I can't say I'm a huge fan of the whitewash look, but I can appreciate the stark contrast it gives 😊 I love watching your work come to life, and that top is just STUNNING! You are one of my inspirations to get into woodworking; please continue to do what you do! ❤️
I agree!
I appreciate the work, but the white wash finish isn't what I would have gone with.
I like white wash... but in this case the "stark contrast" actually detracts from the 1/2 sawn -1/4 sawn effect of the top.
Again... love and appreciate the work! This is a strictly personal style opinion.
Great job, Jay! ❤️
Thank you 🙏 well, as I explained in the video there was a reason for that but I totally understand.
Me too. I think a darker colour would have made it a lot better.
👍👍👍👍
I was never a white wash fan, but have to admit I'm reformed, I love it. My dining room and lounge furniture has been white washed, with additional colours of Grey, blue and a touch of beige. It gives off a calming feel. My parents bought a desk (pine) for me when I was thirteen, I am now 60, I white washed it (that was a job and a half) it is now standing in a corner of the lounge which is used as an office, everything blends in.
I cannot tell you how happy I am that you love natural wood. This piece is astoundingly beautiful. Whitewash might have been better, but I still love the result! You seem to be getting more confident in front of the camera, your humor shines through. I giggled throughout the process. Thank you for all you do. 😊
Glad you enjoyed it 😉
This is truly stunning. Your ability to transform this poor old lady into a stunning beauty is a work of art to behold.
Thank you 🙏
The wood in that piece is crazy beautiful! Fantastic restoration!
Right? I love it
Beautiful wood! You really brought it to life! I tend to like darker stains, like a darker walnut or darker tones from that great wood on top and doors but that is just my preference. Yet I think the contrast is wonderful on this piece and you said you were keeping it...so I bet it will fit beautifully in your place having seen some of the pieces you have. Really should be a great fit! Loved the video as well!
Two hours long? I'd watch that. Looks incredible! It reminds me of the boho bedside table you carved.
I would watch it too
Thank you 🙏
Me too ☺️
Hi Jay, I believe the wood used for this desk is rosewood (my best guess, as I worked with some, donkeys years ago). The desk top for sure, and looks like the doors too, it is the groove pattern that exadurates the beautiful grain. There are couple different trees that are called rosewood because of the reddish tint, this one might be bolivian rosewood, maybe even indian cocobolo.
The rosewood is red only in the centre of the trunk, changing to brownish hues and then very blonde wood closest to the bark. Was often used for building desks, tables, even pianos cca 100 years ago.
I am no pro, so will gladly stand corrected if my guess is incorrect.
Thanks for the info 😉
re: veneer query - what a great catch. I was going to suggest some type of fruit wood (eg cherry) from the color and hardwood grain appearance. Such artisanal surface working not possible on softwood, surely? Perhaps a regional craftsman used timber available from local orchards?
I agree.
I am an old marquetrist, and the rosewood veneer sheets that I have worked with all had these exact colour shifts: pinkish, diferent shades of reddish brown and broad stripes of yellowish white. The door panels are seemingly from wood cut close to the roots, since the rosewood root veneers has occasional dark brown, almost black patterns. So yes, I agree too. It is most probably the beautiful rosewood.
I enjoy your videos, your skill and patience. May I suggest that instead of using a caustic rust remover where you have to use gloves, try Evaporust. It’s water based and reusable. Adam Savage from “Myth Busters” has a video on it that you might enjoy. He LOVES the stuff. I’ve tried it once and it worked fine.
I think the wood is beautiful but I would have preferred black instead of white. I think the black would have been a great contrast to the wood. Overall I think you did a wonderful job in restoring something that was very damaged and ready for the garbage heap. A job well done!
I agree
I agree with the use of black instead of white
Ditto.
Me too.
Love your work! I kinda agree with the other replies maybe a little warmth instead of white. But a FANTASTIC JOB!!
Hah!: massaging the veneer. Beautiful workmanship. You are the very best. I have not seen anyone else take the care you do!
