wish I had time alone to work on my music, that’s a dream of mine.

    • @quadrogong1111

      Daisy Chase it’s a Gibson Zappa Roxy SG, from 2013, it was a gift from my buddy Frank, who’s in that band,Tesla. he used it in some live shows before giving it to me, they’re pretty rare, only few were made ,a few unique features on it, coil splitting, phase reversal, tiny frets,that seem to work well w only lighter strings..I have a custom inlay on it, the truss rod cover, I worked with an inlay artist and made that, the original truss rod cover is black,plain., the strings on it are deader than dead,and she needs a setup badly..I’ve been neglecting her, but even so, there’s some sonic mojo going on..it has a beautiful single coil mode too, sounds like so,where between Jerry Garcia’s guitar and a strat when I hit it, almost active,very bell like,and thinner,clearer..every nuance magnified,glassy..
      I’m gonna get this guy into shape, I’m almost embarrassed that I haven’t changed the strings or set her up in so long..I’ve been so into my reverends, I’m ignoring my other guitars..Frank told me the dealer had a hard time selling it because the serial ends w 666,the guy almost sold it twice before customers noticed,and pulled out of the sale last minute. I’ll send that clip of Frank playing this INCREDIBLE solo with that guitar live

    Hey Kevin, love the videos! They are very informative for a first time buyer! I had my eye on a few hats from a company called Bailey in either a dark navy with a black band or a dark burgundy with a black band. Each hat I’m looking at is made of something called Litefelt wool and have sweat bands made of felt, not leather. Is this something that is ok or is it really a “bottom of the barrel” type quality?

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 4 lety +1

      Lite felt is good wool, it’s American made, rainproof and rollable, I don’t think it has a felt sweatband, most likely just a cloth one, I’ve never heard of a felt sweatband, maybe a felt outer band, that’s called a self band. They’re fine, and reliable, they aren’t bottom of the barrel by any means, stay away from
      “ made in China “ and you’ll be fine,

    Hi Kevin, do you have a video discussing various felt finishes.
    i'm new to the world of hats so whats the deal with hat hair length?...
    To my limited understanding whether rabbit or beaver fur felt they both can be finished with a suede like smoothness... but then there are the long haired type of finishes, I know its all subjective but generally speaking is a long haired finish considered to be more desirable in anyway? when it comes to rain and bad weather is there any performance benefit to long haired finishes vs. short suede finishes?
    It seems that there isnt a lot of long haired rabbit fur felt hats but I see plenty of of long haired beaver hats stilll being made and sold... do they even make long haired finishes out of rabbit fur felt? or is a long haired finish basically only able to be done with beaver fur felts since they have the amazing interlocking hair strands that you mentioned...
    Any help you could give answering some of the mysteries of long haired vs other felt finishes would be greatly appreciated.

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 2 lety +1

      Most long hair beaver and short hair beaver are beaver FINISHES. NOT BEAVER FELT.
      they're rabbit. It's just a machine that combs it out to a longer finish.
      It's all rabbit. Classic finish, sueded finish is slightly velvety. Velour is a thick,plush velvet finish, pelouche or silk finish is a short hair beaver finish with a silky shine,and then there's a full beaver finish which is hairy..
      But they're all finishes and the material is usually rabbit, unless they're very expensive like Borsalino who uses wild hare, and nutria..or vintage hats may be beaver..but most fancy finishes are rabbit.

    How does the metropolitan compare to the natural or the Madrid I think that is the big brim Roche’ or even the mink beaver combo that I forget the name but has a reported suede or lush feel and then of course the Akubra; seemed to cut off when you were rolling a borsalino I think. Thanks again Kevin.

    • @quadrogong1111
      @quadrogong1111  Před 4 lety +3

      The natural feels like no other hat, very light, silky soft with no stiffener at all, just pure, soft..not a snappy, firm or thick hat, it’s soft and luxurious..different, it’s got a soft flow to the brim,but it’s fantastic.
      The Madrid is the same shape but firmer,snappier,more curve to the flange,more definition to the shape,
      The metropolitan is thicker, heavier,like way thicker felt, has a slight velvety finish, not too much that it’s tacky, just soft textured but a good,firm, snappy felt. Some of the best felt Stetson has ever made in a dress hat in the last 25 years, if not, the best.

      It would depend on the color, brim size..
      i'm not that impressed by beaver felt, etc
      To me it's all about style..color, design..
      I like a classic hat in a vibrant colors, soft felt, and center crease,high-ish crown. I like the Stetson designs more, genuine Lock from England is gorgeous, but they tend to have low crowns, medium brims,soft felt.. just not my style.. But I'd love a proper Lock bowler !
