    How 'Billions' actor Asia Kate Dillon uses their platform as 1st non-binary TV star to help others
    Asia Kate Dillon is breaking barriers. As one of the stars of the hit show “Billions,” Dillon has been cast in a role that’s breaking barriers in the high-stakes Wall Street drama steeped in money, power and politics. Dillon’s character, Taylor Mason, is the first major non-binary character to hit American television.
    "I'm Asia. My pronouns are they, them and theirs," the actor told ABC News special "Nightline" correspondent Adam Rippon.
    Not only is Dillon playing the first non-binary role on television, but the 34-year-old actor shares something in common with their character. Like Taylor, Dillon identifies as non-binary and was assigned female at birth.

    I can never wrap my head around Damian's natural accent. The only major productions I've seen him in he plays American characters. Knowing he's British still doesn't help with the strange sounds coming out of his mouth.

    Taylor is such a cold blooded killer, boss of a character on that show. Really mind altering in a lot of ways but in positive ways. I mean the character was just a stone faced killer and a quick witted, principled, resourceful genius. How could it not be mind opening at the least. Great show too.

    The thing I am struggling to understand - if anyone could enlighten me - is why "gender" is important at all. To me, I have always believed the concept of gender is something we have all invented that doesn't carry any meaning. I understand feeling as if you were assigned the wrong sex and wanting to change this - a.k.a. being transexual. But as a girl, who frequently dresses or behaves in ways we would typically associate with a "boy" sometimes (i.e. mens jumpers, tracksuits etc, go skateboarding, don't really understand the appeal of many "female" conversational topics, also bisexual), or as a "girl" other times - I feel as I often don't behave in ways that are stereotypical of other females. Is there more to "non-binary" than this? As I would never have thought to label myself as anything... I have always just thought there is a huge diversity in the personalities of different men or women and in this modern day we have the privilege of behaving/dressing in whatever way makes you happy, without worrying too much about gender. And surely, pronouns should not matter if they are correct for your sex, when within gender, there is a huge spectrum of behaviour that can be associated with it?
    I hope this is not offensive as I am just trying to get a better understanding - so please correct me if I am wrong so I can learn!

      I could throw the same question back at you...why is it important that we not classify people as they are seen? This is a very recent phenomenon. For your example, there are girls/women who have displayed such traits for eons, not something new and most men couldn't care less. My own sisters are like that, and they all decided to join the military and later on one became a lawyer, the other a nurse, and one a stay at home mom. The one who is a stay at home mom taught me how to play basketball and archery. Most of my aunts are quite independent and very successful individuals in their own rights. I for one didn't think one way or the other because my aunt used to hunt or that I've never seen one of my sisters display any kind of expressive emotion(stoic to the core). None of them expressed any
      Classification , identification, replication, and documentation is the cornerstone of western scientific process and they are what made the west succeed in material terms. I posted a comment about a police description of a suspect. If in a later time we decide to change police procedures so that they are trained not to "offend" or misclassify people...could you imagine the confusion there?
      Think of AI, facial recognition, biometrics, medicine etc....How we supposed to proceed with these endeavors (as they are applied to human-machine interactions or cures in terms of medicine) which rely heavily on classification. We know for a fact that humans are a dimorphic species; scientifically, nothing (as of yet) points otherwise. There are always anomalies, mutations, spurious observations etc...but classification is critical to how we interact with our environment. Now I see some parents actually teaching their kids about this stuff...come on. Maybe if they are teenagers and are starting to etch out their identity, but pre-teens and younger that is just outright indoctrination and I'd go as far to say that is child abuse.

    Fantastic actor, fascinating character. Billions Season 1 was OK, but it really picked up when Taylor was introduced (though that wasn't the only improvement that made S2 and subsequent seasons so much stronger.) I think they deserve an Emmy... and that means we need to (finally) get around to recognizing that the categories are not sufficiently inclusive.

    Why can't we just get rid of the stereotype of what it means to be male or female? We r born either with male or female reproductiv organs, a blessing, for otherwise humanity would simply cease to exist. Any other definition we assign to either sex is not a biological issue. So how about we let both sexes express themselves as they wish instead of making up new genders? Dress as u wish, choose the occupation that fits ur talents, interest, and ability, be a stay at home dad or mom, or a career woman/man. If we simply open up the definition and expectation of what it means to be male or female, we can get rid of the whole gender confusion and statements like "I feel like the other sex" (or neither ). U r either born with a penis or a vagina, both r equally important... how u life ur life and how u look like and express yourself is then up to u:)

    • @altruisticflower9627
      @altruisticflower9627 Před 5 lety +2

      I mostly agree with you. I'm wondering about this, though: "stay at home dad or mom, or a career woman/man" - If it's just about a biological difference that doesn't apply in most aspects of life, why should separate language be used for "men" and "women"? Why not use gender-neutral language like "stay at home parent"? Some people seem to like being referred to and thought of as men or women, while others (e.g. Asia Kate Dillon) do not. Maybe both ways are fine.