Flipping Drawers is my daily moment of zen so I’d actually love a two hour video 😂🤷🏼♀️🙌🏼
lol thanks
Wow, I loved this video. From the very first video of yours, I have admired your work ethic. The attention you pay to the insides of cabinets and drawers is the best on you tube. The flipping over of stained or damaged parts is something I have never seen anyone do before. The sandblasting off the damaged finish is something I have never seen before. You sir, are the best! The piece turned out to be a stunner. Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you Anita 🙏that is very kind. I appreciate it
Simply incredible!! All your hard work shines through!! That wood is so beautiful 😍
Thank you 😊
Good so gorgeous... I loved the planning of the top. That's awesome.
Thank you ☺️ I’m glad it’s good for another few decades
This desk was lovely when you had finished the renovation. You put so much work, skill, knowledge and artistic flair into all that you do. You keep furniture out of landfill which is a good thing so well done. I am looking forward to your next creations.
Thanks Pamela ☺️
Wow. And the wood is beautiful!
Just to say, I wouldn't be opposed to a 2 hour video. Longer videos are great for when I need background noise while playing hand held video games. Plus, I find sanding soothing.
Simply Beautiful! You gave her the 'fountain of youth'.
And it felt amazing 🤩
Gorgeous, love the wood grain and the details of this piece
🥰
Beautiful and always so interesting to watch. Your patience and skill is impressive. I guess when you have the time and proper tools to devote to this kind of work it can be fun and very gratifying.
Thank you 😊 it is. I love it
I'm not a good handyman, too proud to accept failure, error or imperfection. Thank you for your clips which are so pleasant and well filmed. and thank you for your talent
You are definitely invited to the cool kid club Stunning work glad you’re keeping it👏👏👏👏✌️🥰
Lol thanks
🙄 😒 thanks we are using your desk at the cool kid club meetings✌️
Jay, you are a master of details! Fantastic job on this desk. Looks to be a mix of French Provincial and Chippendale. The varied wood grain makes this desk very eclectic, as these two styles were usually executed in dark stained solid hardwoods. I love the mix of styles on this piece, so unique! The matte finishes bring out the beautiful grain. Just lovely!
Awwww that’s so kind 🥰 thanks for the info🙏
I wish there was a “love it” button to use, not just a “like” 😍
On a separate note - where do you normally sell your restorations? I realise that this one is not for sale, but others? Thanks
Thank you ❤️ it’s usually Facebook but will probably start selling in Etsy
@@Flippingdrawers oh, I strongly suggest you don’t. 😂I had one a couple of years back, sold some things and never got money from Etsy 😂😂😂
@@Flippingdrawers it's a pity because I am not on FB. But eBay yes. How much for example would you expect to get for this piece? This is exactly the piece I would go for.
@@lextrombaso
I can't believe that's thr same desk. I've watched you long enough to know the amazing miracles you perform, but I'm astonished every time. ❤❤
Wow, thank you!
Your workmanship is unbelievable. Removing the top with your plainer was genius. The result is gorgeous. Love it.
Thanks ☺️ glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful!!! So much patience for this piece. The top is absolutely gorgeous 👍😎🐕🦺
The wood on top, drawers and also doors is so stunning! Love this desk! If it’s for sale and if I have money, I would buy it for sure! Love this beautiful wood! Glad you rescue this treasure desk!
Excellent. Thank you for sharing too.
gorgeous! You are wonderful at what you do!
Thank you 🙏
I saw the beautiful potential in this desk too. You’re attention to detail is impressive.
I’m not crazy about the white, either, but the transformation is still stunning! That desk top, wow. And your repairs were so thoughtful and well done. I’m really impressed. Great job! Thanks for sharing!
What would you have done?
@@Flippingdrawers I’m not sure. You mentioned that there were some inconsistencies in the color of the wood, so that’s why you stained it. I think maybe I might have gone for painting or dark staining it black instead, so the beautiful top and drawers were still highlighted. But I don’t know, maybe that wouldn’t have looked as unique as your result does. The truth is I’m still pretty new to this and I’m learning so much from watching you, and AT Restorations, and Transcend Furniture and Mad City Modern. Each of you has a unique approach to refinishing and it’s such a great education. I’m very grateful for those folks like yourself who take the time to share their knowledge.
