  • We often hear from Muslims that our ummah suffers from disunity on a local, national and international level. Slight differences of opinion can cause major divisions. Our countries remain deeply divided between themselves and there is an impression that has consolidated that we will not be able to recover our position. This situation has led to despondency. Helplessness and in the extreme, an acceptance of the status quo. But is this written? Is there anything we can do about this parlous situation? Have we come to the end of Muslim civilisation, and are we now merely managing decline? Are we waiting for the Mahdi, a leader who will change our situation? Or is there anything we can do about our predicament? To help us understand the issues of unity and division from an Islamic perspective we have invited Shaykh Dr. Shuayb Wani.
Dr. Shuayb Wani is the Director and Co-Founder of the Dār Al ‘Ilm Institute daralilm.org - He grew up in Indian-occupied Kashmir and started his quest to learn Islamic ‘Ulūm during his schooling years. He completed his foundational Islāmic Studies in India, and at Al-Azhar University, Egypt. He devoted 10 years to studying advanced Islāmic Studies specializing in Usūl al-Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) at the International Islamic University, Malaysia. He holds a PhD in : “The Legal Thought of Imam al-Shafi‘i” published in 2021. He has 20 years experience of teaching Islamic ulum. He lives in Istanbul with his family.

A very profound and nuanced discussion. We might disagree all we want with some or a lot of what he says but we have to understand he is speaking from a nuanced epistemological plane which is lost on so many of us. Reactionary and reactive attitudes will always be counterproductive.

This is an eye opener The main thing which this ummah is not focusing on is the mission of Messengers and Prophets from Adam A.S. to our Messenger Muhammad Peace and blessings on him. They fought against the human greed which leads to corruption in society. We are living in the time of unprecedented human greed this ummah needs to stand up against it we can see non Muslims specially Christians have started raising voice against it.

In Sha Allah, we shall rise again, we just need to fix ourselves towards the obedience of Allah SWT! The victory belongs to the believers as Allah has promised in the Qur'an. We just need to become the worthy believers! With all respect, some of the things which i just couldn't grasp in this podcast are:
1.) How does a division of the Ummah directly translate to it being worst and against the Qur'an?
2.) Yes, there are western ideas being pushed onto the Muslims, how does that make the west as the reality?
3.) How is yearning for certainty against the Islamic view of life when it is the most certain view that exists. Allah revealed the texts so that people ponder over it and get close to Allah , obedience and Deen, so it is certainly the most certain.
4.) What is the benefit of Ilm-al-kalam? Imam al-Shaafa’i said: The people did not become ignorant and begin to differ until they abandoned Arabic terminology and adopted the terminology of Aristotle. Ilm-al-kalaam opens the doors of deviance in the Ummah, its a dangerous territory! Islam is based on certain knowledge and not individual interpretations using logic
    - Mu'tazilah had some serious deviance in their fundamental belief system- eg. they believe that there is a third type apart from believers and disbelievers which is against the Qur'an
    - People value culture over Islam which has created a lot of problems. Look at the damage the culture has caused in the sub-continent
    - About the engagement, there are some diverse opinions which are based on authentic sources and those should not be fought over; however, there are matters where there is no space of diverse opinions, primarily the Aqeedah of a person, the Prophet Sallalu Alaihi wasallam didn't have multiple Aqeedah, we cannot unite with kufr in the name of one Ummah
    - Diversity, as long as backed by authentic sources, should be appreciated, anything beyond that has to be rejected, so diversity cannot be a glorification in an absolute sense. We have to be careful when we go in that lane of diversity and disagreements.
    - Nationalism has divided this Ummah massively
I dont know if there is way to get these doubts clarified, i am genuinely confused about some of the points.
The most beautiful part of the podcast was the hopeful ending, may Allah guide us all.

About 50 years ago when I was a kid and in Africa, I remember occasionally people began and ended Ramadan on different days. It never bothered me, and I don't remember anyone else being bothered. We actually felt somewhat good if some families are still fasting while we have eid. Since many people cried when Ramadan ended, the fact that someone was still fasting gave us the hope that Ramadan is still arround. That's how my brain processed it. I understand why in modern society we want standardization. But Ramadan isn't about modernity, so I'm okay with or without standardization.