    • @altruisticflower9627
      @altruisticflower9627 Před 5 lety +1

      @A M. "when you say that there's a particular way for a man or a woman to be" - Who is saying this, though? Certainly not nonbinary people just by calling ourselves nonbinary. I am a nonbinary person; I use that adjective because it is the most popular term for a cluster of experiences that seems to be something like mine. If somebody doesn't like the term "nonbinary", I ask that they think of me as *just a person*, and not push a bunch of labels and assumptions about me or my experience of my life based on their interpretation of any characteristics my body may have (or had). If somebody refuses to do that, and insists on labeling me according to their own preference, I think they're the one being regressive.

    • @altruisticflower9627
      @altruisticflower9627 Před 5 lety +1

      @A M. To whatever extent that I am freer of sex stereotyping than people in previous generations, perhaps this partially explains why constant binary labeling (male/female, man/woman, Mr./Ms., he/she, Sir/Ma'am, etc.) seems wrong to me. I want to end this labeling for myself because I feel that it invites stereotyping. But I understand that others want to retain these labels because they see something positive or informative in them. I do not seek to label these people, but only to allow them to label themselves as they see fit. Does that make sense?

    • @altruisticflower9627
      @altruisticflower9627 Před 5 lety +1

      @A M. There's still a labeling decision, and I do not consent to the labels I mentioned. I go out of my way not to label others as "binary" or "cis", and I use "nonbinary" only because it is the most popular term for people who report similar experiences. I want to be seen and referred to as a person, just a person. There has to be a way to want this and ask for this without it being construed as labeling others.

    I thought the Taylor Mason character was a v interesting and intriguing addition to the show. The emotionless and robotic demeanour fitted in well with the fundamentally impersonal amorality of the cut-throat business being portrayed. However when she took off her clothes as a prelude to a sexual encounter in ep 5 of season 3, I saw nothing but a screen validation of anorexia and as a result, I felt v bad seeing it. The actress was doing nothing different for the non binary 'cause' by stripping off except to say "hey look at me; I can show off my teets to the camera just like countless other actresses!"
    Dillon's appearance in the show proves nothing whatsoever about the status of being non binary.

      Really? That sounds like you're positing a scientific position. Help me understand your assertion.
      How do you classify people born with ambiguous and/or both genitals?
      How do you classify people born with XX chromosomes but female genitallia, or people born with XY chromosomes and male genitallia?
      This represents somewhere between 1/1500 to 1/2000 births, depending on the medical text cited. An even higher percentage (roughly 1%) are born with some sort of physical abnormality relative to normative male/female physical characteristics.
      Given that, I don't understand how one can so strongly assert that there are 2 and only 2 genders.

Why renounce the female part of yourself, Taylor? Why is it such a big deal? Stop holding us hostage with your threats of triggering and grow the eff up! You are confusing impressionable minds. Why can't you teach them to be comfortable with who they are and express themselves without any regard to how others form their own impressions? I cannot stand this type of hostility. WAKE UP!

    With all due respect, how many of you guys have heard of folk over the age of 40 describe themselves as “non binary”?!?!???
    I have always known the term “binary” to be associated with numbers/ mathematics/science.
    Long have I subscribed to the adage, “Each to their own.”.
    However, this is a confounding term when applied by confused folk this way, wanting to sound/appear different.
    Asexual... Bisexual... yah sure, but this bloody term as used here is just straight up ridiculous.

    • @Nunyabiz8787
      @Nunyabiz8787 Před 5 lety +2

      Kelly Michaels Binary when used in math and science typically refers to things in comparisons of 2s, like 2 elements, or 2 arguments, 2 values, power of 2, etc therefore gender binary refers to 2 genders, and non-binary (non gender binary or gender queer) indicates not being part of either binary.

      BeckyLee B. I respect your comment. However it still confounds me how you can decide you are neither male or female by way of gender (not sexuality). One *must* have the organs for evacuation needs, basic reproduction and/or the basic human need for pleasure. If a foetus was born without these parts (in a setting where medical assistance was not available), it would mean toxic buildup and inevitably, death. Therefore, to my reckoning, this doesn’t make sense ...again, with all due respect.
