Never before in human history have we been richer, more advanced or powerful. And yet we feel overwhelmed in the face of rapid climate change. It seems simple on the surface. Greenhouse gases trap energy from the Sun and transfer it to our atmosphere. This leads to warmer winters, harsher summers. Dry places become drier and wet places wetter. Countless ecosystems will die while the rising oceans swallow coasts and the cities we build on them.
So why don’t we just like… prevent all of that? Well, it’s complicated.

One thing that always bugs me on the climate change question is that no one ever mentions how destructive towards the environment the military is. Most notably, the US military is the largest polluter in the world, creating more waste than most developed countries combined. I also find it funny that we are always scolded for our “carbon footprint” at the individual level, which again completely turns the blame away from the real contributors of global warming. We must continue to view this situation with class analysis and an objective view on how the ruling class is the real perpetrator of this debacle.

I would never understand why aren't we doing the only thing that we actually know it's useful: massive reforestation. It's cheap, it captures CO2 but the most important thing it's that mitigate many of the climate change effects. Having extense forest where nowadays we have arid soils helps to regulate the water cycle (smaller floods, shorter drought periods), also helps to have more biodiversity and therefore protection against plagues and diseases. And for an economical point of view, for a small budget, you can create thousands of jobs on places that are being abandoned due to desertification or rural exodus.

I work in the concrete repair industry in the DC metro area and one of the things that DC has implemented is a requirement that 50% of all concrete waste from demolition is recycled. At first we thought this was going to be a huge financial impact but it turned out to be cheaper to recycle rather than send it as trash. Now we recycle more than our minimum because it’s cheaper to do so. Incentivizing really does work!
Edit: I forgot to clarify, DC subsidizes the recycling of concrete to incentivize companies to use the service more than required and is part of the reason why it ended up being cheaper.

This reminds me of a project that my school did where we must try our best to reduce our carbon footprint by changing our source of energy. For those student who legitimately were trying to get a solid solution, they were struggling to keep up with price of the energy and if we will have enough of it. I barely made the margin to reduce the carbon footprint but we have to make it a long term even since we can’t just shut down high carbon emissions without the world going bankrupt or stable…

This planet is in a constant state of change, this ball of rock we live on used to be covered head to toe in molten lava and has been dealt numerous extinction level events, yet this planet still thrives. Climates change regardless of human intervention. We will either be long dead as a species or have moved on to inhabit many worlds by the time we doom this planet. It will be quite some time before we will even have the ability to destroy this planet.

This is probably the BEST video about climate change and carbon emission, not only in the channel, but in the entire internet. I have to admit, the last time you guys talk about climate change you didin't touch the topic of the "carbon footprint TM" and I admit I was kind of pissed about. All the propaganda (because it was) about the topic in 2019-2022 focused on how the change was responsibility of the individual and honestly, I was tired of it, unable to bring myself to the idea that somehow we as individuals had that ammount of power in the matter and angry about the tale that developed countries had about the issue.
Why we, a developing country in the prime, should worry to fix a problem the great powers are telling us to do, when the enriched themselves by the same behavior they are telling us to stop? F*** Thunsberg! we are dying from starvation! we have no time for your 1st world problems!... that was my entire opinion. we never had seen an Electric vehicle in our entire lives, because nobody here has the money to buy it.
Now I see with more clarity, and this video made me realize, OK, maybe I can contribute, not because its somehow my responsibility but because I can actually do a little part, and that could be enough. Asking for better policies, and voting for better people in the country, but also buy less bottle watter, and truning of lights.
And probably, we are not doomed as species, as I used to think

So even the most common things we could do might not work.......honestly makes me feel more convinced that maybe having more transits, mainly more light rail trains are not the answer we need. SURE we do need them and less cars, but it wont be a massive fix as they one would think.
then there's the factor of people staying committed to it, just saying we need more transits and less cars are not enough, we would need to: keep them clean and accommodating for people( i barely see that at times, in fact heard a couple of months ago the light rail near settle started to have security on the trains because they found people peeing in the cart), we would need to make sure that people are safe getting on and off the transits, we would need a LOT of transits or make them supper big/long because there's a lot of people in one area at a time, and people needs to get to certain area's fast especially if the transit is making multiple stops, and at that point i feel like it be a different version of the car problem that people are trying to avoid, because there's no way anyone's actually going to agree on destroying their businesses just to make it easier to walk to certain area instead of driving.
i could continue going on about the massive obstacles, but the point is the more transit thing sounds good on paper till you realize theres a lot of stuff we would need to do, change and get rid of that's not JUST cars, but even peoples willingness and commitment to it all is a big if not bigger problem as well.

Funny is, that during the time the EU CO2 trace has not decrease! Cow farts turn into trapped carbon in grass then the cows eat the grass and fart it back out but not all grass is eated so there’s more carbon trapped then is taken out of the soil. And yet climate change isn't. The dinosaurs were around for close to two hundred million years. They were clearly fine with global mean temperatures 10°C higher than today (CO2 levels were 3-4 times higher back then). Burning ALL the fossil fuels in the ground would raise current temperatures by roughly 10°C. If the dinos can survive it, I'm confident we can too. And we have air conditioning.

yeah, if you think about it in a place like california that tried to implement regulations towards climate change and stuff like that ended up loosing population that migrated to texas, and several other states just because the cost of life was increasing a lot and taxes were very high. so you cant just "impose regulations" or "promote green energy" without fucking up the population (or at least for now).
i really want a solution for the way of "you emmit, you pay" in a global scale that increases over time and makes contaminating industries no loger profitable in all of the world.

Although "a single person's entire life can only amount to 1 second less of global industries' harm," voting and direct political activism is not the crucial alternative in my opinion, because politicians, at least in America, no longer prioritize public opinion. Most of them prioritize lobbyists and donors, so while your recycling bin may not make a big difference, the biggest difference an American can make probably IS at the personal responsibility level- what they purchase. I would argue that simply voting with your wallet, and sending your money only to ethical companies/industries is the most effective way for Americans to start changing our political will to action, and that our dollars, which make the "bad guys" powerful in the first place, make more of an impact than our votes, which we cast only a handful of times in our life, for a limited selection of nominees who are sometimes just the lesser of evils.
