Always bring little gifts for the kiddos, something packable and doesn’t take much space, like small viles of bubbles, coloring pencils or crayons, pens. I find these at the night market, or the ‘tap hoa’ stores in Hanoi b4 I set out on my trips to Ha Giang. Sapa is next on my list.

I've been in the Sapa area for nine years and find that the best approach to trekking and staying in the area is to never book ahead at a hotel or agency in Hanoi, where they will charge three or four times the real cost and where they will pay close to nothing to the ethnic minirities who do the work. Come on a bus to Sapa and you will be greeted by Hmong women who will immediately take you on a trek to their village while their husbands will bring any luggage you don't want to carry to their home by motorbike. Lately several Hmong have gotten online, so you can actually book a stay this way, but make sure it is a real Hmong and not some Hanoian faking it.

Thanks for the tips, Paul. I'm planning a trip there early 2024. This is very helpful! How long do you suggest someone go there for?

Hi Paul. Great to hear your comment. You are right, everybody can book a tour or homestay before coming but make sure they are the local people in Sapa. Not in Hanoi (Vietnamese) - At Trekking Tour Sapa we are 100% local living in Sapa (Not like some Vietnamese company-own said they are Hmong but that's not true).

@@BluffyMoo. As Sapa has many great places to visit, I recommend hiking about 2 - 3 days, which is enough time to explore Sapa's beautiful scenery.

Yes, of course. This is video I made. Come from June - July if you want to see the green rice fields. However, if you want to see the golden rice fields, you should arrive between August and September.

The end of November is also the ideal time to go trekking in Sapa. But please check the weather forecast in Sapa 3 days before your arrival.

#one more: don't give money to the kids in SAPA. It's a scam, their parents are right there forcing them to walk barefoot with a baby on their back. It's shameful, do not entertain them.

Foreigners must have a Vietnamese drivers license to drive a moto, and also have insurance for the moto, if not you will be liable for any accidents -your fault or not. Also, Vietnam is an extremely dangerous country to travel in and you should have your own insurance that pays IMMEDIATELY or immediate access to $5,000. You will only be received by a hospital, but no live saving care given if they do not have payment or down-payment first. Also need vaccinations for typhoid, hepatitis etc here.