What is also missing in the discussion of taqlid is how the Muslim must acquire mandatory knowledge and thinking abilities which function as personal ijtihad. Imam al Shafii (rh) articulated this in his explanation of knowledge and 7Ijtihad in his Ar Risala. He articulated that Muslims must acquire a body of knowledge. He must also be able to practice ijithad. Eg. If the time for prayer arrives and the Muslim does not have a masjid in which to pray nor knows the direction for prayer,he must strive with sincerity, reasoning, to know the reality, ie. Know landmarks, or astronomical allignment, to determine the best of his ability the direction for prayer. So the sane, conscious, mature Muslim must acquire mandatory knowledge and he must acquire the attributes of a mujtahid. Whst is considered as taqlid today would be considered as mandatory knowledge of the Muslim by the Imam.
Muslims became deficient in knowledge, and some ulama used tge people's dependency for knowledge which they should know but instead relied on ulama, to then manipulate & exploit them.
The universal desemination of mandatory knowledge should be a major objective towards reviving Islamic culture abd civilization.

One of the best discussions i have listened to besides the lectures by other scholars. This is exactly the problems, we as ordinary beings go about our life trying hard to survive in a fiscal sense and the sametime trying to grapple with the many rules and trying our very best to measure but fail frequently in many respects....end of the day we have to make numerous decisions everyday and try hard for it to be Islamically aware and aligned. Besides the rules, its our own enlightenment path that we try to digest and fornukate from various aspects, tgis disxussions helps to be open to disxuss amd learn to align- and mot create new paths, but maybe different from overly restrictive thought schools by being engaged

Finally nice to see Muslims who think for themselves and not simply regurgitate.
Knowledge is constant. It never stops. There is new knowledge for every age. Knowledge did not cease at the time of the Prophet’s (pbuh) death.
Allah tells us to be rational and reason. Think with the brain He gave you. Don’t be mindless sheep following what your forefathers gave you and taking their word for it. 1400+ years have passed since the death of our beloved. True knowledge has been hidden and skewed from its right place through deception and control. May Allah let everyone who reads this comment see His light manifest in their lives. Because once you see it, you realize reality for what it is.

Divisions among Muslims are real and there are many types, some are fine but others are not, but divisin is an outcome of immaturity and weakness of the Ummah and not the cause of it. Yes, we may discuss divisions directly but the real task to to tackle the causes and reasons. To deal with causes, a long strategic plan is badly needed!

Aren't we over 1bn people scattered on Earth? How can we unite, it's impossible and there's good in it. It shows that our religion is alive and keeps improving the way we understand it. We should be proud of that. At the same time, I do dream of a world where muslims speak with one voice against evil and praise good, that would be so powerful....and I believe, honestly, that with the globalisation, the internet, social media, we'ere getting there. Islam and muslims have an impact on people and life in general. Let's love our religion, believe in its perfection and love our brothers in sisters and brothers in Islam and hold a more positive and optimistic speech about our ummah.

It does not seem very possible to be an integrated Ummah under the current conditions. Different nations have different socio-cultures, believing in the same religion is not enough to bring them closer. Also, no state or nation wants to give up their independence. In this case, there can only be a global institutional representation of the caliphate, such as the Vatican structuring of the Catholic Church.

Jazakullah khayr. The limitations to his expressed views due to his limited explanations of the particular realities. One limitation is the perception we can build, or rebuild civilization in our present reality. The "a'7immah mudaalleen" violently and ruthlessly inhibit Islamic civilization. They impose materialism, from which reductionism is normalized. For example, Kashmir. We are not free to rebuild Islamic civilization in Kashmir.
One matter which is not touched upon but is a major cause of division, is that many Muslim leaders: ulama, rulers, shuyukh, accept national regimes as legitimately within Shariah. Thus, they cooperate, comply, advocate for the acceptance of existing regimes. This despite applying kufr legal systems and upholding batil treaties & agreements. Essentially, these Muslim leaders present as if Shariah accepts Israel's authority and sovereignty over masjidul Aqsa, for example!!!

You do not wait for no one , be the one you are waiting for . Start with UNITING THE FAMILY , with kindness and constant kindness and caring , living a life of honesty hard work and a just life . Extend to the community . Stop listening to differences of religions methodology .
We only have ONe GOD , one book of God , One guide sent by God .
Erase the stupid partitioning shia, sunni, sufi etc etc . And even not only join these divisions also join with the right minded Jews and Christians . And then see how strong we get .
The world is united against us and we are divided within us , and wish Salahuddin must come or Mehdi must come .
It is because of this differences and divisions we create we have become so weak , that no one wants to respect us and every one wants to Genocide us . Israel , Kashmir , India , uighurs in China , Rohinga in Burma and in Yougaslavia . List goes on .
Can you imagine : human beings in millions there water supply food supply taps are turned off and 22 spineless brainless leaders cannot turn oil taps off to not to give oil to do carpet bombing of the hungry homeless innocent defenseless civilians Men, Women , Children , Doctors , Nurses, patients , houses and hospitals .
Why are we so divided ? And so weak why ?
It is our Unity , that our enemies are scared to death. So they buy out or beat down a few among us . We have to know this wisdom and work hard to gain high positions or friends to people in high office , and help improve humanity .
Simple steps we can take is to have every Masjid a soup kitchen to feed the hungry . This way on friday evening our own youth instead of running to the malls they run to the Masjid to help with food preparation and serving . Islam gets preached in Masjids and it gets practised in the Sardar ji’s Gurduwara . They have food served every sunday . There youth seen serving food . I am not joking it is a fact . And see the governor of Louisiana is the son of Sardar je. ( Sikh) .
Nicki Haley the past gov. Of south Carolina , UN REP OF US , now running for President now .
Why our youth cannot become governors etc . ?
They will if we make our worship to God , human service center , instead of lip service to God .
We do need to do lip service of x 5 times per day .Be charitable 2.5 % of the annual savings for the poor and needy and all that 8 category of people . Fast and if affordable go for Hajj .
Those rituals are mostly done ritualistically and the spirit of being a servant to God , by serving the people is ignored . And the result is the cry of a million/s of human being is ignore , we are watching with pain and unable stop .
I love the way the guest is explaining the need for unity and how to do it .

