David was the lead singer. Lol have you ever listened to an entire Temptations album? Let's be modest say each album is roughly 12 songs. Ruffin would sing lead on 7. Eddie on 4. Paul would get 2. And one of the songs Eddie is lead you know Ruffin probably co lead lol. He was that it factor that took them to what they are today. It's a reason why everyone loves the classic 5 line up the most.
What's interesting about the Temptations is that after Ruff was let go, Motown decided to change the vocal arrangement of the group to give all group members lead parts in all of the songs. On songs like Cloud Nine, Psychedelic Shack, I Can't Get Next to You, and Ball of Confusion, all of the Temps each have a line in the song to sing lead. I presume it was changed this way to prevent one member from monopolizing the lead vocal. Motown perhaps feared that if Dennis Edwards (Ruff's replacement) was given all of the lead vocals in their songs, they would have the same ego problems with him like they had with David.
