- The late, great SONNY STITT ( 1924-1982 ) played gigs in Chicago with regularity over the decades, often paired with fellow saxophonist GENE AMMONS. This 1951 wire recording in the ballroom of the Pershing Hotel actually had Ammons in the front line but only Stitt was recorded by the archivist who captured this exciting set ( a saxophonist himself and obviously a Sonny Stitt aficionado ). No information is available regarding the exact date or the other musicians in the ensemble.
The songs played in this video are :
title ? ( a shuffle blues )
Sweet and Lovely
I Cover the Waterfront
After You’ve Gone
I’m Confessin’ That I Love You
Body and Soul
Speaking of Sonny Stitt, here’s an interesting article about Chicago saxophonist Diane “Lil Sax” Ellis and the night he invited her to sit-in at the Apartment Lounge.

Stunning!!! This is a hell of a discovery, and thank you so much for sharing this. Sonny was one of the few who mastered the saxophones to the extent that he did. Sonny Stitt was especially gifted and this is some of the best playing I've ever heard.
🥰🥰🥰
Fantastic performance ...
The awesome Mr Stitt.
Do you have the full performance?
Thank you so much! Any idea if Stitt is playing alto or tenor on this?
All the tunes on this 1951 Pershing gig were on TENOR.
THANKS for listening and any sharing with kindred spirits !
@@TheMotiondevotion thank you! Any more stitt recordings would be amazing also. Thanks again for uploading this