Hi. I believe it is White Stinkwood ball and claw desk with linenfold drawers and doors.
This style was very fashionable in most South African homes in the mid 1900's and I have inherited a whole bedroom set from my grandmother.
Thank you ☺️ that’s very interesting. Will have a search.
Hi. It's definitely white stinkwood. I have a writing bureau in the same wood
Beautiful
Oh my goodness! That wood grain! Absolutely beautiful. I love the contrast between the natural wood and the white. Great makeover.
Thank you ☺️
That restoration turned out beautifully!!! Although a lot of work went into glueing and sanding, it was worth the labor!! What a beautiful job!
Thank you ☺️
Nice job man!
This is gorgeous! I so appreciate all your hard work on this desk. Who would have thought that it could be redone given the original condition. And I like the whitewash. I like the contrast. Thanks for your videos!
You did a outstanding job…What a beautiful piece of furniture!!!❤️❤️❤️
Absolutely beautiful work. It turned our so pretty!
Much appreciated
I love the hardware, it’s so elegant. And the top is absolutely gorgeous wood. Who knew it was hiding under there?
It was an honour to watch a true craftsman at work,I can’t believe I’m laying in bed watching this video at 5.30 am. Thank you for sharing your work with us.stay safe from Scotland ❤
I’m in bed reading this comment at 06:50 am 😂 thank you for watching 💛 glad you enjoyed
Wow, what an amazing difference. And such a unique piece. Well done.
🥰
Stunning! What vision you have, to see the beauty hiding there. Thank you.
Thank you for watching 😉
Another beautiful job well done it looks beautiful🤗🤗🤗 thank you for sharing🤗🤗🤗
My pleasure 😉
Beautiful wood hidden under all those scars, tears and muck. She's gone from 95 to 17 after a few day's work. And your infills were masterful!
Thank you Jay🥰
Your attention to detail is next level! Well done!! You're super lucky to have ALL the gadgets 😉
Thank you ☺️ I’ve worked hard to buy them 😉
@@Flippingdrawers we see how flipping hard you work for what you've got! Well done!
@@robynduplooy3039 thank you 🙏
Absolutely stunning, I love watching you work
Absolutely gorgeous.
So beautiful!
Wow! What a beautiful piece. Great work 👏
Loved watching this! This is my favorite kind of content. Great job fixing all the problems! You're a real artist.
Awesome 🤩 thank you
Another beautiful old girl given a new life 😊the top is stunning! ❤
YAY! I'm first for once to see your magic.
Thank you Carmen 🥰
I’m not a fan of the whitewash, but overall the wood looks amazing! I wish I could envision the ultimate results like you see them, but I can’t seem to apply that ability to woodworking like I can with my sewing and crocheting projects. I Love your attention to all the little details and totally understand why you want this beauty for yourself😊
So beautiful, love watching your videos and seeing the beauty of the piece come to life🥰
What a difference! You have a gorgeous desk now!
Yes I do 🥰
Wow! I cant believe that amazing grain pattern was just hidden underneath the stain! I love that you removed the stain so you could enjoy the beauty of that wood. Looks amazing!
Thank you ☺️
The grain on this piece is stunning and you did an amazing job restoring it 😍
Again a wonderful piece lovingly redone, the way you take a small piece of wood to fit a broken piece you never see the patch done, amazing, my only worry is the thin wood shelfs and inside of drawer, they look like the might just break if anything heavy on them, but since you are keeping it then you will know what to put in so as not to break. The finish is stunning the sand blasting was a great idea. Well done as always hugs Dede xxx
Thank you. Don’t worry, they won’t break. Lasted many decades 😉
Oh, that's such a lovely transformation Jay.
It turned out absolutely beautiful. I am working on a tabletop myself right now, slow at it. The difference between you and me is your an artist and I’m just an 80 year old women trying to make things look better. Thank you for all your hints.
Awesome. Thanks for watching
It looks astonishing!!! Is it cedar wood? Kind of reminds me of my cedar chest.
Sounds right but I’m not 100% sure.