    O Muslim
    Uphold your responsibility
    For Humanity
    With sincere Empathy
    And stay within the community
    Of religious, practicing believers
    Protect and make the Masaajid
More than a place of worship
    As it used to be
    A sanctuary, a social service
    And a place of council
    Make the Maktabs a means
Of connecting the young to Allah
And the Sunnah of Rasoollullah ﷺ
Make educating your daughters in Deen
    A priority
Educate and support the vulnerable Youth
And create a loving and listening atmosphere
    In your homes
As the stench of Atheism and immorality
    Is reeking everywhere
Through the Media and Secular Education
    Perfume your homes constantly
    With Dua, taleem and A'maal
    So that the powerful essence
Of the fragrance of your Imaan
    Overpowers the pollution
    Being spread around the World
    To destabilize the family unit
    And destroy the Human spirituality
    O Muslim
    Be the saviour and hero
That you were supposed to be
    Stand in the night prayers
    Of Tahajud salaah
    And supplicate in prostration
For the entire mankind and the Jinn

    Bismillah
    O Muslims
    We have been warned
By our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
    Of the 'avalanche' of 'fitan'
    Trials and tribulations to come
Some that we are already seeing
And furthermore we may yet witness
    But do not fear
As Islam does not promote fearmongering
And we have been given practical advice
By the benevolence of Almighty Allah
    Always begin with Bismillah
Enjoin the good and prevent from evil
    Aquire the knowledge of Deen
    Be vigilant, strong, and brave
    Investigate news
    Keep good company
    Avoid bad company
    Protect the gaze
Avoid anything that may lead to sin
Read surah Kahf at least every Friday
Read Ayatulkursi and 3 kuls daily
    Practice Masnoon duas
Hold fast to salaah, quran and zikr
    Uphold and strengthen family ties
Remain within the security of our homes
And not to wander about unnecessarily
Pray Tahajuud salaah, and keep on making duas
For the guidance and safety of the Ummah
Give charity abundantly and feed the people
    Greet everyone with salaam
    And always remember
There is no might or power greater than Allah
Allah is closer to you than your jugular vein
And Allah loves you very much
    And when you have Allah
    You have nothing to fear
    Be patient and grateful
    And keep smiling profusely
    Insha-Allah

Ya ayohalazina aammanoo alaikum anfusakum laa yazurukumanzallah iza dahdaitum. Let strive to have success in ibtillah for reward ie, qadamtu lihayati, real life not the present life which is full of short intermittant pleasure and sorrow. Let preachers stope nastology, let them be in present time and space . Train masses for the current senario in which we are . Internit is a blessing that messages reach to every home , nature is working as per sunnatillah, beleivers fail, others fill in the void, where believers shirk to tread the path others are utilized to smothen it. Deen will proceed ahead wthout us, it is our necessity to admit ourselves in Deen because it feeds, adorns, we get courtsies, titles of shiekh, barkathum Alia, Mutazilhul Alieha, damad barkathum, place in safa oola of prayer places and respects as mowlans even if he is a primary school dropout or a failure of a secondary school but for his steriotype percieved as deendaar.

As a Muslim I’m not waiting a mahdi or Khalifah or a savior, even prophet Mohammed never called Mohammed ibn Abdullah as “mahdi” this comes from the shiaa belief, a Muslim savior is Allah only
“Everyone shall taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception (a deceiving thing)”

Besides "a7'immah mudaalleen" & lack of acquisition of mandatory knowledge, is the widespread syncretization of NeoPlatonism into Islamic Thought. Hellenism became syncretized into Islamic culture as it did tye cultures of Ahlil Kitab, rsulting in our decline and eventual turning away from the Sunnah and preferring Western kufr materialist Thought