I have to say that everything came out nice except the whitewash. Other than that it's a beautiful project. JMO
Thank you. I hope my reasoning for it made sense though
Wow! Such beautiful wood. You did an amazing job bringing it back to life. Your attention to detail in fixing all the problems will keep the ‘old lady’ going for many years to come. 👏👍
Thank you ☺️ have a lovely day
Wood you saved is gorgeous 💯
It’s like watching a surgeon doing an operation but on wood work. Awesome 😎 job. I so love your work ethic.💜👍🏾🇳🇿
🤗
Absolutely beautuful!
Beautiful transformation!
Stunner , I love it
Holy cannoli!! That wood grain POPS!!! The contrast is great. At first I thought it would look washed out, then you started applying the oil! Wonderful!!!! Great restore! Take care!
Thanks 👍
Such a pleasure to see this lovely old piece given such a vibrant new life.
Absolutely gorgeous and I would have watched a 2-hour video
I love the wood grain on the top, so glad you left it natural.
I can see the desk smiling it is so happy!
Hi, its very enjoyable seeing the joy you get from repairing and restoring ugly ducklings into beautiful swans. I agree that perhaps a thinned out white wash instead of the white paint. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Thank you for sharing your process with this stunning desk.
I've never heard of the water & iron thing, thanks so much! it's perfect timing, I'm gonna use it in my current project 😄
😎 glad it was helpful
Can only imagine the feeling you got after the last finishing touch was applied...not many can appreciate the original craftsmanship, but your attention to detail is absolute compassion for the trade! If possible, could you please share the species of wood...thanks for sharing!
Thanks Mark. I’m not an expert but I believe it’s a mix of walnut (on the top) and perhaps walnut burl?
Fantastic!!
Wow, you took something that looked like it was ready to be chopped up for firewood and made a beautiful desk out of it again.👍🏼
Thank you!
It has so much character and you highlighted each unique part. The top is my favorite.
Oh my that was alot of work, but the result is beautiful! Love the woodgrain on the top. 💕
Thanks ☺️
The desktop is STRIKING! I love the contrast. Excellent job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Sooo much work... But I`m so happy that you saved this beauty.
People like you keep history alive.
This desk is a gem. Thank you for sharing :)
You're very welcome!
I am a poor amateur with no appropriate tools, but I did my therapy room with furniture I got for 10 quid at the dump… eaten with woodworms and I did them all up myself. There is a great satisfaction in rescuing old pieces of furniture, it is like travelling through times and history. I am a great admirer of your work.
I love watching you work, I watch tons of people who do furniture repair and refinishing, unfortunately too many of them use tools and techniques that the average person can't afford.
You on the other hand do things that almost anyone can do.
I refinish furniture, so I watch CZcams to learn methods that translate to what I can afford and what I myself can accomplish.
Thanks for your videos and giving me many ideas on how I can use them on things I refinish
Awesome 🤩 thank you
What intricate work you do. You blended in pieces of wood and could not detect where they started and ended. It was so much fun to watch.
Thank you ;-)
The piece with the beautiful wood came out perfect. Great job
That would look perfect in a little beachside cottage!
Beautiful results...wood is stunning!
Wow, I'm so impressed! I love how the different wood grain colors in the top of the dresser match the 2 tone style of the rest of it. Beautiful!
Thank you 😊
That was definitely worth saving it looks stunning
Thanks Bradley🙏
Yowser that’s a beautie. That wood is unbelievable!
The rust remover worked good! So many repairs. Amazing Job Jay!!!
Thanks Dean take care mate 👍
Make a 2 - or 3-part video way you could include every aspect of the restoration. Personally, I'd VERY happy for you to do so, and I'd be very happy to watch them.
Truly a labor of love, but what a beautiful result ! If wood could talk, that desk would say Thank You.
❤️
I absolutely love the natural grain, it’s kinda mismatched but that doesn’t bother me, love it!❤
amazing transformation! ❤️
Wow - you saw the potential and breathed new life into this gorgeous piece!
Thank you 🤗
Loved the humor and talking to us from outside the desk. 😃
Thank you 😊
I love that you kept original hardware & feet!! Just Love that wood grain!!!❤️✨❤️
Thank you 🙏
I respect and admire how well you take care of your tools.
I appreciate that😉
